Question:
I'm working with a student who wishes to use the microdata of Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS). The application process to get access to the data at RDC however, is a bit too long given their situation (his thesis is due to in less than 2 months); if they could use PUMFs for this survey that would be ideal, but I didn't find it on Nesstar. Did I miss anything and is there any other way for him to get his hands on the PSIS microdata?
Answer:
You may find the following table created by my colleagues helpful. It outlines which surveys have public use files, if there is a confidential file in the RDCs and if the file is available through the real time remote access (RTRA) program.
https://uottawa.libguides.com/c.php?g=401920&p=3205624
As you can see, there isn’t a PUMF for the PSIS. Likely your students best option would be a custom tabulation, but those are cost recoverable.

Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS)
Question:
The copy of the data on the EFT server for the above survey ends in 2011, but there is evidence that there is something more recent, as shown on
http://www23.statcan.gc.ca/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=5017
Having examined the available data, the researcher has the following question:
"These provide enrollments by high-level groupings of Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) codes, and what I am after are more fine grained breakdowns, potentially down to individual CIP codes. Do you know how I would go about gaining access to that finer-grained PSIS enrollment data?"

I've received the following response from subject matter:
"Normal DLI resources for PSIS would not satisfy the request below and a custom request to the CIP-6 level would be far too large to be workable in table format. I think microdata access is a must for this request. I am currently investigating possibilities that lie outside the box. Do you think that the client could qualify for and be able to access an RDC?"
I will let you know if they pass anything else along, however it looks as if the RDCs may be your best bet.

GPA or Average Final Grade in Post Secondary Institutions in Canada
Question:
I have a student who is looking for graduation by sex, by type of PS institution and GPA/Average final grade for Canada.
I’ve suggested she look at the National Graduate Survey but PSIS may be more appropriate however it doesn’t have any grading characteristics (GPA/average grade) in the public tables. Is it possible to access this information?
Answer:
Subject matter has informed us that unfortunately, PSIS contains no data related to grades or rankings and NGS has only one variable related to ranking in graduating class (top 50-25%, top 25-10%, top 10%) and nothing regarding grades. I was able to identify this variable and find it on Nesstar Webview: Variable PR_Q05: Academic ranking.

Ontario University Enrollment Numbers
Question
I have a researcher looking for enrollment numbers for each Ontario University by program for the years 2005 to 2016? Where can I find this?
Answer
Answer
I have been unable to find enrolment statistics for Ontario universities from statcan.
You do have the aggregate data from the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS), such as Table 477-0019
Postsecondary enrolments, by registration status, Pan-Canadian Standard Classification of Education (PCSCE), Classification of Instructional Programs, Primary Grouping (CIP_PG), sex and student status
http://www5.statcan.gc.ca/cansim/a05?lang=eng&id=4770019
PSIS produces a wide range of outputs that contain estimates for various student or postsecondary institution characteristics. Results are published for institutions from which we have received written consent.
I found enrolment data from the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities
https://www.ontario.ca/data/university-enrolment
There is institutional level data from the Council of Ontario Universities (CUDO) archives:
Some data elements from individual institutions are not included in the comparative database, and have been included in the CUDO Archives maintained by each Ontario university. To access historical information and data about an individual Ontario university, please click on the desired year below
http://cou.on.ca/numbers/cudo/cudo-archives/

I would guess that if there is a site with all this information, it would be the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (https://www.ontario.ca/page/ministry-advanced-education-and-skills-development): have you checked with them to see if they have this information?
Western has that information online for each year, on the Office of Institutional Planning and Budgeting site: http://www.ipb.uwo.ca/facts.php, but I don’t know if the programs would be detailed enough. Guelph has a similar page -http://www.uoguelph.ca/info/factsfigures/enrolment/ - but it doesn’t have a historic run of data. Queen’s has various Enrolment Reports (http://www.queensu.ca/registrar/sites/webpublish.queensu.ca.uregwww/files/files/EnrolRpt_2013_2014.pdf, http://www.queensu.ca/registrar/sites/webpublish.queensu.ca.uregwww/files/files/EnrolRpt_2015_2016.pdf, etc.)
In the absence of anything collated, slogging through each institution’s web page might be the only solution – reports to Senate, etc.
Answer (3)
“We do collect enrollments for each Ontario university and by institutional programs. Please note that the most recent data that we have is 2014/2015.
We could produce a custom table for the client with the chosen variables he has previously stated. Also note that these tables are custom and come at a cost.”

