Field Crop Microdata

Question:
I have a researcher hoping to work with microdata from the Field Crop Reporting Series. (She’s interested specifically in the data behind this table: 32-10-0359-01 / https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/tv.action?pid=3210035901) I can’t find any indication that microdata is available for the FCRS, but thought I would check.

“The Crop Reporting Unit currently publishes data at the provincial level.  The one exception is small area data which is released once a year at the Census Agricultural Level (CAR), and can be found in table  32-10-0002.  Aside from this there is no lower level data available. I don’t believe that data is in going to be made generally available through the RDCs at this point.  That said if they have a compelling research project that supports GoC priorities, and particularly ones which might support a streamlining of STC operations we may be able to engineer a collaboration.  This is particularly the case if the research is being carried out at the University of Guelph or one of its affiliates.”  

Loss of Farmland to Urbanisation

I did some research but was not able to find any update to this research or any equivalent measurement of farmland loss to urban areas.

“The best source of this information would be the Census of Agriculture which releases at something along the lines of township level geography.  The census of course is every five years not every year.

The off farm income would be from the AgPop linkage data set if you wanted it associated with the Census of AG (available only at province level). 

Intercensal data is available from our survey programs but those produce data at much higher levels of geography.” 

Agriculture Census Restricted Microdata

Question:
I have a researcher who is wondering if it is possible to get access to restricted data from the AgCensus e.g, restricted-level geographies below CCS right to individual responses, likely through something akin to an RDC.  Is there a means to do this, or is the researcher dependent on custom tabulations?  I know that RDC’s don’t have AgCensus data, but I don’t know if there is another mechanism for this specialized product.

Subject matter has responded letting us know that the only option they would be able to provide would be in the way of a custom tab. They would need more information in order to give you a quote so please let me know if this is something your researcher would be interested in pursuing, otherwise the RDC’s might be the next best option.

I see that the Canadian Centre for Data Development and Economic Research (CDER) has access to a microdata file called “Census of Agriculture Longitudinal File”:

Census of Agriculture Longitudinal File

• Nature: Longitudinal administrative database of farms.
• Usage: The database can be used to analyze the changes that occur on farms over time.
• Content: Unlike the traditional Census of Agriculture data set, which only covers a single year, the linked file connects multiple censuses (1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011). Variables of interest include farm type, farm size, inputs, technology, products as well as economic indicators.
• Coverage period: 1986 to 2011.

CDER operates on a cost-recovery basis. Projects must be approved, and access to the files is only available on-site in Ottawa.

I find the Annual Crop Inventory to be really valuable since it’s a spatial product available over somewhat of a time series https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/ba2645d5-4458-414d-b196-6303ac06c1c9  (interesting accompaniment to the Forest Resource Inventory (FRI) which is pretty dated at this point).

Extraction System for Agricultural Statistics Replacement

Question:
Was there a replacement product for ESAS? ( Extraction System for Agricultural Statistics)

Answer:
“The Extraction System of Agricultural Statistics (ESAS), which was a CD-ROM product, was replaced by the Canadian Farm Financial Database (CFFD) in 2009. Unfortunately, this product was discontinued in 2012.

The CFFD was an easy-to-use tool which provided the means to evaluate agriculture policies and programs as well as analyze the viability, stability and competitiveness of farm businesses. This web-based product was a comprehensive and timely database of administrative and survey sources of agricultural statistics, containing thousands of cross-classified data series, spanning two decades. The database offered detailed operating revenues and expenses; sources and levels of farm and off-farm income for operators and farm families; assets, liabilities, capital investments and capital sales for farms; and information on seeded area and livestock inventories by region, type of farm and revenue class. 

The content of the database could no longer be maintained by Statistics Canada. The database was not compliant with the Government of Canada’s new accessibility and security requirements and it resided on a legacy server that was scheduled to retire. The CFFD was  removed from Statistics Canada’s website on July 31, 2012. The CFFD  was a product that served to complement CANSIM tables that were available for free on our website.

Data from the Agriculture Taxation Data Program are available in CANSIM tables (002-0024 to 002-0042 and 002-0044 to 002-0063) for years up to 2013 or 2014 depending on the series.

Data from the Farm Financial Survey are available in CANSIM tables (002-0071 to 002-0074).

With the transition to the New Dissemination Model (NDM), new table numbers have been assigned but the clients can access them with the former CANSIM tables.

