Cost Structure of Wood Product Manufacturing

Question
We received request from one of our client asking for cost structure of the Wood Product Manufacturing at a more detailed level.

Currently the StatCan website provides 3 digit level (321) but the client is requesting information at 6 digit level (321999) at  NAICS. The related table is CANSIM Table 3830032.

Could you  please  confirm if detailed 6 digit level information is available?

Answer
We have received the following response from subject matter regarding your request:

“The KLEMS data, which is what client is referencing, is not available at the 6 digit level. The finest degree of detail in KLEMS is a combination of 4 digit NAICS with a number of special aggregations.  There is a wood products manufacturing industry (3120) where we have the MFP decomposition.  In terms of releasing it, we just need to verify that there are no confidentiality concerns.  If the client wants a finer level of detail than that, it would likely have to come from the Input-Output accounts or from the ASM.

Just one other thing to note, the client requested cost structure information.  In KLEMS we only have energy, materials and services as categories.  If the client wants more specific detail, they would need to contact one of the other divisions.”

Canadian Health Measures Survey

Question
I have a researcher who is looking to possibly use the Canadian Health Measures Survey and is looking for information on what components data is collected for.

Here is the question:
I am trying to determine if I could potentially use the Canadian Health Measures Survey for an upcoming study. I know they collect biological samples (blood, urine etc.) and I was just wondering if there is a list of which components they collected data for (e.g. creatinine, arsenic).

Does such a list exist and is it publicly available? If not, is there someone she could contact to get this information?

Answer
Here is the response from Subject Matter, along with the corresponding attachment:

“I’m attaching the CHMS Content Summary for Cycles 1-8. Please share this with the researcher:

There are no data files available to researchers through the DLI. Access is available however to approved research studies through the RDCs. Here’s a link to the program:
http://www.statcan.gc.ca/eng/rdc/index. Custom tabulations are also available on a cost recovery basis.”

Canadian Coroners and Medical Examiners Database

For anyone interested in the accessing the Canadian Coroners and Medical Examiners Database:

“The CCMED began collecting information for deaths having occurred in 2006, however, only the data up to and including the 2010 reference year were released. Comprehensive data for all provinces and territories are not available: Manitoba and Newfoundland and Labrador have yet to provide data, and data for other provinces and territories are unavailable for some years and/or some data elements. The project lost a lot of momentum with the expiration of the data sharing agreements with the provinces and territories. The opioid crisis has renewed interest in the CCMED and most provinces and territories have signed the new agreement. We are hoping to reconvene the steering committee shortly and start looking at how we can improve the quality, coherence and timeliness of the data received across the jurisdictions. With the exception of the Public Health Agency of Canada, the CCMED microdata are not available to researchers external Statistics Canada.”

DA suppression list for 2001? EA suppression lists?

Question 1Does anyone know if there is a list of DAs from which data was suppressed or unavailable in 2001? Are there similar lists for enumeration areas for other years (1991, 1996)? If they are on the EFT, where are they all hiding? J

A student is doing historical research with census data, and she found a few DAs for which we can't find any data through the archived census profile on the EFT or from other products that share census data such as the Census Analyser. Sometimes with historical research the students fail to realize that the boundaries have changed, which requires the help of the correspondence files, but these DAs definitely exist in 2001 as shown in boundary files or reference maps.

For example, DA 12090310 is located right in Halifax. But we can't find any data on it! In the 2001 Beyond 20/20 profiles, we jump straight from 12090309 to 12090311. So where can we find some sort of explanation about why data wasn't released for that DA and other DAs, preferably with lists of suppressed DAs for 2001 and EAs for older years?

Question 2
In some cases, only some subsets of data are available for select DAs. For example, in 2006, 12090292 has the total number of census families and many other (but not all) variables, but age counts (?!) seem to be unavailable. The student would love some sort of explanation that she can quote in her thesis. When looking at the notes for the profile in Beyond 20/20, only the criteria for suppressing data about income is explained.

Answer
We have received the following response from subject matter regarding your questions:

“Unfortunately, the DA suppression list is nowhere on our website…we do have the CSD suppression list in the notes for the data quality and confidentiality of the community profiles. I compiled a list of suppressed DAs (approximately 8,909 DAs) in a spreadsheet for you (please see attached spreadsheet). This suppression list is not very accessible for previous Censuses.

