Updated Products - Travel Survey of Residents of Canada

Travel Survey of Residents of Canada – 2006, 2007, 2008 Public Use Microdata File (PUMF) - Revised data

Revised data files for the Travel Survey of Residents of Canada (TSRC) 2006, 2007 and 2008 PUMF are now available on the DLI FTP and website. Please replace the previous version of these data files with the revised versions.

  • The file tsrc2006dat01-12.zip has been replaced with tsrc2006dat01-12-ver2.zip

  • The file tsrc2007dat01-12.zip has been replaced with tsrc2007dat01-12-ver2.zip

  • The file tsrc2008dat01-12.zip has been replaced with tsrc2008dat01-12-ver2.zip

The author division provided the following information regarding the revisions:

* "The TSRC data has been revised for years 2006, 2007 and 2008. Here is what was adjusted:

* 1. Allocation of private and commercial cottages for years 2006 and 2007

* Data users questioned a substantial increase of private cottages/lodges roofing combined with a decrease of similar magnitude of the commercial cottage/lodge roofing between years 2006/2007 and 2008. We have investigated the issue and found a programming error that derailed the proper allocation of the data to the right accommodation derived variable.

* 2. Reallocation of expenditures for food and beverages for all years

* In the audit report, it was found that one record did not have its food and beverages expenditures (bought in restaurant/store) reallocated correctly. We have investigated this and found that indeed, there was a problem when there were trips with no nights spent in the main destination, no food and restaurant expenditures were allocated to the destination visit record. All of the food bought in stores and restaurant expenditures were being allocated to the other visit records."

Survey of the Work and Health of Nurses, 2005

Question

Is the PUMF available for the Survey of the Work and Health of Nurses through the DLI?

Answer

A PUMF was not produced for the National Survey of the Work and Health of Nurses 2005 (NSWHN). The NSWHN page under Definitions, data sources and methods on the StatCan website provides some additional information about this:

"(...) A Public Use Microdata File (PUMF) will not be created for the NSWHN. This is a result of the sampling strategy used for the survey, that is, the selection of nurses from a frame that was created using registration information held by the 26 provincial/territorial regulatory bodies.

The survey results were released on December 11, 2006 in Statistics Canada's The Daily. The main report entitled, Findings from the 2005 National Survey of the Work and Health of Nurses (83-003-XIE), contains a high level description of the survey results and 51 summary tables. A second report containing provincial profiles (11-621-MWE2006052) was released simultaneously in Statistics Canada's Analysis in Brief.

Users requiring additional information may purchase custom tabulations. These outputs are reviewed for confidentiality before they are given to users.

Users can also do their own research by accessing the master release file through the Research Data Centres program. To protect the anonymity of individual nurses, some sensitive variables have been regrouped, capped or completely deleted from the master release file. Outputs based on research using the master release file are vetted for confidentiality by Statistics Canada before users can release them.

Before releasing and/or publishing any estimate from these files, users should first determine the number of sampled respondents who contribute to the calculation of the estimate. If this number is less than 30, the weighted estimate should not be released regardless of the value of the coefficient of variation for this estimate. For weighted estimates based on sample sizes of 30 or more, users should determine the coefficient of variation of the rounded estimate.

Users may also obtain custom tabulations or request access to the share file containing the records of nurses who agreed to share their information with the Canadian Institute of Health Information and Health Canada. The conditions described above also apply to the release and/or publication of any estimate from the share file.

Statistics Canada prohibits users from working with both the master release file and share file to do their research." (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=5080&lang=en&db=imdb&adm=8&dis=2#b9):

Russia - Demography

Question

This question is not about the DLI collection but if someone has an idea? I need to have the most recent demographic data from Russia and its 12 economic regions and/or its 21 republics. I searched in UNdata, the CIA Factbook and other usual demographic sources?

Answer

Here's the English version of the Census 2002 data from Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_federal_subjects_of_Russia_by_population

For more detailed info, you can try the Census 2002 site itself:

http://perepis2002.ru/index.html?id=87

I believe 1.8 on the Census page can be of interest. If you want newer info, let me know, I could try to find it.

Media Use in Classrooms

Question

I spoke with someone from StatsCan and they suggested that I contact you directly. We are conducting a study on the use of MEDIA (Audio Visual, Internet etc) in classrooms (i.e primary, secondary and post-secondary). We would like to retrieve information on the number of teachers in Canada (per province if possible), that have access to some form of media technology (i.e.
projectors, LCDs, etc..) The person from StatsCan suggested that you contact the Education Department from StatsCan and ask them for this information directly.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer

Our education contacts have confirmed that the most recent data they have on this topic is published in "Computers in the classroom: Opportunity and challenge" in Education matters. September 2004. Number 3. (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/81-004-x/200409/7017-eng.htm). They indicated that this publication is based on data from the 2003-2004 Information and Communications Technologies in Schools Survey (ICTSS).

Survey of Environmental Protection Expenditures

Question

Hi:

A researcher was looking for data from the Survey of Environmental Protection Expenditures. The data is available through CANSIM but only for the years 2006 and 2008. The survey however has been conducted every two years from 1996 onwards. Is it possible to obtain data from the survey for the earlier reference periods?