Education Statistics
Question
I have a graduate student looking for statistics on ethnicity/immigrant status/visible minority students in the k-12 sector – preferably elementary/secondary school students in Saskatchewan. The student is also interested in ethnic background/immigrant status breakdown for university students in Saskatchewan.
I’ve been able to find a handful of PSIS/ESIS tables on CANSIM now that it’s sort of functioning, but I expect she’s going to want more detail than these provide.
I’ve contacted the province’s Ministry of Education and several of the nearby school divisions to see if they collect such information, but have yet to get a response. Any other places I might look?
Answer
would think that she should be able to do this with the 2011 NHS PUMF? Depends on whether she needs more than “Regina-Saskatoon” vs “rest of province”, probably. If she needs more geographic detail, she could work with the master file in a RDC – I think it goes down to CSD/CT? Failing that, the 2016 PUMF is due out 2019 L
Answer 2
“Unfortunately, regarding the students in elementary/secondary school the Elementary-Secondary Education Survey (ESES) does not collect any data on ethnicity/immigrant status/visible minority. However regarding university students Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) collects data regarding the immigration status and Country of Citizenship (Country, Region and continent).
Immigration status categories
Permanent resident, formerly called landed immigrant
Student Visa: a permit obtained by a student to enter Canada for the sole purpose of attending an educational postsecondary institution
Other visa, including students who are in Canada on diplomatic, trade or other missions
Non-Canadian, status unknown (refugees and other foreign students in Canada whose status is unknown)
Non-Canadian, no visa status as student is studying outside Canada; e.g., by Internet
Not reported
Canadian students
International Students
TOTAL: Immigration Status of Student Level 03
Please find below two CANSIM table which contains the country of citizenship.
477-0031 Postsecondary enrolments, by student status, country of citizenship and sex
1999/2000 – 2014/2015
477-0032 Postsecondary graduates, by student status, country of citizenship and sex
1999 – 2014
If the client is interested in a more details tables, we can produce a custom table at a cost.”

Post-Secondary Student Information System (PSIS) International Student Data
Question
I have a request from a faculty member regarding international students enrollment (Immigration status). The PSIS data I have found at https://dli-idd.statcan.gc.ca/wds/ReportFolders/ReportFolders.aspx?IF_ActivePath=P,17351,20239&IF_Language=eng covers the time period 1993 – 2010. Is the 2011 – 2016 data available?
The researcher would like to have data that describes the number of international students who are enrolled in ESL programs in Canada.
A breakdown by province and type of school (private vs. public) would also be desirable if available.

Answer
We would like to suggest to the client to look at “Languages Canada website or contact them for that research purposes. They have private language school as well as some public institutions offering English as a second language as well as French as a second language.
We have also found some information on the ESL programs in our PSIS User guide. Please see extract below.
English as a Second Language (ESL)/English as an Additional Language (EAL)/French as a Second Language (FSL)
Most postsecondary institutions in the country have ESL, EAL or FSL activities. However, how this information is stored within each institution varies: some may include these activities as part of another program within their student registration system, while others may store this activity separately (i.e. with a distinct Program code). Alternately, information on ESL, EAL or FSL may be in a registration system that is separate from the centralized system and the information may not be available for reporting to the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) at this time.
For ESL, EAL or FSL activities that are stored separately from other educational activities and are available for reporting to PSIS, they are coded to Program type “01 – Basic education and skills programs” and coded to the Credential type that best describes the type of formal qualification awarded for successful completion of the program. Where no qualification is awarded, the program was coded to Credential type “98 – Not applicable”.

