Geography Files & Social Service Locations Data for Hamilton
For my project I would like to correlate low-income individuals/families with social service locations (e.g. location of homeless shelters) to determine whether there are enough services in poor areas of Hamilton.
- An ArcGIS compatible shapefile that has census tract divisions (would be ideal)
- Shapefiles of (some or all):
- Location of homeless shelters
- Location of food banks
- Community housing
- Employment centres/job banks "
Answer
To start, homeless shelter data can be acquired from the City of Hamilton, the Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton and HRSDC. The database of homeless shelter & demographics is called HIFIS and it is managed by the HRSDC Homelessness Secretariat. An individual at SPRCH may also be able to connect you with the homelessness coordinator in Hamilton. The contact at the City, who is a member of the Community Data Consortium, has also been included.
There are no geographic files for shelters, although the Social Planning Council may have done their own geocoding as may have the city. They may not have geocoded women's shelters and family shelters as these are kept as hidden as possible in order to protect the women and children in those shelters.

You can also download from Revenue Canada a list of Charity organizations by province which you could also map. More specifically, you can ask Revenue Canada for the list of charity organisations from Form T3010, this will provide you all you are looking for except shapefiles. You can ask them for Hamilton only or all of Ontario or all of Canada. It comes as an access database.

Sources of gender-desegregated data
This is something I have not been previously asked about and now I have agreed to speak to a class about gender-desgregated data sources. There are some good web pages at Health Canada and DSP and a few others but I am wondering if I am overlooking something in DLI? Any suggestions about sources of gender-desgregated data would be greatly appreciately.
Answer
Most of the data in the DLI collection can be disaggregated by sex. Even the household level surveys have some capacity for this. However, the GSS (General Social Survey) series did come to mind, as it covers a wide range of topics for which gender-based analysis might be appropriate (i.e. victimization and social networks).

MARC records for DLI products
Where can I get MARC records for all the DLI products? From this message on the STC website, I’m guessing they exist: “If you are a member of the Depository Services Program (DSP) or the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) you can download the MARC record(s) for this Statistics Canada product directly into your cataloguing database.”
Answer
On the search page for the Statistics Canada library catalogue, the right hand side bar has information on downloading Marc records in the Z39.50 format.
Z39.50 protocol enables you to search and retrieve MARC records from the Statistics Canada Library database using software connected to the Internet. This service does not require registration, simply configure your ILS Z39.50 server with the following parameters:
Database: Unicorn
IP address: 142.206.64.146
Port number: 2200Once you have configured your ILS Z39.50 server, consult your ILS documentation for how to proceed with downloading library catalogue MARC records.

Quebec Universities' Financial Information
I have a student who is looking for statistical information about equipment purchases made by Quebec universities for the following years: 1980, 1982, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2005 et 2007.
Answer:
The best place to look would be the Financial Information of Universities and Colleges Survey (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=3121&lang=fr&db=imdb&adm=8&dis=2). The Financial Information of Universities and Colleges Survey was developed to provide financial information (income and expenditures) on all universities and degree-granting colleges in Canada. Clicking on 'other reference periods' (located in the left-side menu bar), will allow you to explore other time periods.

Muslim Immigrants & Country of Origin
Although religion wasn’t asked in the 2006 Census, is there a way to obtain counts for the number of Muslim immigrants at the National level x country of origin?
Answer
There are a few possible sources in locating the answer to this question. You could first consult a report issues by Environics Research Group (http://www.environicsinstitute.org/PDF-MuslimsandMulticulturalisminCanada-LiftingtheVeil.pdf). Alternatively, you could do a xtab of coutry of origin and religion in the 2001 Census PUMF, or the version in the RDC, which should have more detailed country of origin values coded. The most detailed country of origin data come from Citizenship and Immigration, but they don't ask religion.
Egg Prices
I am interested in locating egg prices going back only 5-10 years. I'm also looking for the price of Omega3 eggs and any other types available. Any suggestions as to where I can locate this informtion?
Answer
The CANSIM table 326-0012 “average retail prices for food and other selected items monthly (dollars)” is the only table produced that contains egg prices. We do not, however, have any other information available for egg prices divided by sub-categories.

Small & Medium Manufacturing Businesses
Hello,
A student is looking for the number of small and medium manufacturing businesses in the Chaudière-Appalaches region in Québec for the past 3 years. Does anyone have any suggestions of where this information can be located?
Answer
The information you seek can be found on the Institut de la statistique du Québec's website. It has manufacturing data by region from 2004: http://www.stat.gouv.qc.ca/donstat/econm_finnc/sectr_manfc/profil_secteur/index.htm
Update: Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics 2009
The Public Use Microdata File (PUMF) for the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) 2009 is now available on the DLI FTP and website.
"The cross-sectional public-use microdata file for the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) is a collection of income, labour and family variables on persons in Canada and their families. This file includes many safeguards to prevent the identification of any one person.
Although often referred to as a single file, the SLID public-use microdata file is actually four separate files: key, person, economic family and census family.
The person file contains identifier data, which allows a researcher to group persons into households, economic families and census families, as well as link each of these files together."

