A student at M.Sc in Operations and logistics is searching for data on freight flows (volumes of consumers, industrial, material goods).
He’s starting point is the Port of Montreal. He’s looking for any data on where all those goods go, which mode of transportation is used and what is their final destination.
I have sent the information from the Port of Montreal, but it’s incomplete as to the origin of the products and where they are going.
I’ve found the table 23-10-0216-01, but it doesn’t offer the port of origin. I’ve also found the Canadian Freight Analysis Framework.
I’ve sent all these resources, but for my students, it’s incomplete.
Would you have any suggestions I might refer him to?

I apologize for the delay – I had a meeting with the individual responsible for creating the data files for very similar subjects in the past, and he is extremely excited about the prospect of someone looking for more!
Unfortunately what IS available wouldn’t be publicly accessible… Only accessible via the RDCs. In saying that however, the data is not currently IN the RDCs (it would need to be completed before-hand). This isn’t necessarily the answer I’m sure your student is looking for, however I’ve been given a few different resources that will hopefully help some:
For starters, please check out the following NATS website: http://nats.sct.gob.mx/language/en/ (the Data Tables section offers quite a lot!)
I was given the table 6-3a to pass along that might be useful as well (see attached). This was not accessible for me via the website, but hopefully the student has better luck.
Finally, I am attaching the 2011 Marine Origin and Destination tables (Domestic and International). There is MORE information than just Montreal in these documents, and although they are a little outdated, hopefully they will be of some use.
At this point in time there isn’t much else that we could help with, however the team responsible for creating these resources are very motivated to develop new data and would love feedback if the student had any interest!

CansimT#s 079-0003/079-0004
Question:
Instead of BC and the Territories lumped together in CansimT#s 079-0003/079-0004, could i/we have just BC and combine the Territories? To not have BC separate, as Canada’s 3rd most populous province, is highly unusual.

A while back the Territories did not have the economy to support major dealership networks and most automobiles were purchased from either BC or Alberta. Today there are some dealerships in the territories and their values are very small and would be confidential. This would then mean we would have to suppress a larger province to hide the confidential units. We combine BC with the territories as most of the sales came from BC when there were fewer dealers in the Territories.
Other major Canadian automotive data sources outside of Statistics Canada also combine sales of vehicles from the territories in the provinces.

Is it possible to obtain data on deaths from motor vehicle accidents by urban/ rural?

Place of Work Statistics
Question
I have a question from a team of graduate students and faculty member. These patrons are looking to do some modelling based on place of work information (DA level); however, rather than household-based statistics, they're hoping for something which is industry-based. That is, they do not want to know how many people who live in DA1 work in retail vs. manufacturing occupations, but what the concentration of retail companies or manufacturing companies is in DA1 (for example). Similarly, they don't care how many residents of DA2 take the bus to work, but are interested in how many people who work in DA2 took the bus to get there.
I have explained to them that the Census is household based, but they wanted to know if anyone might know of another way of obtaining information about DAs from the perspective of businesses (up to and including custom files). In fact, I think they want to try to link to link DAs if they can (ie, connect commuters from their home DAs to their work DAs). As you can see from the list of variables they require, about half of them are easily answered by the profile series. Alas it is the latter half which is problematic (at least as the team would like it).

Generate Map (or Stats) on Students' Transit Access Using Postal Codes
Question
A Student Association is trying to determine how many students do not have convenient access to transit, which it defines as being more than a 15-minute walk from a transit station or bus stop. It is in negotiations with the local transit company about a proposed student transit pass. I have a couple of questions:
Would the Student Association be eligible to use DLI resources for this purpose (assuming they will be of help)? I suspect not since it is a separate organization from the university. This issue is of interest to the university’s planning office as well, however, and it has provided the Student Association with a list of the number of students living in each 6-digit postal code.
Could any of you with GIS experience suggest how to best approach this, with or without DLI resources? Unfortunately, our Library does not subscribe to DMTI Spatial’s Platinum Postal Suite (or any DMTI products), nor do we have PCensus. We do have ArcGIS installed on some workstations.
I’m afraid that I have very little experience – aside from some excellent DLI training sessions and the National Summer Institute last year – on using mapping software. I have spent a bit of time thinking about various approaches I might recommend to the Student Association with the limited resources we have available, and could probably spend all day bumbling around trying them out. I actually wouldn’t mind this, in order to get some experience using the tools, but the Student Association needs the info fairly urgently.
The transit company provides PDF route maps on its website and has also made route data available in Google Transit Feed Specification (GTSF) format. The Student Association has generated a PDF map showing its rough boundaries of ‘convenient access.’
Any help will be appreciated.

