Quebec Universities' Financial Information

Question:

I have a student who is looking for statistical information about equipment purchases made by Quebec universities for the following years: 1980, 1982, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2005 et 2007.

Answer:

The best place to look would be the Financial Information of Universities and Colleges Survey (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=3121&lang=fr&db=imdb&adm=8&dis=2). The Financial Information of Universities and Colleges Survey was developed to provide financial information (income and expenditures) on all universities and degree-granting colleges in Canada. Clicking on 'other reference periods' (located in the left-side menu bar), will allow you to explore other time periods.

Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS)

Hello,

We received the following question off list about the field of study groups in the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) files the DLI receives. We are sharing it through the dlilist as it may be of interest to other DLI contacts.

Question

I just downloaded PSIS files for a professor. The fields of study are a bit broad for him. He wants to know whether there is any information on what is included under each field.

Answer

The 12 fields in the University enrolments, by province of study and by field of study, annual (number), 1992-1993 to 2008-2009 PSIS table the DLI receives are the "Special Aggregation Structure: Primary Groupings" (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/subjects-sujets/standard-norme/instruction/cip-cpe-spec2000-eng.htm). The division responsible for PSIS also referred us to the Field of Study - Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP2000) codesC which will show your client how the finer levels of the CIP are assigned to these primary groupings:

"Field of Study - Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP2000) codes

The combination of the program names, program codes and specialization or major field of study provided by the postsecondary institutions is classified using the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP2000), the official classification used at Statistics Canada for the classification of program(s) of study. The CIP taxonomy provides more than 1200 codes and is organized on three (3) levels: a 2-digit series, a 4-digit series, and a 6-digit program level. Please refer to: http://stds.statcan.gc.ca/cip-cpe/2digit-2chiffres-eng.asp

More NGS Questions

Question

We have another NGS question... Any help would be greatly appreciated - here is my student's request:

"I am looking into brain drain, and am interested to see the differences in wage earnings of individuals who moved to the US with how much they would have earned if they stayed back in Canada. My supervisor and I looked into the NGS data and couldn't find the wage variable identifying the individuals who moved to the US and the field of study of those who did move. It'd be great if you could inform me whether these variables are available or not, and the name of the variable"

Answer

Subject-matter specialists in the division that manages the National Graduates Survey (NGS) have provided the following information in response to your student's question. As the variables they list are not available on the NGS 2005 PUMF, the student may wish to see if the RDC analytical file could be used for this project. Data for the variables listed below would also available on a custom basis for a fee.

"Here are some variables that you can use. Not sure if they’re what you’re looking for.

You can only use the information for job held last week. We do have income for 2011 however this does not tell us if respondent lived in the US for 6 months and is now back in Canada.

CIP of program completed in Canada in 2005
PRCIP1
PRCIP2
PRCIP1AG
PRCIP2AG

Respondents who worked last week
LF_Q18 - In what country was this job located?
You might want to exclude those who said OTHER
LF_Q85 - Including tips and commissions, what is your (hourly/daily/weekly/yearly etc.) wage or salary, before taxes and other deductions?
LF_Q87 - Is this amount in Canadian or American dollars?

Respondents who have taken programs since graduation in 2005
These questions are important as a respondent might have had a BA in 2005 and now have an MA. This would influence your outcome.

National Graduates Survey

Question

Good afternoon everyone!

Can someone please confirm that the name of the Institution for the respondents in NGS exists in the Master Files? I have a Graduate student looking to apply for RDC access but needs to know whether she will be able to identify the educational institutions in the file? Also would it be possible to obtain a copy of the questionnaire for the Master Files? The questionnaire that we have access to states that it is the "Release Questionnaire" which leads me to believe it is the questionnaire that links to our PUMF files.

Answer

Our education contacts have confirmed that it is not possible to identify the institution on the NGS Master file and that there is only one questionnaire (which is the same for the PUMF and the master file). They sent me one as an example and it also includes the expression "Release Questionnaire".

Additional Question

I have to admit that this is a bit shocking - I thought for sure we'd be able to identify institutions. So I have to ask is there any geographic identifiers in the Master file? I don't see any in the PUMF.

Answer

The author division has indicated that the analytical file includes a provincial level geographic identifier.

Inter-Provincial Migration - Students (Additional Question)

Question

Hi all,

This is a similar question to previously asked, but I thought I'd give it a shot to see if there might be a special publication or another source I might be missing.

I have a researcher looking for data on student mobility between the Canadian provinces in the past 10 years. She's specifically interested in students from Atlantic Canadian provinces who migrate to other Atlantic provinces for university purposes.

I'm fairly certain universities themselves have this data through their registration records, but is there anything else I can suggest?

Answer

The following Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) table may be of interest: University enrolments, by province of residence of study, annual (number), 1992/1993 to 2008/2009. It shows the province in which the student resided when they first applied to university crossed by the province they are studying in and is available on the DLI FTP or the DLI website at http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/ftp/psis-siep-eng.htm. (I asked our education contacts about this table and they indicated that it could be helpful but also mentioned that one of the variables is sometimes not well-reported, and that its use may be limited.)

