Workplace and Employee Survey (WES) - Custom Tab Request

Question:
I am helping a researcher interested in using the employee version of the (WES) to explore “within-organization discrimination against parents who take maternity/paternity leave”, “does leave results in discrimination?” and “is the person in a leadership position” (this last question seems hardest to answer). I discovered the WES pdf reports on archived Stat Can pages and saw the synthetic files on . I am wondering if any additional tables exist? Would this be something that could be requested via a custom tab?

For the time being, I will be recommending exploration (and sub setting) of the GSS and LFS.

Answer:
In regards to the WES, the data is solely available through the RDC - custom tabulations aren’t possible.

Cannabis Waste Statistics

Question:
A student is doing some research on cannabis waste from licensed producers in Canada and is looking for current statistics on the quantities of waste being generated at all licensed producer facilities in Canada.

The student contacted STC and was told that “The data you are requesting is not available on our website as a standard product” with the suggestion to contact the DlI contact.

The national Cannabis Tracking System (CTS) seems to account for waste so we are wondering if it might be something that could be obtained via custom tab from StatsCan…or would we have to contact Health Canada directly?

Answer:
We were passed along the following response from subject matter:

The data we’re collecting on a monthly basis is from municipal wastewater treatment plants (15 of them) in five cities (Vancouver, Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto, Halifax). The plants treat water from all sources: residential, commercial, and industrial. With respect to cannabis, we are analyzing wastewater samples (at the entry of the wastewater treatment plant) for cannabis metabolites. In other words, we are only looking at cannabis once it has been consumed by a person, since the intent is to measure cannabis consumption. In particular, we focused on the metabolite since we did not want to have consumption numbers “contaminated” by raw cannabis or unused product that was disposed of in the sewer system.

This data is being collected directly by Statistics Canada, with the assistance of participating cities and a laboratory. As of now, data are not being made available at the wastewater treatment plant level.

Historical data on cigarette consumption

Question:
I have a researcher looking for data on cigarette consumption in Canada from 1900-1965. Would prefer individual consumption but sales number would also work if that’s all that’s available.

We’ve already found some information in the Canada year book series, but does anyone have ideas of elsewhere this information might be?

Answer from DLI:
I came across this source:

Forey, B., Hamling, J., Hamling J., Thornton, A., & Lee, P. (2006, rev. 2012). Canada. International smoking statistics: A collection of worldwide historical data (Web ed.). Retrieved from http://www.pnlee.co.uk/Downloads/ISS/ISS-Canada_120111.pdf

·         see tables 1 and 2 which have stats from 1924 - 2010

·         seems extremely authoritative and well-documented

Not sure about earlier years.

Answer from Subject Matter:
CTADS seems to have relevant information, however the reference periods only date back to the year 2000. SHS also seems to have relevant information, however, the reference periods only date back to the year 1999. I inquired with the subject matter areas responsible and received the following responses:

“Unfortunately, none of the surveys we have conducted go back that far… I took a look at Health Canada’s site as I thought that perhaps CADUMS would have a few more years of data but I couldn’t find anything that would clearly support this researcher’s endeavours.  I would suggest that the researcher contact HC to see if perhaps they have data more readily available.  The contact listed on the CADUMS site is:

For more information about the survey and its results, please write to the Office of Drugs and Alcohol Research and Surveillance, Controlled Substances and Tobacco Directorate, Health Canada, 150 Tunney's Pasture Driveway, Address Locator 0301A, Ottawa, ON, K1A 0K9, or send an e-mail request to CADUMS-ESCCAD@hc-sc.gc.ca.”

And

“Regrettably I have no recommendation - the SHS is limited in its timeframe scope such that it doesn’t touch upon 1900-1965; and as far as I am aware, the only available information in this regarding is sourced from the Canadian Year Book Series.”

We also received the following recommendation:

“Would CAT 11-512 be more detailed than the Canada Year Book?