To answer your questions: In your example below (question 1) of DA 12090310, this DA in Halifax is suppressed. You can see from Geosuite 2001 that this DA does not meet the population threshold for the data quality and confidentiality rules.

For question 2, the specific DA 12090292 is not suppressed for 100% data but it is suppressed for 20% data (the non-response rate for the 20% was over or equal to 25%). You can find an explanation in the Beyond 20/20 notes in the data quality flag section.

For example, in the Beyond 20/20 file in the geography row you will see the following type of description for a particular DA. There is a 5 digit code containing the data quality flags which indicate whether suppression at the data quality level has been applied. See example below with the description of the DQ flags:

2006 Census – Data quality flags and descriptions
Data quality flags for place of residence

Digit Description
1st (0XXXX) Incomplete enumeration flag
2nd (X0XXX) 100% data quality flag
3rd (XX0XX) Population and dwelling counts error flag
4th (XXX0X) 20% sample data quality flag
5th (XXXX0) 2001 adjusted population flag

Flag description
Incomplete enumeration flag
0 = Default.
1 = Incompletely enumerated Indian reserve or Indian settlement (suppressed).
2 = Excludes census data for one or more incompletely enumerated Indian reserves or Indian settlements.

100% data quality flag
0 = Default.
1 = Data quality index showing, for the short census questionnaire (100% data), a global non-response rate higher than or equal to 5% but lower than 10%.
2 = Data quality index showing, for the short census questionnaire (100% data), a global non-response rate higher than or equal to 10% but lower than 25%.
3 = Data quality index showing, for the short census questionnaire (100% data), a global non-response rate higher than or equal to 25% (suppressed).

Population and dwelling counts error flag
0 = Default.
1 = An error exists in the 2006 population and dwelling counts for this area. For further details, please refer to the population and dwelling counts data section of the 'Notes' file.
2 = In 2001, the population and/or dwelling counts for this census subdivision were found to be incorrect. Since it is not possible to make changes to the 2001 Census data presented in these tables, the 2001 data should be used with caution. For further details, please refer to the population and dwelling counts data section of the 'Notes' file.
3 = Both the 2006 and 2001 population and/or dwelling counts for this area were found to be incorrect. Since it is not possible to make changes to the census data presented in these tables, these counts should be used with caution. For further details, please refer to the population and dwelling counts data section of the 'Notes' file.

20% sample data quality flag
0 = Default.
1 = Data quality index showing, for the long census questionnaire (20% sample data), a global non-response rate higher than or equal to 5% but lower than 10%.
2 = Data quality index showing, for the long census questionnaire (20% sample data), a global non-response rate higher than or equal to 10% but lower than 25%.
3 = Data quality index showing, for the long census questionnaire (20% sample data) or the short census questionnaire (100% data), a global non-response rate higher than or equal to 25% (suppressed).

2001 adjusted population flag
0 = Default.
1 = 2001 adjusted count; most of these are the result of boundary changes.

Note:
1. The 100% and 20% sample data quality flags do not apply to the population and dwelling counts.

Data quality flag for place of work

Digit Description
4th (XXX0X) 20% sample data quality flag

Flag description
20% sample data quality flag
3 = Data quality index showing, for the long census questionnaire (20% sample data) or the short census questionnaire (100% data), a global non-response rate higher than or equal to 25% (suppressed).

Labour Force Survey (LFS) – March 2017

Labour Force Survey (LFS) – March 2017
LFS data for March 2017 are now available on the EFT site.

This public use microdata file contains non-aggregated data for a wide variety of variables collected from the Labour Force Survey (LFS). The LFS collects monthly information on the labour market activities of Canada's working age population. This product is for users who prefer to do their own analysis by focusing on specific subgroups in the population or by cross-classifying variables that are not in our catalogued products

The Labour Force Survey estimates are based on a sample, and are therefore subject to sampling variability. Estimates for smaller geographic areas, industries, occupations or cross tabulations will have more variability. For an explanation of sampling variability of estimates, and how to use standard errors to assess this variability, consult the Data Quality section in the Guide to the Labour Force Survey.

GDP for Agricultural Industries

QuestionA student is looking for data similar to that found in CANSIM 379-0028 for industries under NAICS code 11 (Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting) but at greater detail. The above table goes to 3 and sometimes 4-digit NAICS codes, but she's wondering if even more detail is available somewhere. Any suggestions?