Our education contacts also indicated that the National Graduates Survey (NGS) includes variables that could be used to study student mobility. The NGS was however only conducted in 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005 and the researcher would need to apply for access through a RDC or submit a request for custom (fee based) data because the variables of interest aren't on the public use microdata file. Our contacts also explained that "The NGS survey is using graduating students only (students who graduated and left the province and completed a diploma), more specifically: Among all of the graduates who lived in the Atlantic provinces before studying, who graduated in 2005, x% left the Atlantic provinces and x% did not."

I hope that this information is helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions.

Elementary Teachers in Ontario

Question

I have the following research question:

"I am looking for information (from 2006) about employment of elementary teachers in Ontario. More specifically, I'm looking to find out information about the distribution of gender across elementary school teachers at that time."

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer

The following products may be of interest to your client.

The Elementary-Secondary Education Statistics Project (ESESP) tables in the DLI collection provide number of educators in elementary and secondary public schools, by sex in Ontario for 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 (elementary and secondary are grouped together however and the data is on "educators" - this is explained in the notes at the bottom of the tables).
http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/ftp/esesp-pseps-eng.htm

The following 2006 Census topic based tabulations on occupation have provincial level data by sex and National Occupational Classification for Statistics 2006 including “E132 Elementary school and kindergarten teachers”.
Occupation - National Occupational Classification for Statistics 2006 (720), Class of Worker (6) and Sex (3) for the Labour Force 15 Years and Over of Canada, Provinces, Territories, Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations, 2006 Census - 20% Sample Data (97-559-XCB2006011)

Occupation - National Occupational Classification for Statistics 2006 (720C), Sex (3) and Selected Demographic, Cultural, Labour Force, Educational and Income Characteristics (273) for the Population 15 Years and Over of Canada, Provinces, Territories, Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations, 2006 Census - 20% Sample Data (97-564-XCB2006005)
(Available at: http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/dp-pd/tbt/Lp-eng.cfm?LANG=E&APATH=3&DETAIL=0&DIM=0&FL=A&FREE=0&GC=0&GID=0&GK=0&GRP=1&PID=0&PRID=0&PTYPE=88971,97154&S=0&SHOWALL=0&SUB=743&Temporal=2006&THEME=74&VID=0&VNAMEE=&VNAMEF=)

This Labour Force Survey CANSIM table also provides data by NOC-S but I suspect that the occupation breakdown available here is too general for your client.

CANSIM Table 282-0010 Labour force survey estimates (LFS), by National Occupational Classification for Statistics (NOC-S) and sex, annual (persons unless otherwise noted)
v2372853 Ontario; Labour force (x 1,000); Teachers and professors [E1, E130]; Males (annual, 1987 to 2010)
v2373057 Ontario; Labour force (x 1,000); Teachers and professors [E1, E130]; Females (annual, 1987 to 2010)

If these products don't meet your client's needs, we would be happy to confirm if other data are available on a cost recovery basis as a custom tabulation.

Organizations such as provincial teachers' federations may also publish relevant statistics in their publications so you may wish to look into this as well.

International Graduate Students

Question

We have a researcher looking for data sources on:"enrollment numbers of international graduate (not undergraduate) students in each province in Canada (preferably over a number of years). "

This report has some background information on the survey used to provide some output data that is available from CANSIM:

http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/080207/dq080207a-eng.htm

But the data within the CANSIM table does not provide any information on non-resident students. Perhaps some of the variables have not been included in the CANSIM table? Does anyone know of other data sources?
Would a custom table request be able to produce the information?

Answer

These data would be available as a custom tabulation from the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS). The base price for this type of tabulation is $150 with the cost increasing for additional variables and years of data.

Ontario Immigrant Literacy Survey

Question

According to the publication Literacy Profile of Ontario's Immigrants (http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/training/literacy/immigrant/immige.pdf), the Ontario Immigrant Literacy Survey “was commissioned by the province of Ontario and carried out by Statistics Canada”. Is a microdata file available for the product, or is it available through the RDC program, or are summary data available?

It would seem that there was a pumf made of this data set! W Scott Murray of Special Surveys, is acknowledged as having provided these data toFerrar, Green and Riddle for their 2004/05 paper:
http://www.econ.ubc.ca/ine/papers/wp011.pdf

So, of course we want the pumf.......... 8-)

Answer

I consulted our Special Surveys Division and we think that the authors of the publication are referring to the Ontario Adult Literacy Survey (OALS).

A detailed description of OALS is available in the Definitions, data sources and methods section of the StatCan website (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=4433&lang=en&db=imdb&adm=8&dis=2) and in the OALS Survey Guide (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=4433&lang=en&db=imdb&adm=8&dis=2). The timing, objectives and target population of OALS seem to match those of the Ontario Immigrant Literacy Survey (OILS) described in the Literacy Profile of Ontario's Immigrants publication.

