Census Data on Activity Limitation

Question

Regarding activity limitation data in the Census, Question 8 refers to mental or physical health problems which reduce the type of activity that a person is able to do. I have started a search for the tables that include the data from this question and so far I have not been able to find it. Any clues?

Answer

The 2006 Census questions 7 and 8 are filter questions used to create the survey frame for the post-censal Participation and Activity Limitation Survey.  Here is a quote from the PALS 2006 PUMF User Guide (cat. no. 12M0021G):

“The PALS adult survey population consisted of all persons 15 years of age or older living in households who reported at least one limitation to the Census questions on activity limitations and who were living in Canada at the time of the Census.”

Page 13 of the 2006 Census Dictionary will provide you with more detail on those filter questions:  http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/ref/dict/pdf/92-566-eng.pdf

The Census Dictionary also advises users to look to PALS for disability data: “The PALS will be the primary source for disability data in 2006, since it provides a better identification of the population and more detailed information on its characteristics.  Disability data from the 2006 Census will be available upon special request only. The 2006 Census disability data have minimum edits and should be used with caution” (p.14).