Alcohol consumption, 1940 - 2005
I'm looking for stats related to alcohol consumption per capital (in litres of alcohol) in Canada between 1940 and 2005 (I'm not looking for the different types of drinks). If possible, I'm also looking for stats regarding higher quantities of alcohol consumption (5 glasses or more at least once a month for the last 12 months) between 1940 and 2005). Does this information exist?
Answer
The best source found was "Canada Food Stats" (catalogue number 23F0001XBB): http://www.statcan.gc.ca/bsolc/olc-cel/olc-cel?catno=23F0001XBB&lang=eng. This product provides access to a broad spectrum of food statistics and indicators. It contains information on per capita food availability for consumption and food prices, nutrition, supply and demand, as well as data on the food industry, processing, employment, productivity, trade and much more. The product provides users with easy access to large volumes of data, access to pre-defined tables or the ability to query the database and create unique tabulations.
Specific to your question, it contains data on alcohol consumption in litres per person since 1960. Unfortunately, there was no retrievable information regarding your query regarding high quantities of alcohol consumption.

Census Data on Activity Limitation
Regarding activity limitation data in the Census, Question 8 refers to mental or physical health problems which reduce the type of activity that a person is able to do. I have started a search for the tables that include the data from this question and so far I have not been able to find it. Any clues?
Answer
The 2006 Census questions 7 and 8 are filter questions used to create the survey frame for the post-censal Participation and Activity Limitation Survey. Here is a quote from the PALS 2006 PUMF User Guide (cat. no. 12M0021G):
“The PALS adult survey population consisted of all persons 15 years of age or older living in households who reported at least one limitation to the Census questions on activity limitations and who were living in Canada at the time of the Census.”
Page 13 of the 2006 Census Dictionary will provide you with more detail on those filter questions: http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/ref/dict/pdf/92-566-eng.pdf
The Census Dictionary also advises users to look to PALS for disability data: “The PALS will be the primary source for disability data in 2006, since it provides a better identification of the population and more detailed information on its characteristics. Disability data from the 2006 Census will be available upon special request only. The 2006 Census disability data have minimum edits and should be used with caution” (p.14).

Home births in Canada
The Cansim Table 102-4516 provides data on “Live births and fetal deaths (stillbirths), by place of birth (hospital and non-hospital), Canada, provinces and territories, annual”. The term “non-hospital” is defined in the footnotes for the table: the category "Place of birth , non-hospital" includes births in private homes, in health care institutions such as nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, nursing stations and other short-term care facilities and other health care facilities not licensed to operate as hospitals by provincial, territorial or federal governments, such as free-standing birthing centres and at other specified sites.
There is also data on non-hospital births in the Canadian Maternity Experiences Survey (data tables are available on the Public Health Agency of Canada website): http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/rhs-ssg/pdf/tab-eng.pdf
Here is the Daily release for that survey: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/071127/dq071127d-eng.htm
Canadian sexual assaults reported to police
Does Stats Can have the percentage of overall Canadian sexual assaults that are reported to police from 1999 - 2009? For example, 36% of sexual assaults are reported to police, and 64% of them are not reported? I can only find stats on spousal sexual assaults in the GSS victimization surveys.
Answer
You will be able to get data on sexual assaults from the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey (UCR) -- in Summary Statistics on the Stats Can site, in CANSIM, and through the DLI. But those will not include non-reported data because how would you know what is not reported if it is not reported? I think your only approach could be to use surveys like the GSS that include variables on sexual assault and whether or not the crime was reported. For instance, the PUMF for GSS, Cycle 23 has the variable cir_d010 for "type of incident" (which includes "sexual assault") and another variable pfo_q100 for "Police find out about incident." There is also another variable pfo_q105 (How police learned about incident).
Furthermore, the following links may help you get an idea of how much is reported and what is not reported:

Standardize & Normalize Health Data
Could you please send me the formula that Statistics Canada uses to standardize and normalize its heart attack or diabetes rates per 100,000?
Answer
The Health Statistics Division provided the following response and attachments:
Age Standardized Rates (taken from Vital Stats methodology section) Mortality rates, with the exception of crude rates, potential years of life lost (PYLL) and infant and perinatal mortality, as well as cancer incidence and certain CIHI-based data, are age-standardized using the direct method, and the 1991 Canadian Census population structure. The use of a standard population results in more meaningful rate comparisons, as it adjusts for variations in population age distributions over time and across different geographic areas.
Table 5 - Age standardized rates
Age (in years) Standard population
Less than 1 403,061
1 to 4 1,550,285

Source: Statistics Canada Cat. No. 84F0208XPB, Causes of Death 1997 The formula for age-standardized death rate r is:
Description
r is equal to the summation over i, for i is between 1 and 20, of w subscript i multiplied by the ratio of d subscript i by p subscript I
Where for age group i,
is the age-sex specific death count,
is the population size for a given cause of death and geographical area, and
is the weight for that group.
Note(s): that the same weight is used for each sex. To yield a rate per 100,000 population, r is multiplied by 100,000.
The confidence intervals for the age-standardized cancer incidence rates were produced using the method found in Estève et al.
For more information on the standardization of rates using the direct method, please refer to the following article found on the Association of Public Health Epidemiologists in Ontario webpage: Standardization of Rates - Namrata Bains http://www.apheo.ca/index.php?pid=193