We have the OALS PUMF in the DLI collection: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/ftp/oals-eaao-eng.htm

Response

Wonderful! Same 'book', two different titles 8-) Of course, you are right. Just another example of when citations standards would have
been useful! The lack of a title page on the pdf version of the user guide
means anyone can make up their own title for it, I suppose.

Music Grads and Employment

Question

Can the DLI resources answer the following question: "the number of music majors who get jobs when they graduate?"

Answer

This may be available as a custom extraction (for a fee) from the National graduates Survey (NGS). The variables in the NGS survey PUMFs unfortunately wouldn't allow you to answer the question as the industry and instructional program groupings are too large. Visual and performing arts, and communications technologies instructional programs seem to be grouped together as are Occupations in art, culture, recreation and sport.

The music department at UVic or an industry association may have statistics on this subject. Other DLI Contacts may have some helpful suggestions for your as well.

Licensing Question

Question

A group of students is doing a project for a Business School course here at Western. The project consists of examining a business problem for an existing business, and offering data-based resolutions to the business. In this specific case, they wish to do market research.

So, working through the flow chart:

-I assume that I will be able to find them the data they need from the DLI collection (I meet with them Wednesday) >> approved

-They are authorised (students) >> approved

-To be used for academic purposes >> approved – kind of, depending on the next question

-But then what (if anything) can they give to the business (which is a requirement of the project)?

Answer

Since this is an assignment they have to do within their course, this falls within the license. They can use the data to do their work but they cannot share the data with the business. They can certainly share their analysis, this is no problem but they cannot provide the business with the data sets they used to do their analysis. The idea is that results/analysis can be shared and make public so that everyone can profit from the analysis.

I should may add one point to clarify:

The results can't be used only privately by the business unless the data are purchased. If the business doesn't want to have the analysis made public or shared, they would have to buy the data to be used from StatCan and then have the students do the analysis.

Additional Question

I’m a little unclear now as to the circumstances under which the students can give the report to the company.

How could/should the students make the report public or shared in order to give it to the company? I certainly expect that it will be given to the professor for evaluation together with the company, but suspect that that would be insufficient. Would a policy of dissemination on demand be sufficient – i.e., if they or the professor are asked for it, they would give it to other people in addition to the company? Would it need to be more active dissemination?

Answer

We had the same sort of situation here at Queen’s.  What ended up happening is that the products of the students’ work (various reports that used DLI data) were put up on a departmental ‘working paper’ site that was open to the world.  Just the reports – no data.  The local agencies that prompted these research efforts can tap into the working paper site, but so can everyone else.

Post Secondary Students and Dependents

Question
We are looking for an "education survey" which provides the following information:

1. students with dependents while they are studying

2. source of financing for tuition or at least loan or no loan.

Answer
The National Graduates Survey (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/ftp/ngs-end-eng.htm) covers both of these topics.

Here are a few of the variables I identified by browsing the codebook for the Follow-up of Graduates Survey; Class of 2000 PUMF (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/ftp/ngs-end/fog-sad2000-eng.htm).
There are additional similar variables in the codebook.

Variable Name: FDEQ02P Position: 229 Length: 1
Do you have any dependent children? (Note: This variable doesn't seem to specify "while they were studying" however.)

Variable Name: SL_Q01A Position: 100 Length: 1
What were your two main sources of funding for all of your post-secondary education...? Parents

Variable Name: SL_Q01B Position: 101 Length: 1
What were your two main sources of funding for all of your post-secondary education...? Spouse / partner

University Retention Statistics

Question

Hello all, I'm wondering if anyone can help with this.

Regarding the lit review I am doing, it would be useful if I can find any existing data (Ontario/Canada/International) on: the impact on student recruitment and retention of job placements, practicums and co-op placements either paid or unpaid.

I'm on holidays, so I'm taking the easy way out on this one ;-)

Answer

Couple links that could be of interest.

Licensing question: sharing report based upon DLI data with company

Question

Some student assignments in our Business School involve developing marketing (or other) plans for actual companies and organizations, in order to give students real-world experience. These reports are often shared with the organization at the end of the project. Instructors have asked whether students can use DLI resources in their assignments, if the results are going to be shared with a company. This is a different scenario than the one in the list of licensing examples ("Students doing an independent study for a professor, a business proposal, which might then be used to start a Centre within the university") which was approved, since the end user will be a profit-making enterprise. [Note: the data is not being shared, but rather the conclusions based upon the data obtained through the DLI.]

I suspect that the answer is no but thought I should check.

Answer

Since these projects are assignments that are required for a course, they can use the DLI data to prepare their assignment and share the plan or analysis with companies and organizations. They cannot share the data but the analysis and/or plans can be shared with anyone.

Hope this helps.
