Historical Maps (Quebec)

Question

I received a question recently asking about "maps of Quebec from 1800-1850 primarily of the eastern townships (east of Montreal) ideally that corresponds with census data from 1825, 1831, 1841."

I found the following on the LAC site, but I just want to be sure that I'm not missing anything.

1825: Library and Archives Canada's (LAC's) site for the 1825 Census for Lower Canada: http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1825/Pages/about-census.aspx. There is a sub-page for Districts and Sub-districts at http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1825/Pages/districts.aspx. This includes a map, along with a list of all the districts and sub-districts. According to the metadata for this map at http://collectionscanada.gc.ca/pam_archives/index.php?fuseaction=genitem.displayItem&lang=eng&rec_nbr=4127087 it is from 1835.

1841: There doesn't seem to be an 1841 Census on the LAC site, but they have a 1842 Census for Canada East (http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1842-Canada-East/Pages/about-census.aspx) and West (http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1842-canada-west/Pages/about-census.aspx). Both seem to use this map: http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1842-canada-west/Pages/census-districts-sub-districts.aspx, which is from 1855. 

 The resolution of this map isn't great, but I also found it in the David Ramsey Map Collection at http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~228305~5507616:Canada-East-And-West#.

Hysterectomies by ethnicity

Question

An student is looking for any recent aggregated data on hysterectomies in Quebec broken down by ethnicity or visible minority status. We have been able to find many sources for Quebec stats, but never broken down by ethnicity. Using Nesstar we were able to find variables in the Canadian Community Health Survey 2011-12 for hysterectomies (Variable MAM_038) and visible minority status, but provincial data seems only to be available for Alberta, Ontario and Newfoundland. All other provinces show 0 for variable MAM_038, so I checked the documentation and Appendix B confirmed that Quebec (and most other provinces) had opted out of the Mammography (MAM) questions (and yes, the hysterectomy variable is that category).

I also checked the Institut de la Statistique du Québec and Ministère de la Santé et des Services Sociaux but could not get a breakdown by ethnicity.

Can someone think of another data source?

The single year 2012 CCHS cycle should have that variable as mammography was a theme for just that year. L'Institut de la Statistique du Québec being one of our partners should have the single year 2012 for CCHS. When there is a theme, data is collected from all provinces.

Therefore, any provinces, should have data on that theme for that year regardless if they had opted out the prior year. Whoever is looking to get the data where a province had opted out in a prior year (in this example 2011 for Quebec), has to look on the single year release. In this case the person would have to look at the single year data file for CCHS 2012.

If someone tries to run it on the 2011-12 PUMF then they will only get results for the provinces that had opted in for 2011 even though mammography was a theme for 2012. The results for Canada are already low that trying to cross it by provinces and Ethnicity could prove to be a challenge in some areas.

The Financial Information of Universities and Colleges Survey was developed to provide financial information (income and expenditures) on all universities and degree-granting colleges in Canada. Clicking on 'other reference periods' (located in the left-side menu bar), will allow you to explore other time periods.

Portrait of Official-Language Minorities in Canada: Anglophones in Quebec

A Portrait of Official-Language Minorities in Canada: Anglophones in Quebec is being released today. This study paints a general statistical portrait of the official-language minority in Quebec based on data from the Census of Population and the Survey on the Vitality of Official-language Minorities in Canada, conducted in 2006. The purpose of such a portrait is to present a set of characteristics, behaviours and perceptions of the official-language minority population, exploiting the analytical opportunities contained in the data.

This demolinguistic portrait of the English-speaking population in Quebec was undertaken with the financial support of Canadian Heritage's Official Languages Secretariat, Human Resources and Social Development Canada and Justice Canada. It is one of eleven such portraits of official-language minorities in Canada, prepared by the Statistics Canada's Language Statistics Section.