GSS Cycle 23, Victimisation - The North, PUMF and Master File, and Aboriginal Identity
Hello,
We would like to request information please on the GSS 23 microdata files and also have one question about comparability with the GSS 18.
I have been assured by a researcher, in communication with the CCHS, that since cycle 18, when it was covered as a pilot - http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/85f0033m/85f0033m2006011-eng.htm , the North has been included in the GSS Victimization Surveys. Further to this, an upcoming issue of Juristat will be dealing with the GSS 23 and the North. The Main Product page may be misleading in this regard: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/bsolc/olc-cel/olc-cel?catno=12M0023X&lang=eng
1. Was the North covered in cycle 23 and if so, will this data be available, e.g., through DLI as a separate PUMF(s) and will it be available through the RDC's through the master file(s)?
2. Is it correct that the SOR_Q110 Sexual orientation question been suppressed on the PUMF? …from page 328 of the questionnaire: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/meta/gss-esg/cycle23-2009/gssc-esgc23que-eng.pdf
3. Will/does the GSS 23 master file(s) provide postal code detail?
4. We noticed that the sample size for Aboriginal groups decreased in 2009 (668 in 2009, down from the sample size in 2004). We also noticed that the questions were quite different: Aboriginal identify (yes/no in cycle 23) and Background (Aboriginal= 13 … one of multiple responses regarding cultural or racial backgrounds),
- Why did this number decrease? We have some questions about coding and comparability …
- In 2004 were responses for Aboriginal coded even if someone gave up to 3 other ethnicities?
- Is it possible that “only” people who identified primarily with an Aboriginal group would have responded to the 2009 question (ie mixed ancestry people didn’t identify as part Aboriginal in 2009 the way they might have in 2004)?
CYCLE 23
AIR_Q110 Are you an Aboriginal person, (for this survey an Aboriginal person refers to, First Nations’[North American Indian], Métis or Inuk [Inuit])?
1 Yes = 668
2 No Go to end of module
Don’t know Go to end of module
Refusal Go to end of module
CYCLE 18
VMS_Q110 Canadians come from many cultural or racial backgrounds. I'm going to read you a list. Are you:
INTERVIEWER: Accept a maximum of 4 responses.
INTERVIEWER: Read categories to respondent.
11 ... White?
12 ... Chinese?
13 ... Aboriginal? (that is, North American Indian, Métis or Inuit)
14 ... South Asian? (for example, East Indian, Sri Lankan, etc.)
15 ... Black?
etc.
Thank you very much for any help you can provide,
Answer
The author division provided the following information in response to your recent questions about the General Social Survey cycle 23 - victimization PUMF:
Question 1: "Cycle 23 did sample the North but the data is separate from the main Cycle 23 collection and will be released to the RDCs (Research Data Centres) in the summer. There is no PUMF planned for the North due to confidentiality and privacy concerns."
Question 2: Yes, SOR_Q110 is suppressed on the PUMF.
Question 3: Postal code is suppressed on the PUMF but available on the analytical file (i.e. the file in the RDCs).
Question 4: "For Cycle 23, the number of Aboriginal respondents did decrease slightly by 15 respondents (from 683 in Cycle 18 to 668 in Cycle 23) as our sample size had decreased since 2004. However, the weighted Aboriginal population did increase to 877,496 for 2009, up from 628,391 in 2004. As mentioned, it is important to note that the question which was used to identify the Aboriginal population in the 2009 victimization survey is different than that used in 2004 and 1999. The question in Cycle 23 (2009) is now in line with what the census uses. The 2009 results for the Aboriginal population should not, therefore, be directly compared with those from previous victimization surveys. "
I hope that this information is helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions.

CCHS 2009/2010
How can a researcher access CCHS 2009/2010 data if the PUMF isn't yet released? Would they need to go through an RDC if the PUMF isn't released?
Answer
The CCHS 2009/2010 PUMF is scheduled to be released in September 2011 (please note that this is a tentative date). This PUMF therefore won't be available through any channels before that date.
The CCHS 2009-2010 analytical file is currently available through the RDCs for researchers with an accepted proposal. The researcher may wish to approach your local RDC (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/rdc-cdr/network-reseau-eng.htm) if this is of interest.
CCHS 2009-2010 aggregate data are also available in the products described under Link to related products on the left side bar on: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=3226&lang=en&db=imdb&adm=8&dis=2
Custom tables with CCHS 2009-2010 data are available for purchase on request. If this is of interest to your researcher, I will be happy to refer you to an Account Executive who can confirm what tables can be produced and provide cost estimates.
I hope that this information is helpful. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Thank you.

