Hello,
We received the following question off list about the field of study groups in the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) files the DLI receives. We are sharing it through the dlilist as it may be of interest to other DLI contacts.
Question
I just downloaded PSIS files for a professor. The fields of study are a bit broad for him. He wants to know whether there is any information on what is included under each field.
Answer
The 12 fields in the University enrolments, by province of study and by field of study, annual (number), 1992-1993 to 2008-2009 PSIS table the DLI receives are the "Special Aggregation Structure: Primary Groupings" (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/subjects-sujets/standard-norme/instruction/cip-cpe-spec2000-eng.htm). The division responsible for PSIS also referred us to the Field of Study - Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP2000) codesC which will show your client how the finer levels of the CIP are assigned to these primary groupings:
"Field of Study - Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP2000) codes
The combination of the program names, program codes and specialization or major field of study provided by the postsecondary institutions is classified using the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP2000), the official classification used at Statistics Canada for the classification of program(s) of study. The CIP taxonomy provides more than 1200 codes and is organized on three (3) levels: a 2-digit series, a 4-digit series, and a 6-digit program level.
