I was looking for the PUMF files for the 2012 TSRC and they don't appear to be in the /MAD_PUMF_FMGD_DAM/Root/3810_TSRC_EVRC/2012 folder.
Also, for the 2011, 2012 and 2013 TSRC, the Standard and Non-Standard Tables are only available in French. Are they available in English?

British Columbia Tourism Data
Question
A student here is looking for data on the number of foreign tourists in British Columbia.
He would like to obtain monthly data for the number of foreigners in British Columbia, engaged in each of the following activities, over the past 5 or 10 years.
- Skiing/snowboarding
- Sightseeing
- Visiting national parks
- Shopping
- Hiking
- Visiting beaches
The International Travel Survey doesn’t get into that level of detail, as far as I can tell; the Travel Survey of Residents of Canada has closer to that level of detail, but isn`t for foreign visitors.
Do you know if such data exist and are available? I have contacted the organization: DestinationBC, to ask if they might provide such data for a student who wishes to use them for a data analytics class. I also sent him a link to the data set on OpenDataBC, on the numbers of visitors to visitor information centres.Where else can he look?

The Room Revenue Statistics <http://bcstats.gov.bc.ca/Files/c071216f-989d-42ea-9a8c-f68e885274ec/TourismRoomRevenue1303.xlsx> provides data for specific locations that the student could cross correlate with information on popular tourist type activities. For example, Tourism Vancouver statistics available at: <http://www.tourismvancouver.com /media/marketing-research/>. Most of the other economic regions/ municipalities in B.C. will have similar types of information.
There is a good guide to finding addition statistics called "WHERE TO GO FOR MORE TOURISM RESEARCH INFORMATION BC, CANADIAN, & INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS SOURCE LIST" available at:<http://www.tourismvancouver.com /pdf/research/where_to_go_tourism_research.pdf>.

Travel Activities and Motivation Survey 2006
Question
We would like to ask about a data issue with the TAMS 2006/EAPV 2006. The command files in French and English declare the following:
VALUE LABELS </E07_Q01> 7
Should we go ahead and re-run the command file omitting the 7? Please note, the data file itself contains no values of 7 for this variable as per the screen shot from <http://www62.stat can.ca/webview/>

We consulted the TAMS Codebook and there is no value label 7. In order to remain consistent with the codebook, I would remove the value. It seems to be an error in the syntax provided.

Aircraft Traffic in Canada
Question
I'm looking for detailed information on aircraft movement in Canada, Specifically: Domestic air-traffic between different cities (airports) in Canada, by carrier (Air Canada, WestJet etc) for all domestic carriers, including private flights.” There are CANSIM tables with aircraft data, but nothing with the level of detail (departure and arrival city, carrier) that I would like. Is there any way of getting microdata from the Aircraft Movement Statistics Survey? <http://www23.statcan.gc.ca/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=2715>

Unfortunately that level of information is not available. This level of detail would not be available through a custom tabulations either. The program does not measure traffic between cities.

Travel Survey of Residents of Canada – 2006, 2007, 2008 Public Use Microdata File (PUMF) - Revised data
Revised data files for the Travel Survey of Residents of Canada (TSRC) 2006, 2007 and 2008 PUMF are now available on the DLI FTP and website. Please replace the previous version of these data files with the revised versions.
The author division provided the following information regarding the revisions:
* "The TSRC data has been revised for years 2006, 2007 and 2008. Here is what was adjusted:
* 1. Allocation of private and commercial cottages for years 2006 and 2007
* Data users questioned a substantial increase of private cottages/lodges roofing combined with a decrease of similar magnitude of the commercial cottage/lodge roofing between years 2006/2007 and 2008. We have investigated the issue and found a programming error that derailed the proper allocation of the data to the right accommodation derived variable.
* 2. Reallocation of expenditures for food and beverages for all years
* In the audit report, it was found that one record did not have its food and beverages expenditures (bought in restaurant/store) reallocated correctly. We have investigated this and found that indeed, there was a problem when there were trips with no nights spent in the main destination, no food and restaurant expenditures were allocated to the destination visit record. All of the food bought in stores and restaurant expenditures were being allocated to the other visit records."