Tsuu T'ina Nation Statistics
I am looking for the rate of diabetes, suicide rate, and addiction rates for the indigenous peoples of the Tsuu T'ina Nation near Calgary, AB. Please let me know where I can find these rates.
Answer
Health Canada has produced "Acting On What We Know: Preventing Youth Suicide in First Nations" http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fniah-spnia/pubs/promotion/_suicide/prev_youth-jeunes/index-eng.php Statistics are not included specifically for the T'suu T'ina nation but there may be some items of interest in the report.
The Public Health Agency of Canada produced a Diabetes Surveillance Data - http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/ccdpc-cpcmc/ndss-snsd/english/diabetes_data/index-eng.php
Health Canada also has an extensive list of links on Addiction and Substance Abuse in First Nations, Inuit and Aboriginal Health here http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fniah-spnia/pubs/substan/index-eng.php
Several journal articles are available from Pimatisiwin: A Journal of Aboriginal and Indigenous Community Health
http://www.pimatisiwin.com/online/?s=suicide which is supported by Native Counseling Services of Alberta.
Suicides in Alberta is available from the Alberta Ministry of Justice - 2007 being the latest issue - http://justice.alberta.ca/programs_services/fatality/ocme/Publications_OCME/SuicidesinAlberta2007.aspx/DispForm.aspx?ID=30
The tables do not specify aboriginal/non-aboriginal population but do list a breakdown by Regional Health Authority and Place of Residence.
This may be a good site to starting point for finding the data you require http://www.calgaryhealthregion.ca/programs/aboriginal/index.htm. This report looks quite useful http://www.fsin.com/healthandsocial/childportal/images/Health%20Status%20and%20Health%20needs%20of%20Aborigtinal%20Children%20and%20Youth.pdf
You may also find this web page it is the Health Canada First Nations, Inuit & Aboriginal Health http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fniah-spnia/index-eng.php
Additional Information
In addition to the sources recommended by others, the 2006 Aboriginal Population Profile for Calgary in 2006 Aboriginal Population Profiles for Selected Cities and Communities (89-638-XWE) may be of interest. The introduction states that "This report examines the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the Aboriginal population living in the census metropolitan area (CMA) of Calgary. The census metropolitan area of Calgary includes the Tsuu T'ina Nation (Tsuu T'ina Nation 145)." Health is discussed at the very end of the publication. (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/89-638-x/2010003/article/11076-eng.htm)
The report draws from the 2006 Aboriginal Peoples Survey (APS). The APS 2006 public use microdata file (PUMF) which is available through the DLI includes variables on diabetes, alcohol consumption, drug abuse and suicide but wouldn't provide data on the Tsuu T'ina Nation specifically.
The 2006 Profile of Aboriginal Children, Youth and Adults (http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/dp-pd/89-635/index.cfm?Lang=eng) provides a wide range of data for Alberta, Alberta (rural) and Alberta (urban), including health data on diabetes which may be of interest.
Other data may be available on a custom basis for a fee. If this is of interest to your user, please let me know and I will refer you to an Account Executive who can confirm what custom tables can be produced and at what cost.
Indian and Northern Affairs Canada or Health Canada may also provide relevant statistics through their websites.
I hope that this information is helpful. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS)
We received the following question off list about the field of study groups in the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) files the DLI receives. We are sharing it through the dlilist as it may be of interest to other DLI contacts.
Question
I just downloaded PSIS files for a professor. The fields of study are a bit broad for him. He wants to know whether there is any information on what is included under each field.
Answer
The 12 fields in the University enrolments, by province of study and by field of study, annual (number), 1992-1993 to 2008-2009 PSIS table the DLI receives are the "Special Aggregation Structure: Primary Groupings" (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/subjects-sujets/standard-norme/instruction/cip-cpe-spec2000-eng.htm). The division responsible for PSIS also referred us to the Field of Study - Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP2000) codesC which will show your client how the finer levels of the CIP are assigned to these primary groupings:
"Field of Study - Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP2000) codes
The combination of the program names, program codes and specialization or major field of study provided by the postsecondary institutions is classified using the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP2000), the official classification used at Statistics Canada for the classification of program(s) of study. The CIP taxonomy provides more than 1200 codes and is organized on three (3) levels: a 2-digit series, a 4-digit series, and a 6-digit program level. Please refer to: http://stds.statcan.gc.ca/cip-cpe/2digit-2chiffres-eng.asp