Here is how I would basically approach this request.
The first step would be to geocode the student list using their postal codes. Using the PCCF (if use allowed) you would assign each student latitude and longitude coordinates based on the postal code they live at. You would then add these students as x/y points to the map.
The second step would be to obtain a point shapefile of all the bus stops and SkyTrain stations. I had a quick look at the Google Transit Feed Specification and I think this could probably be created from one of the files if you don't have access to the actual shapefile from TransLink.
The third step would be to create buffers around each bus stop and SkyTrain station using some distance that would approximate a 15-minute walk (500-1000 meters).
The fourth step would be to select by location all the students that fall outside those buffers. This would give you the number of students without convenient access to transit.
Additional information
We consulted the DLI Executive and they confirmed that the Student Association and/or the university's planning office would be allowed to use DLI products (such as the PCCF) for this specific project. As students and staff, they are authorised users and this project can be considered academic planning and is therefore allowed according to the DLI licence. The students would of course need to be made aware of the licence and its restrictions (e.g. the DLI products can't be used by the transit company).

Commuting Flows
Question
All those previously requesting the "Commuting Flows" data have been
using it for years, and just wanted the files. However, I now have a
student who is hoping that I will explain its structure to her. So, I
am hoping to have your indulgence for my ignorance and explain it to me
-- so that I can explain it to her! Is there a user guide for these
files?
In the file for Ontario, for example (97561xcb2006008_ont.ivt) :
First line:

I assume that the first line means that for all of Canada, 5,134,485
people commute TO or WITHIN Ontario, and that the last line means that
some number of males, between 1 and 10 in the hamlet of Arviat in
Nunavut commute to Ottawa. Is that correct?
The table title leads me to the conclusion that the 7-digit codes are
CSD codes. But I am puzzled by the 5-digit codes just before the / --
going from 20000 to 00000: what do they represent?
Also, given the large distances of some of these combinations, how is
"commuting" interpreted?
As I indicated initially, if there is a description somewhere that I
should be reading, to get these answers, point me to it.

Rounding is a mathematical operation that can increase a number, decrease a number or leave it unchanged; only certain predetermined values are permitted. For example, we could decide in advance to round figures to the nearest multiple of 10, the next highest multiple of 10, or the next lowest multiple of 10. So, if we round 10, 13 and 17 to the next lowest multiple of 10, the result would be 10 in all three cases.
The random rounding method is based on established probabilities. It involves rounding every figure in a table (including the totals) randomly up or down to the nearest multiple of 5, or, in some cases, 10. For instance, random rounding of 12 to a multiple of 5 would yield either 10 or 15; applying the same operation to 10 would produce 10. This technique provides strong protection against direct, residual or negative disclosure, without adding significant error to the census data.
So your understanding of the random rounding is correct.

1) It appears that the 5-digit codes following (20000 after Canada and 00000 after Arviat) are data quality flags. These flags are described in detail in Beyond 20/20 if you right click on the geography variable and select the "i" icon (but please note that I don't have access to my FTP this week so I am relying on memory).
In terms of the structure, the first column is the place of residence, and the second (after the slash) is the place of work.
Please note that we are on the road this week, so I can't answer this question as completely as I'd like. I will try to find some documentation regarding commuting flows and the rounding as soon as we can.

Data on driving, or car ownership and recycling or energy saving programs
Question
This request for help came while I was at ACCOLEDS.I wonder if anyone has any ideas of StatCan sources that might be helpful for the Grad Student. (The student’s paper is due imminently.)
My thesis is the following: Is there a relationship between environmentally harmful behaviours (e.g. driving) and participation in energy savings programs? In other words, I am asking the question: Do people feel guilty for driving or other polluting activities and try to do something to make up for it?
Instead of energy saving programs, this could be replaced by "recycling programs." There is some helpful information in the SDA tool which I am comfortable with. I am trying to determine if there may be any other studies by Stats Can on areas relating driving, car ownership, recycling programs, or energy saving programs (energy audits), etc.

