Hello,
I have some researchers looking for cost data related to cannabis at the provincial level. Specifically they are looking for data on consumer spending on legal vs. illegal cannabis (I already sent them to StatsCannabis, but they are hoping for market size data and not just cost/gram), as well as wholesale costs of legal retail cannabis shops.
They’ve already been to our RDC and there doesn’t seem to be anything to suit their needs there.

I’ve received the following response from subject matter:
“Thanks for your inquiry, we just released provincial level detail in the core Provincial and Territorial Economic Accounts. We do estimate Household Final Consumption Expenditure by province for legal medical, legal recreational and illegal recreational cannabis consumption. This data is available by province to 2018. Nationally, the same data is available up to 2019Q3 and for more timely data, data on legal recreational only is available from the Monthly Retail Trade Survey (see the three links attached).
As a note, the Monthly Retail Trade estimates only include legal cannabis sales made by retail stores, it would not include any retail sales made by provincial wholesalers or own use consumption, which are included in the household final consumption expenditure estimate.
Wholesale costs for legal cannabis retail shops are not currently available.

Historical Provincial GDP
Question
A researcher would like to have provincial GDP for the period 1950-1981 – preferably in quarterly form. Can you direct me to a source for these stats?

We have looked into your question below and have obtained confirmation that quarterly GDP estimates by province are not available. The division that disseminates provincial GSD estimates provided the following explanation and suggestions in response to your question:
" The Provincial Economic Accounts are only produced on an annual basis and quarterly GDP estimates by province are not available.
Secondly, provincial GDP estimates have been calculated starting with the reference year 1961 and no estimate exists at Statistics Canada prior to that year. It is important to note that the methodologies to derive the provincial estimates for the period 1981 to date are different than those that were used for the period 1961 to 1980. Those differences are explained in the document:
Latest Developments in the Canadian Economic Accounts (www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/13-605-x/2003001/chrono/4066065-eng.htm).
The provincial GDP estimates for the years 1961 to 1981, using the old methodologies, are presented in the catalogue 13-213S. You can also find the 1961 to 1980 estimates in CANSIM table 384-0015."

Provincial Economic Accounts

The Provincial Economic Accounts are .wk3 files which do not open in Excel 2007. Do you know if they will be converted to excel?

I will ask the author division for versions of these older files that can be opened with more recent versions of Excel.
As you may recall, we received the last issue of these products in 2008. They were replaced by web based tables that are available in both Excel and comma separated value (CSV) formats (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/mhonarc/dli-ild-msg/msg12998.html).