Divorce in Canada
I've been asked for the most recent divorce rate statistics in Canada. Specifically, what the student needs is
"the number of divorces where a custody order was granted out of total cases involving custody orders, and determining if there are any upward trends in recent years."Divorce statistics seem to stop in 2005. According to the IMDB, the Vital Statistics - Divorce Database is still active, yet the latest data release was Nov 2008. The status of the publication Divorces in Canada (Catalogue no.: 84F0213XWE) is listed as "ongoing/available", yet it too has not been updated since Nov 2008. (How can a publication be listed as an annual and yet not publish for more than two years?) Is there someplace else I should be looking, or is 2005 data the best I can do?
Answer
You are right in indicating that the latest marriage and divorce data available are for 2005 and the publication and Cansim tables will be ready shortly. Afterwards, because of budget contraints, Health Statistics Division will stop producing this publication.
That being said, Health Statistics Division is now working on a project for a client on divorce data for the years 2006 to 2008. There will be a brief announcement in the Daily announcing the availability of these data, likely in April. In the mean time, we will pursue with the Division the possibility of having these tables available to the DLI. We will keep you posted.
For marriage data, you will probably have to go the Provincial Vital Statistics Offices. In doing so, keep in mind that all provinces don't report the same way. For example, for same sex marriage, some provinces will report Spouse 1 and Spouse 2 and will not report sex. It is impossible at this point to get uniform reporting.
Survey of Drinking Water Plants
A team of researchers studying water quality and “containment feed” models would like to obtain the list of drinking water plants used in the Survey of Drinking Water Plants (survey #5149). Would you be able to indicate whether this is possible – or is there someone else that we should contact?
Answer
We consulted the group responsible for the Survey of Drinking Water Plants and such a list unfortunately is not available. More specifically, they indicated that "At this time we do not have a product that provides information about the physical location of water & wastewater utilities in Canada.". I will send you the coordinates of a research officer the research team can consult if they have any follow up questions related to this request.
Concentration ratios and Herfindahl indexes
In order to prepare for an upcoming discussion with the division that produces concentration ratios and Herfindahl indexes (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/ftp/crhi-rcih-eng.htm), we would be interested in information about use of and demand for these products in DLI member institutions (e.g. How would you describe demand for these products in your institution? What type of users request these files? What files would they ideally like to access?).
If you have any information about use or demand for concentration ratios and Herfindahl indexes by your clients, we would be grateful if you could please send me this information by email at marie-claire.lauzon@statcan.gc.ca.
Thank you and please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Thank you.
More NGS Questions
We have another NGS question... Any help would be greatly appreciated - here is my student's request:
"I am looking into brain drain, and am interested to see the differences in wage earnings of individuals who moved to the US with how much they would have earned if they stayed back in Canada. My supervisor and I looked into the NGS data and couldn't find the wage variable identifying the individuals who moved to the US and the field of study of those who did move. It'd be great if you could inform me whether these variables are available or not, and the name of the variable"
Answer
Subject-matter specialists in the division that manages the National Graduates Survey (NGS) have provided the following information in response to your student's question. As the variables they list are not available on the NGS 2005 PUMF, the student may wish to see if the RDC analytical file could be used for this project. Data for the variables listed below would also available on a custom basis for a fee.
"Here are some variables that you can use. Not sure if they’re what you’re looking for.
You can only use the information for job held last week. We do have income for 2011 however this does not tell us if respondent lived in the US for 6 months and is now back in Canada.

Average Amount of Screen Time of Children by Province
I'm looking for the average amount of screen time of children by province.
Any suggestions, please?
Answer
The CCHS 2007-2008 public use microdata file includes variables related to Sedentary Activities (SAC) (e.g. number of hours on a computer, playing video games, watching television/videos, etc.), age range variables and province-level variables which could be of interest to your client. Your client may wish to have a look at the survey's documentation and the description of the SAC related variables to determine if they are appropriate for his/her project.
The following Health Reports article includes Canada-level statistics on screen time of children and youth that may be of interest to your client.
Shields, Margot. Overweight and obesity among children and youth. Health Reports. vol. 17 no. 3
Abstract: "More than a quarter - 26% - of 2- to 17-year-olds were overweight or obese in 2004. Low consumption of vegetables and fruit was associated with excess weight among this age group. As screen time (watching TV, playing video games, using a computer) increased, so did the likelihood that young people would be overweight/obese." http://www.statcan.gc.ca/bsolc/olc-cel/olc-cel?lang=eng&catno=82-003-X20050039277
The following CANSIM table has provincial data on children's participation in sedentary activities by age group and sex and may also be of interest to your client:
CANSIM Table 105-2005 Children's participation in sedentary activities, in hours per week, by age group and sex, household population aged 12 to 17, Canadian Community Health Survey cycle 2.2, Canada and provinces, occasional
Data on screen time of children may also be available for a fee on a custom basis. If your client wishes to look into this option, we will refer your client to an Account-Executive who can confirm what types of tables could be produced and at what cost.
I hope that this information is helpful. If you have other questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Historical Provincial GDP
A researcher would like to have provincial GDP for the period 1950-1981 – preferably in quarterly form. Can you direct me to a source for these stats?
Answer
We have looked into your question below and have obtained confirmation that quarterly GDP estimates by province are not available. The division that disseminates provincial GSD estimates provided the following explanation and suggestions in response to your question:
" The Provincial Economic Accounts are only produced on an annual basis and quarterly GDP estimates by province are not available.
Secondly, provincial GDP estimates have been calculated starting with the reference year 1961 and no estimate exists at Statistics Canada prior to that year. It is important to note that the methodologies to derive the provincial estimates for the period 1981 to date are different than those that were used for the period 1961 to 1980. Those differences are explained in the document:
Latest Developments in the Canadian Economic Accounts (www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/13-605-x/2003001/chrono/4066065-eng.htm).
The provincial GDP estimates for the years 1961 to 1981, using the old methodologies, are presented in the catalogue 13-213S. You can also find the 1961 to 1980 estimates in CANSIM table 384-0015."
I hope that this is helpful. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions.
Acres of Organic Agriculture in Canada
A researcher is wanting “ information on total number of acres of organic agriculture in Canada. “ I have been looking through the 2006 Census of Agriculture DLI tables and can see info on the numbers of farms reporting organic products, but not the numbers of acres cultivated using organic practices. Is this info available?
Answer
I asked our Census of Agriculture contacts about your question and they unfortunately don't have data on acres of organic agriculture in Canada. They explained that while they know what farms declare organic products, they don't know how much of the farm is organic. If a farm operator declares hay and field crops organic products they don't know if all of the field crops are organic or only selected field crops.
You may wish to see if data on this topic are available from other organizations and departments (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada for example).
I hope that this confirmation is helpful.
Non-Native Speakers of English and the Law
Any suggestions about data on this topic? I think the person is looking for articles discussing discrimination between police and new immigrants noting that there could be both a language and a cultural barrier.
I've been poking around looking for questions whether people have felt they were discriminated against due to culture or language but seem to be spinning my wheels.
Answer
The Immigrants and Victimization, 2004 issue of the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics Profile Series, 2008 (85F0033MWE2008018) includes a section on Immigrants’ perceptions of the criminal justice system which may be of interest to your client (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/bsolc/olc-cel/olc-cel?catno=85F0033MWE2008018&lang=eng).
The author draws on the General Social Survey (GSS) cycle 18 (2004) on victimization o your client may also be interested in the GSS cycle 18 and 23 PUMFs that are available through the DLI and which include variables on topics such as language of respondent, contact with police, discrimination and perception.
I hope that this suggestion is helpful.