Institutional identifiers and the National Graduate Survey
Question
Does the NGS data (e.g., master file) have institutional identifiers for Canadian post-secondary institutions from which respondents received their last degree? The questionnaire seems to indicate no. If not, are there any other StatCan surveys with post-secondary institutional identifiers?
Answer
Please see Cansim Table 477-00621, 2, 5 - National graduates survey, post-secondary graduates by province of study and level of study.
Also, the Post-secondary Student Information System (PSIS) is a national survey that enables Statistics Canada to provide detailed information on enrollments and graduates of Canadian public post-secondary institutions in order to meet policy and planning needs in the field of post-secondary education.

Question
Is there a more current enrolment dataset available from the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS)? The one on the DLI ftp site only goes to 2010/2011. There is some enrolment data on CANSIM which goes to 2012/2013 – tables 477-0019 and 477-0031.
Answer
What is available on CANSIM is what is most recent. There will be a PSIS release on November 30th 2015 for the 2013-2014 data.

Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS)
Hello,
We received the following question off list about the field of study groups in the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) files the DLI receives. We are sharing it through the dlilist as it may be of interest to other DLI contacts.
Question
I just downloaded PSIS files for a professor. The fields of study are a bit broad for him. He wants to know whether there is any information on what is included under each field.
Answer
The 12 fields in the University enrolments, by province of study and by field of study, annual (number), 1992-1993 to 2008-2009 PSIS table the DLI receives are the "Special Aggregation Structure: Primary Groupings" (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/subjects-sujets/standard-norme/instruction/cip-cpe-spec2000-eng.htm). The division responsible for PSIS also referred us to the Field of Study - Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP2000) codesC which will show your client how the finer levels of the CIP are assigned to these primary groupings:
"Field of Study - Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP2000) codes
The combination of the program names, program codes and specialization or major field of study provided by the postsecondary institutions is classified using the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP2000), the official classification used at Statistics Canada for the classification of program(s) of study. The CIP taxonomy provides more than 1200 codes and is organized on three (3) levels: a 2-digit series, a 4-digit series, and a 6-digit program level. Please refer to: http://stds.statcan.gc.ca/cip-cpe/2digit-2chiffres-eng.asp

Inter-Provincial Migration - Students (Additional Question)
Question
Hi all,
This is a similar question to previously asked, but I thought I'd give it a shot to see if there might be a special publication or another source I might be missing.
I have a researcher looking for data on student mobility between the Canadian provinces in the past 10 years. She's specifically interested in students from Atlantic Canadian provinces who migrate to other Atlantic provinces for university purposes.
I'm fairly certain universities themselves have this data through their registration records, but is there anything else I can suggest?
Answer
The following Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) table may be of interest: University enrolments, by province of residence of study, annual (number), 1992/1993 to 2008/2009. It shows the province in which the student resided when they first applied to university crossed by the province they are studying in and is available on the DLI FTP or the DLI website at http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/ftp/psis-siep-eng.htm. (I asked our education contacts about this table and they indicated that it could be helpful but also mentioned that one of the variables is sometimes not well-reported, and that its use may be limited.)
Our education contacts also indicated that the National Graduates Survey (NGS) includes variables that could be used to study student mobility. The NGS was however only conducted in 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005 and the researcher would need to apply for access through a RDC or submit a request for custom (fee based) data because the variables of interest aren't on the public use microdata file. Our contacts also explained that "The NGS survey is using graduating students only (students who graduated and left the province and completed a diploma), more specifically: Among all of the graduates who lived in the Atlantic provinces before studying, who graduated in 2005, x% left the Atlantic provinces and x% did not."
I hope that this information is helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions.