Coffee Consumption in Canada

Question

I have a researcher looking for any data or statistics on coffee consumption behaviour in Canada. Specifically it would be most helpful if he could break it down by urban vs. rural populations. Does anyone know of a survey that specifically includes coffee consumption in Canada? Or would I have to move from Stats Can into business/market research?

Answer

In the past it required moving into business/market research.

I have, however, found, reference to the following study from the Canadian Community of Health Survey:

"Among people 50 and older, coffee was the most common beverage choice after water. About three-quarters of men and women drink coffee on any given day. As a result, more than 20% of men and 15% of women aged 31 to 70 exceeded the recommended maximum of 400 milligrams of caffeine per day."

Media Use in Classrooms

Question

I spoke with someone from StatsCan and they suggested that I contact you directly. We are conducting a study on the use of MEDIA (Audio Visual, Internet etc) in classrooms (i.e primary, secondary and post-secondary). We would like to retrieve information on the number of teachers in Canada (per province if possible), that have access to some form of media technology (i.e.
projectors, LCDs, etc..) The person from StatsCan suggested that you contact the Education Department from StatsCan and ask them for this information directly.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer

Our education contacts have confirmed that the most recent data they have on this topic is published in "Computers in the classroom: Opportunity and challenge" in Education matters. September 2004. Number 3. (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/81-004-x/200409/7017-eng.htm). They indicated that this publication is based on data from the 2003-2004 Information and Communications Technologies in Schools Survey (ICTSS).

Montreal Employment Data

Question

“I was recommended to speak to you regarding data on Montreal's cultural employment. I was hoping to find a precise breakdown of arts workers, such as dancers, film makers, etc. rather than the broad category of "arts, culture, and recreation". I have been looking at some American sources for inspiration, and they seem to have a very detailed breakdown of workers by city, does such thing exist in Canada? I was hoping to make some tables of "locational quotients" of arts jobs in Montreal, and whether or not they were concentrated in the city. Do you think chass would be helpful? Or perhaps some microdata may have this information? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.”

In response to the message above, I found for Census 2001, the SIT #97f0012xcb01053 which uses the 2001 National Occupational Classification for Statistics and provides fairly detailed counts for the occupational categories of interest in Category F03 Creative and Performing Arts.  It gives separate figures for dancers, musicians, visual artists, etc.

In the Special Interest Tables for 2006, the closest table seems to be #97-564-xcb2006006.   But in this table, the NAICS is used and the categories are much more lumped, as the table is cross-categorized with much more detailed demographic information.

Would there be an existing table using the 2006 Census data with the 2001 National Occupational Classification for Statistics?  Or some other source for obtaining that level of detailed employment data for the cultural sector?

Answer

The following topic-based tabulations include data for Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations and include a detailed breakdown by NOCS:

  • Occupation - National Occupational Classification for Statistics 2006 (720), Class of Worker (6) and Sex (3) for the Labour Force 15 Years and Over of Canada, Provinces, Territories, Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations, 2006 Census - 20% Sample Data 97-559-X2006011

  • Employment Income Statistics (4) in Constant (2005) Dollars, Work Activity in the Reference Year (3), Occupation - National Occupational Classification for Statistics 2006 (720A) and Sex (3) for the Population 15 Years and Over With Employment Income of Canada, Provinces, Territories, Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations, 2000 and 2005 - 20% Sample Data 97-563-X2006063

  • Occupation - National Occupational Classification for Statistics 2006 (720C), Sex (3) and Selected Demographic, Cultural, Labour Force, Educational and Income Characteristics (273) for the Population 15 Years and Over of Canada, Provinces, Territories, Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations, 2006 Census - 20% Sample Data 97-564-X2006005

The following table may also be of interest to your client:

  • Occupation - Standard Occupational Classification 1991 (Historical) (707), Age Groups (12A) and Sex (3) for the Labour Force 15 Years and Over of Canada, Provinces, Territories, Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations, 1996 to 2006 Censuses - 20% Sample Data  97-559-X2006012

You can access these tables through the 2006 census module at  http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/english/census06/data/topics/ListProducts.cfm?Temporal=2006&APATH=3&THEME=74&FREE=0&SUB=743&GRP=1

Music Grads and Employment

Question

Can the DLI resources answer the following question: "the number of music majors who get jobs when they graduate?"