Postal Code Conversion File (PCCF)
We received the following question about the postal code conversion file (PCCF) by email off-list and are sharing it with the dlilist as it may be of interest to other DLI contacts. Thank you.
Question
"I have a question from a medical researcher regarding retired postal codes. Is it possible for individuals to continue using postal codes long after they have been retired? The researcher is working with hospital admitting data and is finding that approximately 6% of the patients' postal codes do not have a match in the corresponding PCCF; this is after the postal codes have been checked for errors. I have sent the researcher a copy of the auxilliary 2005 retired postal codes file which he will check against the missing ones.
Thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide with this question."
Answer
"The researcher will want to make sure that the vintage (postal code reference date) of the PCCF issue he/she is using matches the dataset (e.g. if the researcher is looking at individuals admitted in April 2007 and wants 2006 Census geography, the researcher will want to be using the April 2007 PCCF.)
The researcher can also check the retired postal code file to determine if the postal codes that don't have a match in the PCCF have been retired. Based on your message, I think that the researcher is already doing this.
When we asked our geography consultants to advise, they mentioned that "Postal codes do vary, with retirements and “re-births” occurring all the time.". They agreed with the suggestions above and also indicated that "It is important to know WHEN the postal code was recorded in the hospital records, it is possible that upon re-admittance at a later date, the postal code field may not be updated if the street address stayed the same (i.e. the nurse asks, “do you still live at 123 Anystreet in Anyplace, anyProvince”, if the answer is yes, they may not bother to ask, “is your postal code still ANA NAN?”)"
If there are still some issues with some specific postal codes after having checked that the correct issue of the PCCF is being used and that the codes haven't been retired, our geography consultants indicated that they could investigate those specific codes to see if there is anything they can find. I hope that these suggestions are helpful to the researcher. Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions."
2006 FSA Boundary Files
Are the 2006 FSA boundary files included in the dbf files on the DLI web site, or are they somewhere else?
Answer
DLI geography files are not available on the DLI website but you can download them from the DLI FTP site (stcftp.statcan.ca).
To access the 2006 FSA boundary files:
1) Access the DLI FTP site and go to /Geography-Géographie/2006/spatial-info_dinfo-spatiale/
2) Select ArcInfo or MapInfo depending on your user's preference
3) Select dbf (Digital Boundary File) or cbf (Cartographic Boundary File) depending on your user's preference. For a brief description of the two types, see http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/guide-trousse/guide-trousse/toc-tdm/3000277-eng.htm#geo.
4) Select National
5) Select FSA-RTA. There will be two files in this directory, one English "_e.zip" and one French "_f.zip"
If you have any problems connecting to the FTP site or downloading the files, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Population Projections by CSD
Are population projections available at the level of CSD similar to the one at the level of province (CANSIM 0520005)? I am looking specifically for the CSD of Weyburn, SK.
Answer
Unfortunately, CSD level population projections are not available from Statistics Canada at this time. The division that produces population projections hopes to strengthen its capacity to do these projections, but these won't be possible in the near future.
Additional Information
I don't know about Saskatchewan but in British Columbia it's the provincial government that publishes population projections for municipalities and regions.