With respect to my previous email, I expect the student is using the Households and the Environments Survey and I have sent him the link to the publication # 16-201-X Human Activity and the Environment: Annual Statistics. This publication lists a number of related surveys and publications.

Vehicle Kilometres Question

I am dealing with another research request for motor vehicle information, this time for recent vehicle-kilometres data. There is a table showing estimates by province in the Canadian Vehicle Survey: Annual, 53-223-X.
The researcher is looking for estimates of vehicle-kilometres driven in three major metropolitan areas, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Is there any hope or possibility of getting something at this level?

Updated products - Road Network File (RNF)
Road Network File, 2007
The 2007 Road Network File (RNF) (92-500-XWE2007001) is now available. The Road Network File (RNF) is a digital representation of Canada's national road network, containing information such as street names, types, direction and address ranges. The information comes from the National Geographic Database (NGD).
A reference guide is also included.
The 2007 Road Network File does not replace the 2006 Road Network File, which is a similar product available as part of the 2006 suite of Geography products, and used in conjunction with products and services from the 2006 Census.

Road Statistics
Question
A student here is looking for data on the % paved roads, automobile density and mean miles driven annually for:
Quebec City, 1989
City of Edmonton, 1989
Two years ago, Joel Rivard described how to use DMTI data in ArcView to get the road lengths for Ontario; what the student wants is paved roads, and for the above cities. I suspect she'd be happy with even just the overall road length.
Any ideas? I realize getting data for these exact years is likely to be problematic, to say the least, so whatever can be obtained would be appreciated.

I contacted our Geography Division to see if they had the information your student needs and they confirmed that they do not. They did however provide the following suggestions:
"Contact the respective province and their Ministry of Transportation, they should have the percentage of paved roads and arc lengths. We do not collect such attribute information.

A student here is looking for data on the % paved roads, automobile density and mean miles driven annually for:
Quebec City, 1989
City of Edmonton, 1989
Two years ago, Joel Rivard described how to use DMTI data in ArcView to get the road lengths for Ontario; what the student wants is paved roads, and for the above cities. I suspect she'd be happy with even just the overall road length.
Any ideas? I realize getting data for these exact years is likely to be problematic, to say the least, so whatever can be obtained would be appreciated.

Block-Face Data Files

Our specialist in urban transportation has always used the ASCII Block-face Data Files in preparing his files for his research projects. He is now asking about Census 2001.

2005 Road Network File (92-500-XWE).
The 2006 Census Dissemination Project is pleased to announce the official release of the 2005 Road Network File (92-500-XWE).
The 2005 Road Network File (RNF) is the first official release from the 2006 Census Geography suite of products and services. The RNF is a digital representation of Canada's national road network, containing information such as street names, type, direction and address ranges.
The unrestricted release of the RNF allows Canadians to preview the national road network which is the source for the creation of geographic units being used for 2006 Census of population. Other applications of this file include: mapping, geocoding, geographic search, area delineation, and database maintenance as a source for street names and locations.
The 2005 Road Network File (RNF) is available for Canada and individual provinces and territories in three formats: ArcINFO (.SHP), MapInfo (.TAB), and, for the first time, Geography Markup Language (.GML).
For the first time, the RNF is available free of charge to Canadians on the Internet and can be found by clicking on the "2006 Census" button located on the top navigation bar of the Statistics Canada home page and can be accessed under the "2006 Census." Average Air Transportation Costs
Question
The student is looking for average air transportation costs (domestic) in Canada going back to 1990, and ideally monthly data. I checked the household spending survey and it wasn't there (that I could find), and I checked some other things, and the closest we could come was in CPI, but that was an index and he would prefer $

Unfortunately, you are correct, the only thing that I found of interest in STC data was the Consumer Price Index's air transportation portion.
I did however perform a little more research, and I found an article related to JetsGo's bankruptcy and the Globe and Mail makes reference to Desjardins Securities publication "Airfare Pulse" which was used to compare fares over time.

A faculty member is looking for data from the Canadian Civil Aviation - Annual Report, which is described here:

This survey does not seem to be available through the DLI. I have also searched the DLI List archives and found no mention of it. There is a publication available for download but this does not meet his needs because he is looking for actual data.
Could someone please confirm whether or not this is available through the DLI, or whether it will be available at some point in the future? And if not, how the professor can get his hands on it?