Answer"The data found in CANSIM table 379-0028 is not available at the national level. With that said, it is possible to calculate a national percentage share by multiplying the provincial shares found in CANSIM table 379-0028 by the provincial GDP found in CANSIM table 384-0037 and deriving a national share by adding together all the provincial values and dividing by the GDP for Canada."

Aboriginal Businesses

Question
I have a doctoral student who’s trying to identify barriers to new on-reserve business ventures.

At the moment he needs information about the number of on-reserve businesses for each First Nation in SK. If he can get more than that, number of employees, business size , ownership structure, industry/sector, great, but not a deal breaker.

Given past experience with finding information about on-reserve activities, I’m not optimistic, but thought I’d see if anyone has any suggestions.

I’ve contacted a number of SK tribal councils to see if (a.) they keep such stats and, (b.) they’d be willing to share them for research purposes. As yet, I haven’t heard from any of them.

Answer

The First Nations Information Governance Centre’s First Nations Regional Early Childhood, Education and Employment Survey (FNREEES) may have what your student is looking for. They survey on-reserve populations exclusively.

You can e-mail them at fndc@fnigc.c

Answer 2
How about contacting the First Nations Information Governance Centre. They are actually giving a presentation this morning at Carleton U.

You can get more info here: http://fnigc.ca/

Answer 3
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I’ve tried a couple of division and unfortunately it looks like there is no collection of aboriginal businesses operating on reserves at Statistics Canada. Sylvie Lafortune did suggest contact the First Nations Information Governance Centre.

Ontario University Enrollment Numbers

Question
I have a researcher looking for enrollment numbers for each Ontario University by program for the years 2005 to 2016? Where can I find this?

Answer
I have been unable to find enrolment statistics for Ontario universities from statcan.

You do have the aggregate data from the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS), such as Table 477-0019

Postsecondary enrolments, by registration status, Pan-Canadian Standard Classification of Education (PCSCE), Classification of Instructional Programs, Primary Grouping (CIP_PG), sex and student status

http://www5.statcan.gc.ca/cansim/a05?lang=eng&id=4770019

PSIS produces a wide range of outputs that contain estimates for various student or postsecondary institution characteristics. Results are published for institutions from which we have received written consent.

I found enrolment data from the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities

https://www.ontario.ca/data/university-enrolment

There is institutional level data from the Council of Ontario Universities (CUDO) archives:

Some data elements from individual institutions are not included in the comparative database, and have been included in the CUDO Archives maintained by each Ontario university. To access historical information and data about an individual Ontario university, please click on the desired year below

http://cou.on.ca/numbers/cudo/cudo-archives/

Aggregated enrolment by CUDO
Enrolment
http://cou.on.ca/numbers/multi-year-data/enrolment/

Answer (2)
I would guess that if there is a site with all this information, it would be the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (https://www.ontario.ca/page/ministry-advanced-education-and-skills-development): have you checked with them to see if they have this information?

Western has that information online for each year, on the Office of Institutional Planning and Budgeting site: http://www.ipb.uwo.ca/facts.php, but I don’t know if the programs would be detailed enough. Guelph has a similar page -http://www.uoguelph.ca/info/factsfigures/enrolment/ - but it doesn’t have a historic run of data. Queen’s has various Enrolment Reports (http://www.queensu.ca/registrar/sites/webpublish.queensu.ca.uregwww/files/files/EnrolRpt_2013_2014.pdf, http://www.queensu.ca/registrar/sites/webpublish.queensu.ca.uregwww/files/files/EnrolRpt_2015_2016.pdf, etc.)

In the absence of anything collated, slogging through each institution’s web page might be the only solution – reports to Senate, etc.

Answer (3)
“We do collect enrollments for each Ontario university and by institutional programs. Please note that the most recent data that we have is 2014/2015.

We could produce a custom table for the client with the chosen variables he has previously stated. Also note that these tables are custom and come at a cost.”

Population counts for 2016 by FSA

Question
I was looking for population counts by forward sortation area for the 2016 census. I went to http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2016/dp-pd/hlt-fst/pd-pl/comprehensive.cfm, and to http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2016/dp-pd/hlt-fst/pd-pl/index-eng.cfm and didn’t find that level. Have I missed something, or are those releases pending? I was hoping to be able to estimate the number of people living in Canada served by rural postal codes.

Answer
The FSA Geography is tentatively scheduled to be released prior to Release 3 (02 August 2007). Please note that this date is subject to change.