Onion Production

I have a request from a researcher looking for CCS-level stats for Quebec:

I am interested in data for dry onion production in Quebec. I am interested in finding out the following:

1. farm size, type, tenure, ownership, soil type, revenues, irrigation practices/technologies
2. farm operator age, education, years of experience

3. marketed production, yields, farm gate value, production area, production regions, exports and imports, % of provincial and national GDP

She’s extracted what she can from the Census of Agriculture, but she’d like to find stats that are more recent than 2011. If necessary, she’ll consider a custom tab.

I have confirmed with subject matter regarding your questions and they have provided the following information:

The Census of Agriculture would only have as a standard data product the number of farms reporting and the total area reported for onions by CCS and a custom request for data with Leon Laborde could address some of the additional data the researcher is asking for on a cost recovery basis, but there would likely be suppression even at the provincial level.

With respect to imports/exports, this information is available free through the Canadian International Trade Database (CIMT)

Dairy Factory Production and Stocks

A researcher here would like to know if we have access to data associated with a survey relating to Dairy Factory Production and Stocks. More specifically, he is looking for the monthly production of skim milk powder (tonnes) in Ontario from July 1998 to July 2014. In CANSIM table 003-0029 most of these cells are x'ed out. He would settle on getting Yearly production numbers.

He has consulted the Data on dairy stocks in CANSIM table 003-0033 <http://www5.statcan.gc.ca/cansim/a26?lang=eng&retrLang=eng&id=0030033&paSer=&pattern=&stByVal=1&p1=1&p2=31&tabMode=dataTable&csid=>, but it doesn't have the data he's looking for.

I'm sorry to report that subject matter has confirmed that this data is suppressed for confidentiality within the CANSIM tables and is also not available through a custom tabulation.

Food Disappearance Quarterly Statistics

Question

I have a researcher who is looking for quarterly statistics on Food disappearance in Canada. The only available data we have been able to locate is annual (such as the tables linked to from this survey page: <http://www23.statcan.gc.ca/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=3475>). There are published articles, however, that do use quarterly Canadian data. One of them is:

Reynolds, A. and E. Goddard. 1991. “Structural Change in Canadian Meat Demand.” Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics 39(2):211–222.

Unfortunately, there is no specific citation of their data source other than “Meat disappearance data are obtained from Agriculture Canada and Statistics Canada.”

Is there any way of obtaining quarterly numbers?

Unfortunately, the data is not available quarterly. The only data we can provide are annual data as seen in CANSIM table 002-0010.

Irrigation Statistics

Question

I have a question from a grad student who’s looking into irrigation practices in SK. She asks: "what portion of livestock producers are irrigators and if possible how large their operations are and what they produce with respect to livestock variety. I am also interested in gaining insight into productivity, for example how much more cattle can be supported by irrigated farms over dry land farms?"

Answer

The subject matter explained that: "the Agriculture Water Survey does not collect livestock information from operations, only what type of crop is grown. Farms that irrigate for forage crops could possibly be providing this for their own use (i.e. livestock) or other operations. Table 3-1 in the 2012 Agriculture Water Use report (see attached) gives the Total area by province of irrigation by crop type."

Corn Prices in Canada

Question

Table 001-0010 on Cansim gives the average price per tonne of corn up to 1984.

What happened to the price after this date? Is there a good source for Canadian corn prices from 1985-to date?

Answer

The Agriculture Division Confirmed that we, Farm cash receipts, have corn prices starting in 1986. There are also monthly corn prices back to 1985 available through another DLI member.

The Farm cash receipts annual average price is based on corn marketed by producers within a year and does not include grain corn sold for feed from farm to farm within the same province or feed fed on the farm.

Our price may not be exactly comparable to the prices in 001-0010.

I believe the prices in 001-0010 are on an annual crop year base rather than an annual calendar year, and we think it is an average of all the crop production (including fed on farm).

The latter difference (including all feed corn) would not likely make much of a difference for corn but unfortunately we cannot compare a common year to see for sure.

We could create a file with average annual corn prices from 1986 to date in about an hour.

Insect Damage to Crops

Question

A group of researchers is looking for data (preferably Canadian) on the value of crop loss caused by pests (insects and acari) and herbivores.They are looking for the value of damage to tomato, strawberry, and grape crops (specifically by spider mites, but that might limit the available data too severely).Would StatCan’s Agricultural Division have any such data, or can anyone suggest other sources? Would this be covered under crop insurance, or available from provincial Ministries of Agriculture?