Answer

This may be available as a custom extraction (for a fee) from the National graduates Survey (NGS). The variables in the NGS survey PUMFs unfortunately wouldn't allow you to answer the question as the industry and instructional program groupings are too large. Visual and performing arts, and communications technologies instructional programs seem to be grouped together as are Occupations in art, culture, recreation and sport.

The music department at UVic or an industry association may have statistics on this subject. Other DLI Contacts may have some helpful suggestions for your as well.

Stats on Musicians

Question

I have a student looking for the number of independent Canadian musicians who have released a CD in the last 10 years or so. She is looking for numbers of people who are not with a major record label, but essentially have created the CD on their own and may or may not have deposited the CD with Library and Archives Canada.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Answer

This is the answer we got from the author division concerning your questions on Stats on musicians:

“Unfortunately we do not measure specific data related to the number of releases from "independent" Canadian musicians vs. those represented by a major label - we don't survey Canadian musicians specifically. Our industry based survey collects financial and characteristic data from companies classified as record producers, music publishers, sound recording studios and the likes.

Although we don't have the exact information requested below, I have attached a copy of our most recent data release (ry2007) in case there is some other information that may be beneficial to your contact. We have data regarding the number of releases by Canadian vs.non-Canadian artists as well as number of releases by musical category and there is also a profile of Canadian vs. foreign controlled record labels.”

Hope this will help.

Occupation Question (female artists)

Question

A Researcher would like to know the number of women artists, between the ages of 55 -65, who live alone.

I have found the following 2006 Topic Based Tabulation will give me the number of female “Painters, sculptors and other visual artists” within the desired age range:

9 - Occupation - National Occupational Classification for Statistics 2006 (720C), Sex (3) and Selected Demographic, Cultural, Labour Force, Educational and Income Characteristics (273) for the Population 15 Years and Over

Is there any way to get the number of these females who also live alone?

Answer

This information would be available as a custom table (for a fee). I would be pleased to refer you to an Account-Executive in our Vancouver office if this is of interest to the researcher. The Account-Executive would be in a position to provide a cost estimate.

Visual Arts Workers

Question

We have a student here looking for occupational health statistics related to visual arts workers (painters, photographers, sculptors).

Where can we find statistical data on that subject?

Answer

Try contacting the CSST: they may be cooperative. We were able to get some good data for Ontario from their Worker's Compensation Board.

Yoga Statistics

Question

I'm looking for occurrence of yoga practice in Canada - either how many have tried it or how many have done it regularly. The question was asked in "National Population Health Survey, 1994. Supplemental surveys: nutrition, safety and accident prevention, smoking, breast-feeding, alcohol use during pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and use of health care services", but I was looking for something a little more up to date. Any ideas?

Answer

Searching in Vince's database at:
http://janus.ssc.uwo.ca/idls/variable.html
reveals that there are questions re yoga in CCHS 1.2 and 2.1, in 2001 and 2002 respectively.

Book Publishers

Question

Does anyone have any leads on book publishing industry - specifically sales and wages at the city or county level? I have looked at the tables in the Book publishers and exclusive agents: data tables, but they only are for provinces and regions. Canadian Business Patterns has already answered one part of this - it has the number of establishments for CMAs/CAs. I've tried Strategis too with no further luck. Should I tell the faculty person about the custom tabs on Book Publishing (cat 87C0012) or is there something in DLI that I have missed?

Answer

In regards to the book publishing request by CMA or county, It is possible to provide data on certain a few large CMA. In the last book survey (2000-01) only 627 publishers and 45 exclusive agents operated in all of Canada. The major ones operate in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

The data does not have a CMA code, but it can be derived via the postal code.

It is possible to produce a report on a cost recovery basis.