Financial Management System
We have a researcher looking for the most recent data on the Financial Management System (FMS), for fiscal years ending March 31. This is a terminated series in CANSIM 385-0022 and the data are annual. The researcher would like to know if there is any way to get quarterly numbers.
Answer
The author division has indicated that all of the series on an FMS basis are terminated since June 2009 and that there was no quarterly series for these data. If the researcher provides the author division with a more detailed description of the data they need, the division has indicated that they might be able to provide recommendations. I will send you the contact details of the person the researcher should contact if he/she wishes to look into this further.

National Graduates Survey
Good afternoon everyone!
Can someone please confirm that the name of the Institution for the respondents in NGS exists in the Master Files? I have a Graduate student looking to apply for RDC access but needs to know whether she will be able to identify the educational institutions in the file? Also would it be possible to obtain a copy of the questionnaire for the Master Files? The questionnaire that we have access to states that it is the "Release Questionnaire" which leads me to believe it is the questionnaire that links to our PUMF files.
Answer
Our education contacts have confirmed that it is not possible to identify the institution on the NGS Master file and that there is only one questionnaire (which is the same for the PUMF and the master file). They sent me one as an example and it also includes the expression "Release Questionnaire".
Additional Question
I have to admit that this is a bit shocking - I thought for sure we'd be able to identify institutions. So I have to ask is there any geographic identifiers in the Master file? I don't see any in the PUMF.
Answer
The author division has indicated that the analytical file includes a provincial level geographic identifier.

ACS and SNC Documentation
I am trying to locate the documentation for the Aboriginal Children's Survey and the Survey of Northern Children.
I found a page on which it said you could link to the questionnaire for ACS http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/af-fdr.cgi?l=eng&loc=http://www.statcan.gc.ca/imdb-bmdi/instrument/5108_Q2_V1_E-eng.pdf but when I tried that I got to a File Not Found page.
I didn't find the questionnaire or anything else for the SNC.
Answer
Questionnaires for the ACS / SNC 2006 are available at http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getInstrumentDocLink&SurvId=29174&SurvVer=1&InstaId=29175&InstaVer=1&lang=en&db=imdb&adm=8&dis=2
I accessed this page from the ACSs description in the Definitions, data sources and methods section of the StatCan website (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=5108&lang=en&db=imdb&adm=8&dis=2). This page also includes the following information about the SNC: "In 2006, the Survey of Northern Children, originally a component of the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (record number 4450), was incorporated into the Aboriginal Children's Survey to provide information on the health and development of children, under the age of 6 years, living in the territories."
If you let me know from which page you linked to the broken link below, I will inform the appropriate unit.
I hope that this helps. Please let me know if you experience any problems accessing these files.
Precription Statistics
A researcher here is interested in: "the start date of and number of prescriptions given out for inhaled corticosteroid medications for asthma and allergic rhinitis in North America". Of particular interest are the specific medications: Fluticisone (Flovent, Flonase-GSK) and Budesonide (Pulmicort- Asta Zeneca) which came into use around 1990.
There are commercial publications out there, but they are pricey, and don´t give a clear indication that they´ll even have the statistics we´re after. I´ve also looked at CIHI and the US "Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services" and NIH, with no success.
Any assistance with this, on the Canadian or US aspect of this request, would be greatly appreciated.
Answer
Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, Statistics Canada does not collect these data.
We would have data on household expenditures on prescription drugs from the Survey of Household Spending, but not by brand.

Number of Aboriginal Police Officers in Canada
Does anyone know where to find the number of aboriginal police officers in Canada?
Answer
I checked the Police Administration Survey and it does not provide this information. Our Census consultant confirmed that this figure could be provided as a custom tabulation. However, the detailed data tables in the following article provide you with both the percentage of police officers who were aboriginal, and the number of police officers, and the data comes from the same source (2006 Census of population):
http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/85-002-x/2008010/article/10730-eng.htm#a11 (“Private security and public policing”, published in Juristat, December 2008)
Hopefully this article will provide you with the information your client needs without having to order a custom tabulation.
Employment Equity Data
I am not sure where to even start with this question from a researcher?
"I'm trying to find recent data on Employment Equity in the Canadian Federal Public Service, specifically Health Canada. I heard you could be of some help in this regard - please advise."
Answer
If you don't have these already ...
Employment Equity Data Report
The report is only required to be published every 5 years, with 2006 being the most recent edition. The is published every year, with 2009 being the most recent one on the Web:
Additional Information
While looking at the documents recommended below, I noticed that Table 1 in Appendix C of the Employment Equity Act Annual Report (2009) includes information for Health Canada.
Full Time/Part Time Work by CSD
I have a PhD student looking for number of hours worked for 2 CSDs for 1986 and 1991 censuses. Based on the example for later censuses here: http://www.communityaccounts.ca/communityaccounts/onlinedata/display_table.asp?_=0bfAjIydpaWrnbSTh5-FvKRsxKFjXHe6uJS8u5mBi8nAXWiP#footanch0, I'm guessing it will be one of two variables: Last week, how many hours did you work? and/or During most of the reference period, did you work full time or part time? I can't see any standard product (print or online) that provides this by CSD. Is there any alternative to a custom tab for this information?
Answer
The 1991 and 1986 2B Profiles for CSDs available through E-STAT may be of interest to the student. To access these:
1) Go to E-STAT
2) Click on Search Censuses in E-STAT
3) Select a Census, click Go
4) Select 1991 (2B) detailed questionnaire, Provinces to municipalities or 1986 (2B) detailed questionnaire, Provinces to Municipalities
5) Select the desired geographic areas and characteristics (options include: Males - Worked full year, full time (33), Males - Worked part year or part time (34), Females - Worked full year, full time (33), Females - Worked part year or part time (34))
The following Basic Summary Tables (BSTs) from the 1991 and 1986 Census may be of interest as well. They are available on the DLI FTP site. Please note that the student would need to work with the files using a statistical analysis application like SPSS.
For 1991:
N9102 Population 15 years and over by age groups (17) and sex (3), work activity in 1990 (15) (20%)
N9105 Employed labour force 15 years and over by age groups (17a) and sex (3), hours worked in reference week (10) (20%)
The University of Toronto describes these files on their site at: http://datalib.chass.utoronto.ca/cc91/cc91bsts.htm
For 1986:
LF86B07 - labour force 15 years and over by work activity in 1985 (14) (number of weeks worked in 1985 and whether these weeks were mostly full or part time) and sex (3)
This and other 1986 BSTs are described on the University of Toronto website at: http://datalib.chass.utoronto.ca/cc86/cc86bst.htm
Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions or if these don't meet the student's needs.

