Research & Development and Money Spent in Energy Efficiency Programs

I have a client who is looking for the following information: 

“I was trying to find at StatsCan if they have the numbers of how much of R&D is being spent in Energy Efficiency programs and what programs, if possible, segregated by province. I found a general expenditures table (https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quotidien/180828/cg-b001-eng.htm), but I wanted to find something more specific on the provinces and programs as well. Do you think this kind of information is available?”

Answer from DLI:
Good question.  I hope StatCan is gathering this from different sources.  I noticed that the federal government reports on this, but this excludes non federal government R & D investments.

In case you run into roadblocks, Natural Resources Canada’s Office of Energy Research and Development (OERD) is the Government of Canada's co-ordinator of energy research and development (R&D) activities. [https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/energy/offices-labs/oerd/5711] Please see the reports / publications to the right.  This will exclude other funders. 

I don’t know if this next source is overly narrow I think because it includes only NRCan as a funder but it breaks down into technology areas [https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/energy/funding/21146] and by Locations (provinces).  On the other hand, I’m not sure there are other targeted energy efficiency R & D programs.

“No – we do not provide any detail on energy-related R&D expenditures at the provincial/territorial level.

Table 27-10-0347-01 does provide a breakdown by area of technology.  This is the lowest level of detail we provide for energy-related R&D expenditure data.”

Energy Stats for Canada

Question

I have a student who is looking for the energy consumption and source (I assume he means production) for Canada for years 1932 and 1993. I have no problem finding stats for 1993, but having trouble with 1932.

For example, I found Cansim table 128-0003 – Supply and demand of primary and secondary in natural units. Is there anything else, I should be looking at? Could you please help me find the stats for 1932?

Try the Canada Year Book, 1932 <http://www66.statcan.gc.ca/eng/acyb_c1932-eng.aspx?opt=/eng/1932/193200050000_Title%20Page.pdf>. There is a chapter (pp. 287-304) on water power and a section on fuel (coal/natural gas/petroleum, pp. 278-282); mineral production of Canada by provinces (p.253) includes coal, natural gas, peat, crude petroleum (for 1930, so you might want the 1934 book).

Electric Power Thermal Generating Station Fuel Consumption

Question

He located a few tables in CANSIM, but they don’t provide what he needs. Do we have access to this data?

Answer

The data that is available is through CANSIM. We do not have any other tables from the Annual Survey of Electric Power Thermal Generating Station Fuel Consumption. If the student would like more precise data, I would need to inquire if a custom tab is possible. Note that confidentiality analysis includes the detection of possible direct disclosure, which occurs when the value in a tabulation cell is composed of a few respondents or when the cell is dominated by a few companies.

Percent of Houshold Income Spent on Energy

Question

I am trying to find a comparative statistics for percent of household income spent on home energy (home energy is the sum of a) electricity, b) natural gas and c) other fuel for heating and cooking). The comparison I am looking for is between the Canadian household average, vs. the household average in Nunatsiavut, northern Labrador. The five communities that make up Nunatsiavut are: Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik and Rigolet.

I was able to find the desired information for Canadian household average, and Newfoundland and Labrador through consulting the Survey of Household Expenditure and CANSIM.

Would an RDC be able to provide statistics for percent of household income spent on home energy preferably with a breakdown for electricity, natural gas and other fuel for heating and cooking) for the smaller geographies? So, Nunatsiavut (and, if possible, Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik and Rigolet). Alternatively is there another way of getting these data?

Answer

We hope to have an internal database available in the RDC’s in March or April 2013. Note: Due to low sample counts, the smallest representative geography that SHS data produce, as a general guideline, is at the CMA or Economic Region level. After consulting the rules of suppression, maybe the E.R. or a combination of E.R.s containing the desired community or communities may be a possibility. Another possible solution would be a custom tabulation, which is cost recoverable.

Office of Energy Efficiency: Comprehensive Energy Use Database

The Comprehensive Energy Use Database provides an overview of sectoral energy markets in Canada and in each region of the country. These tables are intended to complement data published in the upcoming edition of the Energy Use Data Handbook, 1990 to 2008.
