Home births in Canada

Question
I can't seem to find any statistics on home births in the StatCan pages - CANSIM,  Health in Canada, etc. Is there anything?

Answer

The Cansim Table 102-4516 provides data on “Live births and fetal deaths (stillbirths), by place of birth (hospital and non-hospital), Canada, provinces and territories, annual”.  The term “non-hospital” is defined in the footnotes for the table: the category "Place of birth , non-hospital" includes births in private homes, in health care institutions such as nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, nursing stations and other short-term care facilities and other health care facilities not licensed to operate as hospitals by provincial, territorial or federal governments, such as free-standing birthing centres and at other specified sites.

There is also data on non-hospital births in the Canadian Maternity Experiences Survey (data tables are available on the Public Health Agency of Canada website):  http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/rhs-ssg/pdf/tab-eng.pdf

Here is the Daily release for that survey:  http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/071127/dq071127d-eng.htm

Canadian sexual assaults reported to police

Question

Does Stats Can have the percentage of overall Canadian sexual assaults that are reported to police from 1999 - 2009? For example, 36% of sexual assaults are reported to police, and 64% of them are not reported? I can only find stats on spousal sexual assaults in the GSS victimization surveys.

Answer

You will be able to get data on sexual assaults from the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey (UCR) -- in Summary Statistics on the Stats Can site, in CANSIM, and through the DLI.  But those will not include non-reported data because how would you know what is not reported if it is not reported? I think your only approach could be to use surveys like the GSS that include variables on sexual assault and whether or not the crime was reported.  For instance, the PUMF for GSS, Cycle 23 has the variable cir_d010 for "type of incident" (which includes "sexual assault") and another variable pfo_q100 for "Police find out about incident."  There is also another variable pfo_q105 (How police learned about incident).

Furthermore, the following links may help you get an idea of how much is reported and what is not reported:

Official release of the Preview of Census Products and Services

The 2011 Census Dissemination Project is pleased to announce the official release of the Preview of Census Products and Services, Catalogue no. 98-300-XWE.

The Preview of Census Products and Services represents the first official product released for the 2011 Census. It provides a complete overview of the proposed products and services that will be disseminated based on the results from both the 2011 Census of Population and 2011 Census of Agriculture. Information (where applicable) will include major characteristics and content, 'What's new?' in comparison to 2006, levels of geography, availability/delivery methods, release timeframe and pricing.

The 'Preview' will be updated periodically as details regarding products and services become finalized.

As of 8:30 a.m. (Ottawa time) on September 21, 2011, this product will be available in HTML and PDF (print-friendly) formats via the 'New products and studies' link within The Daily. Users can also access it from the census web module. From the Statistics Canada home page, click on the 'Latest census data' link under the 2011 Census header. The Preview can then be accessed either through the 'Census news' spotlight entry or through the 'Preview of Products and Services' link in the left-hand sidebar under the 2011 Census header (http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2011/ref/preview-avantgout/index-eng.cfm). Eventually, this product will be permanently stored under the upcoming 2011 Census 'Reference materials' link in the left-hand sidebar of this page.

Updated Products - PCCF+ Version 5J

Hello,

The following product is now available on the DLI FTP and website.

Postal Code Conversion File Plus (PCCF+) - version 5J

"The Postal Code Conversion File Plus (PCCF+) is a complementary product to the Postal Code Conversion File (PCCF). It is an automated system that uses postal codes to assign census geography. PCCF+ is based on the latest Postal Code Conversion File and the Postal Code Population Weight File produced by the Geography Division of Statistics Canada. PCCF+ uses weights to allocate postal codes linked to multiple dissemination areas according to the distribution of population using a given postal code." Standardize & Normalize Health Data

Question

Could you please send me the formula that Statistics Canada uses to standardize and normalize its heart attack or diabetes rates per 100,000?

Answer

The Health Statistics Division provided the following response and attachments:

Age Standardized Rates (taken from Vital Stats methodology section) Mortality rates, with the exception of crude rates, potential years of life lost (PYLL) and infant and perinatal mortality, as well as cancer incidence and certain CIHI-based data, are age-standardized using the direct method, and the 1991 Canadian Census population structure. The use of a standard population results in more meaningful rate comparisons, as it adjusts for variations in population age distributions over time and across different geographic areas.

Table 5 -  Age standardized rates

Age (in years) Standard population
Less than 1 403,061
1 to 4 1,550,285
5 to 9 1,953,045
10 to 14 1,913,115
15 to 19 1,926,090

30 to 34 2,598,289
35 to 39 2,344,872
40 to 44 2,138,891
45 to 49 1,674,153
50 to 54 1,339,902
55 to 59 1,238,441
60 to 64 1,190,217
65 to 69 1,084,588
70 to 74 834,024

85 to 89 192,410
90 and over 95,467
Source: Statistics Canada Cat. No. 84F0208XPB, Causes of Death 1997 The formula for age-standardized death rate r is:

Description
r is equal to the summation over i, for i is between 1 and 20, of w subscript i multiplied by the ratio of d subscript i by p subscript I

Where for age group i,
is the age-sex specific death count,
is the population size for a given cause of death and geographical area, and
is the weight for that group.

Note(s): that the same weight is used for each sex. To yield a rate per 100,000 population, r is multiplied by 100,000.
The confidence intervals for the age-standardized cancer incidence rates were produced using the method found in Estève et al.

For more information on the standardization of rates using the direct method, please refer to the following article found on the Association of Public Health Epidemiologists in Ontario webpage: Standardization of Rates - Namrata Bains http://www.apheo.ca/index.php?pid=193