You are correct, data on crop losses is not available through our agency’s website and perhaps not even collected. We have alternative data sources that are related to the subject. The one time ‘inactive’ Crop Protection Survey, program id 5100 might be of interest to you. In the CANSIM Table 002-0005 entitled: "Farm operating expenses and depreciation charges, annual (dollars x 1,000)," you will find data on Fertilizer and lime expenses as well as Crop and hail insurance. In table 6 of catalogue number 21-023 entitled: "Farm Environmental Management Survey," you will find data on Pesticide use on Canadian crop farms by Province and region: <http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/21-023-x/2013001/t006-eng.htm>

I don’t think anyone in Ag. Div would have that type of data, what we do have is probably the closest they will find at STC. What we have in CAFS is data on ‘Direct payments’ to agricultural producers in publication 21-015 <http://www5.statcan.gc.ca/olc-cel/olc.action?ObjId=21-015-X&ObjType=2&lang=en&limit=0>. These are payments made under a variety of government programs including crop insurance, hail insurance, agri-recovery, agri-stability, etc.

These data are available annually, 2013 will be released soon. The publication contains notes explaining what each program is for. As a special request we can also provide more details on the AgriRecovery programs, this is where any government money being given for ‘disaster’ situations would be reported (attached below).

For the most part crop insurance covers only the major grains and oilseeds, though I believe some are now starting to offer coverage to horticulture growers.

We don’t have any data specific to certain crops unless there was a program specifically for one of these situations. I think this type of information is most likely to be included in an Agri-Recovery program as noted above, so I would suggest contacting someone at AAFC who is responsible for this program (which is part of Growing Forward2). Though we might have as much as they do.

1951-1971 Ag Census Questionnaires

"Gross Farm Receipts" in the Census of Agriculture 1981 & 1986

Question

I have a researcher who is doing a long term economic analysis of farming. His is looking at “Gross Farm Receipts”. These are available in Census of Agriculture excel tables, by Census Division from the 1991 census onward. He would like Gross Farm Receipts at the division and subdivision level for 1981 and 1986. They do not appear on the excel tables for these years. But he has a report published in the 1980’s which lists aggregate Gross Farm Receipts for these years. I wish to confirm if the “gross farm receipts” variable was collected at the Census division level for 1981 and 1986. If so, where might we find it. If it is was not collected, where might we find a definition for how gross farm receipts were calculated, so he might be able to calculate it from variables which were collected in 1981, and 1986.

Total Gross Farm Receipts” were collected for 1981 and 1986 and were labelled “Total Value of Agricultural Products Sold” on the flat files available to the DLI community (files: CANADA818.xls last column in the agric1981xls.zip and CAN868.xls in the agric1986xls.zip).

Cranberry Production

Question

Where could I find historical producer prices for cranberries (besides the local producers association APCQ)? The provincial producers’ groups seem the most likely source of up to date information.

I did find a couple of CANSIM tables that include cranberry production figures, but they only go back to 2008

The Agriculture Division, Horticulture Unit explained that:

"We do not collect prices in the Horticulture Unit. All the data we have are collected in the Fall Fruit and Vegetable Survey and the data can be found in CANSIM 001-0009: <http://www5.statcan.gc.ca/cansim/a26> area, production and farm gate value of fresh and processed fruits, by province, annual, 1926 to 2013.” 

I changed the date range from 1926 to 2013 and you can see that in Canada we started to produce cranberries in 1996.

Prices for Corn and Hay Used for Silage in Canada

Question

A researcher would like to find statistics on prices for both corn and hay used for silage in Canada. A Statcan rep suggested that she contact me about the availability of data from the “Tame Hay and Straw Prices Received by Producers [in] Ontario” survey which is not available through CANSIM or other standard data products. I do not see data from this survey in the DLI collection, nor listed in the RDC Master File metadata list.

The Author Divison explained that: "We don’t have any information in regards to prices of corn or hay used for silage. However, we do have some price/metric tonne data for tame hay in Ontario, Quebec and Alberta, as well as price/metric tonne data for grain corn, for various provinces. Our Price Book, includes this information, for the years 2009 to May 2014.

Farm Input Price Index

Question

I have a researcher looking for FIPI data for SK, but he’s run into a few problems I haven’t been able to solve myself. Specifically he’s looking for the following:

1. Building repair (2000 – latest) and building depreciation (1991 – latest) price indices. In CANSIM tables 328-0014 (terminated) and 328-0015 there is only one aggregate grouping for "Buildings and fencing”. It appears there’s no longer a specific price index for 'Building repair' after 2000. I also wonder if there is data related to price index of 'building depreciation'.