Inter-Provincial Migration - Students (Additional Question)
Hi all,
This is a similar question to previously asked, but I thought I'd give it a shot to see if there might be a special publication or another source I might be missing.
I have a researcher looking for data on student mobility between the Canadian provinces in the past 10 years. She's specifically interested in students from Atlantic Canadian provinces who migrate to other Atlantic provinces for university purposes.
I'm fairly certain universities themselves have this data through their registration records, but is there anything else I can suggest?
Answer
The following Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) table may be of interest: University enrolments, by province of residence of study, annual (number), 1992/1993 to 2008/2009. It shows the province in which the student resided when they first applied to university crossed by the province they are studying in and is available on the DLI FTP or the DLI website at http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/ftp/psis-siep-eng.htm. (I asked our education contacts about this table and they indicated that it could be helpful but also mentioned that one of the variables is sometimes not well-reported, and that its use may be limited.)
Our education contacts also indicated that the National Graduates Survey (NGS) includes variables that could be used to study student mobility. The NGS was however only conducted in 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005 and the researcher would need to apply for access through a RDC or submit a request for custom (fee based) data because the variables of interest aren't on the public use microdata file. Our contacts also explained that "The NGS survey is using graduating students only (students who graduated and left the province and completed a diploma), more specifically: Among all of the graduates who lived in the Atlantic provinces before studying, who graduated in 2005, x% left the Atlantic provinces and x% did not."
I hope that this information is helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions.

IO Coefficients
Greetings:
I have another hard-working Ag grad student working with IO tables. She is working with the 2006 Medium and Link Levels, and would like the “labour coefficient(s?)” and the “capital coefficient(s?).
She is also asking if “land usage” enters into or is an element in the Tables.
Answer
Our contacts in the division that produces these I/O tables have provided the following response to the student's questions:
"The value of land does not enter into our I/O Tables and by definition, since land is a non-depreciable asset, it also does not factor into the I/O surplus indirectly either (depreciation charges for non-land assets for a given industry are conceptually measured in the I/O surplus).
We produce linear transformations of the I/O tables to calculate outputs resulting from a final demand shock – say exports) by means of an “impact” or multiplier matrix. From that model, we have “technology” and “market share” coefficients but many more coefficients may be calculated depending on specific formulas employed. Labour coefficients and capital coefficients may be available (or may be derived) but without the actual algebraic formula, we are blind.
Maybe you can have the student provide us with an actual formula that is of interest to them."
I will send you the coordinates of the person who sent us this information. This will allow the student to contact him directly if she wants to provide a more detailed description of the information she needs.

International Trade Flows (S-Level aggregation)
Good morning, everyone.
I have a PhD student who is using provincial I-O multipliers (S-level), and he would like corresponding import and export between the US & the Canadian provinces - also at the S-level aggregation (25 industries). I'm able to find various almost-perfect numbers, but nothing which provides everything he needs. The closest we've come is Industry Canada's Trade Data Online site; however, it only provides about 8 or 10 of the industries he needs.
He's willing to entertain the possibility of purchasing a custom table, but ideally he'd prefer to get the data at no cost. If this is not possible, could you send me the name of someone he could contact to get an estimate?
Thanks for any suggestions.
Answer
The International Trade Division can provide import and export data by NAICS code but there would be a fee for this service. I will send you contact details for this off list.
Our contacts suspect that the data available in Industry Canada's Trade Data Online may meet your user's needs and suggested that you look at the NAICS codes listed under "Browse List" in the "Industry Search" scroll down menu. If these aren't specific enough, the student may wish to request a quote for custom data.
If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