Number of Students by Subject of Study Broken Down by Actual Universities in Canada
Question
I have a researcher looking for the number of students (headcount) in individual Universities in Canada (e.g. St. Mary's, Dalhousie, University of Toronto, St. FX, etc, etc.). The researcher is also looking for number of students in these Universities broken down by the faculty they are studying in (e.g. Biology, History, Medicine, etc, etc.).
If anyone knows where I can find this information, please let me know.
Thank-you,
Answer
The FTE enrolments by university figures that are in the publications on the Canadian Association of University Teachers website (see their Almanac) may be of interest to the researcher.
We have university enrolments by province in the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) tables in the DLI collection (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/ftp/psis-siep-eng.htm) and StatCan can produce university enrolments by institution as a custom tabulation. I have asked our education consultants to confirm if enrolments by field and by university are also available and will let you know as soon as this is confirmed.
Additional Information
We have a Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) table in the DLI collection that provides University enrolments, by province of study and by field of study, annual (number), 1992-1993 to 2008-2009 (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/ftp/psis-siep-eng.htm). It doesn't include data by institution however.
University enrolments by institution and by field of study can be produced on a custom basis. The minimum cost for one year of data (2008-2009) would be $150. If this is of interest to your client, I will refer you to an Account-Executive in the Western region who can provide an official quote for these custom data.
I hope that these sources and the ones suggested below are helpful.

University Enrolments
Question
I have a researcher looking for the most recent university enrolment statistics- by province as well as by institution. Is this available through the DLI?
Answer
We have university enrolment figures by province in the DLI collection through the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS). You can download the latest figures from our website (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/ftp/psis-siep-eng.htm) or through the FTP site. Tables 7 to 12 are for universities. When you open the Excel files, use the tabs at the bottom of the sheets to view all of the data. University enrolment data by institution would be available for a fee as a custom request. If this is of interest to your client, please let me know and I will be happy to refer you to an Account-Executive who can help you define the custom tables' specifications and give you an official quote. You may also wish to have a look at the publications that are available on the Canadian Association of University Teachers (http://www.caut.ca/) website under Publications and research. They may have enrolments by university in their publications.

2 Questions - Foreign Students & Outward Remittance by Immigrants
Question
I have a student looking for the number of foreign students who come to Canada but not just for college and university studies but also high school, private education etc. In addition, he asks if there are any figures on financial assistance given to these students.
The second question relates to the data on outward remittance i.e. how much money do immigrants send to other countries and which countries by amount.
I would appreciate your help in answering these questions.
Answer
Statistics on college and university enrolments by immigration status (Canadian students/International students/Not reported) are available in the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) tables that were recently added to the DLI collection (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/ftp/psis-siep-eng.htm).
Our education contacts have confirmed that they do not collect any data for foreign students at the high school level or in private schools nor do they collect data on financial assistance for foreign students. As mentioned in an off-list message, you may also wish to look into the data on foreign students by level of study that would be available from CIC.
With respect to your second question on outward remittances, your user may be interested in the publications and sources cited in the following Daily release for the 2008 study "Remittances by recent immigrants" : http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/080723/dq080723b-eng.htm (see the sources listed at the bottom of the release). If the specific information the student requires isn't included in these sources, please do not hesitate to let me know.
I hope that this information is helpful.

International Graduate Students
Question
We have a researcher looking for data sources on:"enrollment numbers of international graduate (not undergraduate) students in each province in Canada (preferably over a number of years). "
This report has some background information on the survey used to provide some output data that is available from CANSIM:
http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/080207/dq080207a-eng.htm
But the data within the CANSIM table does not provide any information on non-resident students. Perhaps some of the variables have not been included in the CANSIM table? Does anyone know of other data sources?
Would a custom table request be able to produce the information?
Answer
These data would be available as a custom tabulation from the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS). The base price for this type of tabulation is $150 with the cost increasing for additional variables and years of data.