2. Machinery depreciation and Machinery repair price index for the 1991-2001 period.

3. Property tax. Neither he nor I can find a property tax price index for 2007 forward.

Answer

Thank you for your interest in the Farm Input Price Index (FIPI). Before responding directly to your query, let me provide a bit of context. FIPI was introduced in 1961 and it has seen many changes over the years. In the 1990s, the index was calculated using surveyed data from farm operations. After budget cuts in the 1990s, most of these surveys were phased out and the structure of the index was modified. In fact in 2008 FIPI was terminated altogether. Following this termination, there was a great deal of user feedback indicating the need for this data, but there were still no funds to conduct surveys. As a result, the current FIPI index was developed that strictly uses administrative data or data from other existing surveys. The structure of the index depended on the data that was available. Moreover, the data quality in general is very good, but there are some components for which there was no good data and we had to use the closest approximation. Only the data of good quality is published in table 328-0015. Data of weaker quality is suppressed. Indices are calculated for “building repair,” “building depreciation” and “property taxes,” but they are at a lower quality and hence are not published. Regarding “machinery depreciation and repair," these indices are currently published, but the structure of the index in the previous FIPI (CANSIM table 328-0014) didn’t include these components.

Organic Farms 2006 and 2011

Question

I have a researcher questioning some of the data produced in the 2006 and 2011 AgCensus for Organic farms and I have to admit after looking at it I'm wondering too.

2006 Data:
Total number of farms reporting organic products regardless of the certification status = 15511 - CANADA
Total number of farms producing certified organic products = 3555 - CANADA
Total number of farms producing transitional organic products = 640 - CANADA

2011 Data:
Organic products for sale (104) (Total number) = 2535 - CANADA
Certified organic products for sale (Total number) = 2383 - CANADATransitional organic products for sale (Total number) = 225 - CANADA

Note: 104. Organic products for sale. The total number of farms reporting does not equal the sum of the parts because a farm could report more than one category.

In the 2011 Data - the unit is Total Number and NOT Total Farms Reporting or Farms Reporting. Is this correct? If it is what this is telling me is that there are 2535 organic products for sale in 2011? If this is correct - then there is NO total for Farms Reporting Organic products as in 2006?

For 2011 is also number of farms reporting, although I can certainly understand where the confusion comes from.I would add that in 2006, because of the way the question was asked, there was a lot of self-identified "certified organic" farmers which does not qualify for certified because they don’t have the paper from the certifying agencies.So in 2011, we changed the question for only certified and transitional. In 2006 farm operators could include area that was organic, but uncertified. In 2011 that particular type of area was excluded.

2011 Farm Receipts

Question

I'm looking for 2011 farm receipts by individual product in Niagara (CD). On the StatCan site, the data by crop is numbers of farms/acres/hectares/head, and the farm receipts are given for categories of total gross only. Am I overlooking something, or is it available as a custom tab?

Answer

According to the Agriculture Division, we do not ask for gross farm receipts by individual products on the census questionnaire; only total gross farm receipts of the operation. FIPS explained that, the lowest level of geography produced for the Farm Cash Receipts series is at the provincial leveI--in this case for Ontario. Unfortunately, we do not have data for the Niagara region.

Farm Cash Receipts data is available by commodity. Below are links to the related Cansim Tables. The quarterly table includes data for the first three quarters of 2013. To obtain data for Ontario, click on the Add/Remove Data button and then select the required detail (province, commodity, time frame etc…)

Blueberry Harvest and Market in Greater Sudbury

Question
A researcher is looking for data on the size of the annual blueberry harvest and market in Greater Sudbury.
However, people mostly harvest wild blueberries in Sudbury - the Census of Agriculture records ZERO production in the Greater Sudbury CD because there are no farms. Also, most of the sales are roadside affairs.
I'm waiting to hear back from people at the Ontario government (OMAFRA) and the City to see if they have any way of sizing the harvest and market but I'm not getting my hopes up, since most data seems to be tied to farms.
Is there any chance that StatCan has some insight on this topic?

Answer

The fruits and vegetables is collecting data on blueberry production but we only publish at provincial level. Our data processing system isn’t outputting any data at the level of precisions, unless we make a special project.Blueberry productions around Sudbury is probably the low bush blueberry* type (but not managed as an agriculture activity). If this is the case ( “there are no farms”) than we are not collecting any blueberry sales around Sudbury. So, even if we make a special project, nothing will probably be found.

Have you considered Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. I came across the following report, however, the information is not available at the level of geography requested.
