Prohibition Statistics

Question

I`d like to ask for your ideas please on a request we have received for historic statistical information. Has anyone researched this subject or know of any useful starting points that you could help us with?

This is for an undergraduate history paper, so of course it is a rush. The student has requested "numbers that were results of prohibition. When I say criminal charges I mean in all forms from murder, violence, bootlegging, possession and trafficking. And for numbers in death I am referring to the deaths that were due to organized crime and alcohol
poisoning (naturally due to deadly alcohol)".

Without having researched this before, I think the student is looking statistics which I think are fairly unfindable without some pretty big interpretation of historic crime and cause of death statistics around prohibition times (which is a "patchwork", longest in PEI at the turn of the century, and varying by municipality, and then later mandatory in Alberta and Ontario from 1916 to the mid 1920's and never made mandatory by the federal government).

Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated :).

Answer

As mentioned off-list, the Canada Year Book Historical Collection may contain some interesting prohibition-related facts (http://www65.statcan.gc.ca/acyb_r000-eng.htm; http://www65.statcan.gc.ca/acyb_r002-eng.htm).

The student may also wish to try searching periodical indexes, newspaper indexes and books on the topic to locate relevant statistics.

Number of International Students

Question

Could someone tell me where I get current numbers of international students in Canada and the countries of origin? Thanks.

Answer

A Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) table showing the number of international students in Canada in colleges and universities has also just been added to the DLI Collection (please see: 10. University enrolments, by province of study and immigration status, annual (number), 1992/1993 to 2007/2008 (xls) at http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/ftp/psis-siep-eng.htm). It may be of interest to your client.

International students by country of origin would be available for a fee as a custom tabulation. If this is of interest, please let me know and I will be pleased to refer you to an Account-Executive who could provide additional information and a quote.

Question About the 2006 Census PUMF

Question

A researcher here has been looking at the number of individuals living with children. She compared PKIDHH to the count obtained for PKID0_1 through PKID25, and found a discrepancy, finding about 21,000 fewer in the sum than in PKIDHH.  Should these figures match? She can’t figure out what the problem is and hopes for assistance with it.

Answer

I received the following explanation from our contacts in response to your question:

"The variables are not defined at the same level.

  • PKIDxTOx are defined as the number of people in a census family with children.

  • PKIDHH is defined as the number of people in a household containing a census family with children (that includes some people who are not in a census family)."

Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions.

Waste Water Treatment Plants and Sludge

Question

A student working for a faculty member in Engineering was in touch with the Statistics Canada information number (1-800-263-1136). He is looking for data on the number of municipal waste water treatment plants in Canada. He is also interested in obtaining data on the amount of primary and secondary sludge produced by the plants, or, if such a level of detail is not available, for the total amount of sludge produced. He was informed by the telephone contact at Statistics Canada that they would charge him for these data, but if he went through the DLI, these data would be available for free.

I’m not sure to what resources I should be referring him – help, please!

Answer

The person who was assisting your student thought that counts of municipal waster water treatment plants might be available through Canadian Business Patterns (CBP) and therefore referred him to the DLI. The division that produces CBP confirmed that the product can provide counts of establishments and locations for a NAICS code that includes municipal waterworks (NAICS 221310 (water supply and irrigation systems) but indicated that this code would however also include private sector companies and that some of the plants may also be in NAICS 912910. They indicated that, overall, CBP may not give an accurate and exhaustive count of municipal waste water treatment plants.

A tabulation of the number of sewage treatment plants in Canada will be provided in the publication "Human Activity and the Environment", to be released in the fall of 2010. The division that produces this publication indicated that "The data source for the inventories of sewage plants was from a number of sources such as provincial administrative files, provincial web sites and reports, municipal/local government web sites and reports and calls to owner/operators."

We unfortunately do not have an active survey to collect sludge production data from municipal waste water treatment plants. The student may therefore wish to look into provincial and other federal sources (Environment Canada, perhaps) as well as relevant industry associations (if these exist) to see if they collect sludge production figures.

I hope that these suggestions are helpful.

Education Updates to 2006 Census Dictionary and Education Reference Guide

March 9, 2010 RELEASE: Education updates to the 2006 Census Dictionary and the Education Reference Guide, 2006 Census

As a follow-up to the March 4, 2008 release of education data, the 2006 Census Dissemination Project is pleased to announce that updates have been made to the education content in the 2006 Census Dictionary and the Education Reference Guide, 2006 Census. The Education Reference Guide was originally released on August 5, 2008.

The updates to the Education Reference Guide, 2006 Census were made to include updates to its content regarding classification and concordance tables, secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent and major field of study.

The updates to the 2006 Census Dictionary were made to include updates to their content regarding concordance tables and the comparability of 2006 education data with that of previous censuses. Empirical concordance tables between systems of classification of the Major field of study variable have also been added to the Dictionary.

The updates to the 2006 Census Dictionary include:

Updates to six existing definitions for education variables:
Attendance at school
Degree in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or optometry
Highest certificate, diploma or degree
Major Field of Study – Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP)
Major Field of Study (MFS)
Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent

The addition of two new definitions:

Major Field of Study – Major Field of Study (MFS) and Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) empirical concordance

Major Field of Study – Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) and Major Field of Study (MFS) empirical concordance

The addition of two new appendices S and T to show the concordance tables:

Appendix S: Major Field of Study – Empirical concordance tables between Major Field of Study (MFS) and Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) Canada 2000 codes

Appendix T: Major Field of Study – Empirical concordance tables between Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) Canada 2000 codes and Major Field of Study (MFS)

The MFS-CIP and CIP-MFS empirical concordances present relationships between categories of the Major Field of Study (MFS) classification and those of the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP Canada 2000), based on information provided by the 2006 Census. The concordances provide mappings of the distributional relationships between the two classifications and can be used to convert counts from one classification system to the other.

For the Major field of study variable, the 2006 Census marked the transition year between the variable classified under the new CIP (Canada 2000) classification and the MFS classification used in previous censuses. Future censuses will present information coded to the CIP classification system only.

The concordance tables and accompanying explanatory notes can be found in Appendix S (MFS-CIP) and Appendix T (CIP-MFS) of the 2006 Census Dictionary (Internet only). Tables are presented for three common levels of aggregation of both classification systems and are available for free to all users via the Internet in HTML and downloadable CSV formats.

Please note that the Info-Census article entitled Census questions on education has been updated to reflect some
important changes associated with the historical comparability of some education variables.

As of 8:30 a.m. (Ottawa time) today, the updated 2006 Census Dictionary and the updated Education Reference Guide, 2006 Census are available for free to all users, via the Internet. The 2006 Census Dictionary is available in HTML and PDF formats, while Appendix S and Appendix T are available in HTML format only. The Education Reference Guide, 2006 Census is available in HTML format only.

Thank you.

Saskatchewan Birth Stats

Question

I have a request from a grad student who's looking for SK birth stats by census division. She's been able to find CANSIM tables containing that data, but they're based on a July to June (half of one year and half of the following year) time frame and she'd like to find data that's based on the calendar year instead. So far I've drawn a complete blank.

Answer

Our contacts have confirmed that the only way to get births statistics for Saskatchewan for census divisions by calendar year would be via a custom tabulation (with a minimum cost of $350).This being said, they also indicated that due to data quality issues, they are not currently in a position to produce these tables. They are however making some changes to their coding and expect to be able to provide sub-provincial level data in the future. They expect to be able to start releasing sub-provincial data once again this summer.

I hope that this information is helpful.