Border Crossing Volume Data
Question
I just received a request for the following information and wonder if anyone might have a suggestion?
I am looking for border crossing volume for the BC/American border that is broken down by specific border crossing and by day for my undergrad economic thesis. I have looked through E-SAT, but the only data I was able to find was monthly border data that was not broken down by specific crossings. My professor said that he worked with daily data for the Ontario area, so I assume it exists for BC.
I expect the student may be referring to the CANSIM Table 427-00011 ?
Number of international travellers entering or returning to Canada, by type of transport, monthly (persons) Definitions, data sources and methods: International Travel Survey: Frontier Counts - 5005

According to the User Guides for the survey, the following characteristics are available on both the "Canadian Residents, Trips Abroad (United States)" and the "United States Residents, Trips to Canada" microdata files:
* Date of exit and re-entry (Day, month, year)
* Canadian border crossing at exit and at re-entry (land port, airport, seaport)

Canadian Travel Survey - updates?

I was wondering whether there is or will be an update to the CTS? We only have till 2004 - but it looks like 2006 is the most recent release?

A patron is asking for the Travel Activities and Motivation Survey (tams). He has asked specifically for the data for a 2006 survey and specifically mentioned June 2006. The DLI FTP site has a /tams/1999/ folder with the date of 8/4/06. I have not found reference to a later survey. Is 1999 the most recent tams survey?
Answer
The most recent data that exists for this survey is 2005. They are going to the Policy Release Committee in October and hope to release in late November. No exact date as of yet.
Note the use of "hope to release" - remember that these dates are guidelines and may be pushed back (read: will probably be pushed back), so advise the user!

Small area retail trade estimates (SARTRE) is a system of developing user-defined tabulations of retail sales and number of locations as low as five-digit North American Industrial Classification (NAICS), for incorporated retailers with forward sortation area (FSA) levels of geographical detail. These data are derived by integrating survey data on chain stores with tax data (for non-chain retailers).

This cd-rom product is now available via the FTP and Web sites:
Sub-provincial Employment Dynamics uses longitudinal data to produce year-to-year changes in the number of employer businesses, employment and payrolls in Canada. Changes are shown by size of business and by business life status, which includes entry, exit, growth and decline.

ITS 2000 vs. ITS 2001-2005
Question
I'm looking at the ITS data - the new files - so 2000-2005. For the Canadian Resident, trips to overseas and trip to abroad(US) files.. the labels for Activities of Travelling Party.
In 2000 we have the following variables and labels:
ACT 1 ACTIVITY OF TRAVEL PARTY-FRIEND/RELATIVE
ACT 2 ACTIVITY OF TRAVEL PARTY-FESTIVALS/FAIRS
ACT 3 ACTIVITY OF TRAVEL PARTY-CULTURAL EVENTS
ACT 4 ACTIVITY OF TRAVEL PARTY-SPORTS EVENTS
ACT 5 ACTIVITY OF TRAVEL PARTY-SHOPPING
ACT 6 ACTIVITY OF TRAVEL PARTY-SIGHTSEEING

Are the labels for 2000 correct? or should they be the same as 2001-2005. From what I understand in 2002 when the New Initiatives for the ITS took place - both the 2000 and 2001 files were revised so users could compare back to 2000.
Answer
The labels for 2000 is correct but the are not the same as 2001-2005. Therefore some activities cannot be compared.
Act 4 is now activity 7
Act 5 is now activity 8
Act 6 is now activity 9
Act 7 is now activity 10
Act 8 is no longer on the questionnaire
Act 9 is now activity 12
Act 11 is now activity 6
Act 12 is now activity 14
Act 13 & 14 deleted and replaced
Act 15 is now activity 18 & 19
Act 16 & 17 is now activity 17
Act 18 & 19 is now activity 40

Annual Survey of Travel Arrangements
Question
I have a researcher who has found data from the Annual Survey of Travel Arrangements available on CANSIM (350002) and is now looking for more detailed geographic info - down to CMA, if possible. I figure we're not going to see this but thought I'd throw out the question to see what other sources of information people have used in the past.
Items the researcher is seeking include:
- services offered by businesses within the industry (hotels...)
- occupancy rates
- client-based packages they offer..
- revenue (?)

1. Statistics Canada does not offer that level of detail. Perhaps provincial tourist bureaus could be of assistance?