Answer

I found a publication called “Environmental Protection Expenditures in the Business Sector”: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/bsolc/olc-cel/olc-cel?catno=16F0006XWE&lang=eng

If you select the chronological index on the left-hand side of the screen, there are tables available in the HTML version for 2004. Prior to that, there are “printed” tables available in the PDF versions.

In any case, I have passed on your question to the author division to see if pre-2006 data is available through any other means and will keep you posted.

Additional Information

An analyst in the division confirmed that publication 16F0006XWE (“Environmental Protection Expenditures in the Business Sector”) is the only output for pre-2006 reference year estimates.

However, she also noted that the survey methodology underwent a complete redesign for the 2006 reference year and does not recommend that the estimates for 2006 and 2008 be compared to the estimates from earlier survey cycles.

I hope this answers your question.

Canadian Internet Use Survey

Question

I would like to confirm that the Canadian Internet Use Survey has been cancelled. If I am correct about this, is there somewhere that this is written down for reference purposes?

Answer

The division responsible for this survey has confirmed that Industry Canada sponsored a redesigned 2010 Canadian Internet Use Survey (CIUS). This survey is now back from the field and an initial release for the CIUS 2010 data is planned for Spring 2011. There however remains some uncertainty for a CIUS beyond the 2010 reference year. We will be sure to provide you with updates as more information becomes available.

At the moment, there are no plans to produce a 2009 PUMF. The author division explained that they are now a full cost recovery area. The 2009 CIUS was sponsored by Industry Canada as a full cost-recovery survey and a PUMF was not part of the deliverables. The earlier cycles were funded through the PRDG (of the Policy Research Initiative) under a MOU with the PUMF as a deliverable. This being said, the division would be pleased to undertake this additional work should funding become available.

I hope that this information is helpful. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

CCHS 2008/2009

Question

I have a prof needing the following information:

1. Do you have this yet? Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) - Healthy Aging 2008/2009 PUMF?

2. Do we have access to the Canadian Health Measures Survey? I see documentation on the DLI FTP site, but no data. When is the data likely to be available?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer

We do not have the CCHS Healthy Aging 2008/09 PUMF yet. Our latest information does indicate that it should be released this month, so I have asked the author division for an update.

The Canadian Health Measures Survey is available in the RDCs. At the request of some members at a presentation at the DLI training in Toronto last year, the Division provided the DLI with documentation for users interested in finding out what information is gathered from that survey. There are not enough data at this point to create a PUMF from that survey. It will take at least another year before deciding if they can create a PUMF or not. In the meantime, the Division has offered to do some free custom tabulations from that survey. If you are interested in following-up on this, we will put you in contact with a client service representative from the Division.

I hope this is clear. I will get back to you with more information about the CCHS 2008/09 PUMF release date as soon as I hear back from the division.

Additional Information

As a follow-up to my initial response below, the author division just confirmed that they now expect to release the CCHS 2008/09 PUMF in February 2011. They have offered to provide us with the exact date as soon as it is determined so we will keep you posted.

I will have the product release dates page updated to reflect this new information.

FOODEX

Question

Good day everyone!

Another quick question... Is there a follow-up to the FOODEX survey? The last one available is 2001 and a student of ours is interested in more recent data - does it exist somewhere?

Answer

I asked about this in June 2008. At that time the Food Expenditure Survey was listed as an active survey. At the present time it is listed as inactive and there is no indication the survey was taken in 2009. It supplements the Survey of Household Spending.

The response given:

“When I looked into foodex last March, I was told that the author division planned on collecting data in 2009 so as to release it in 2010 or 2011. I will ask the division for an update and will follow up with more information through the dlilist. In the future, please don't hesitate to ask this type of questions through the dlilist. I am sure that they will be of interest to others!”

Additional Information

We have received the following information in response to your question below:

"Income Statistics Division has collected household spending data for 2010 using a new collection model of the Survey of Household Spending, and plans to release the main spending estimates at the end of 2011. The new model has collected greater detail for food, but the extent of the extra food detail that will be released and the exact timing of the release (simultaneous with the rest of the Survey of Household Spending data or later) is not yet finalised and will depend on the results of analysis and assessments of the data quality over this coming year."

I have asked the author division to inform us when the release plans have been finalised so that we can share this information with the DLI community.

Dissemination Block-Level Data

Question

Can someone please help clarify access to dissemination block level data for the 2006 Census?

I know we have access through GeoSuite (and Geosearch) to population and dwelling counts at the DB level; however, I have a researcher who is looking for characteristic (profile) data at the DB level. I know through DLI we only get profile files down to DA.

The following STC page (http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/ref/dict/geo014a-eng.cfm) explains that only population and dwelling counts are disseminated at the DB level.

I am assuming DB data exists though and can be requested; however, would this constitute a custom tab or an RDC request? Does it depend on whether it’s used for analytical vs. descriptive services.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer

You are correct, the dissemination area (DA) is the lowest level of geography for which census data are available through the DLI.

Dissemination block level data can however be requested on a custom basis for a fee. Based on previous inquiries about data at the block level, it is my understanding that areas of interest need to have a minimum population of 100 when no income data are requested and a minimum population threshold of 250 for data with income characteristics. Other confidentiality and suppression rules may also apply. I would be happy to refer you to an Account Executive who can provide additional information about this type of custom product and confirm if the specific data your researcher needs are available and at what cost if he/she is interested in custom 2006 Census products.

With regards to the availability of block level data through the RDCs, I have asked our census contacts to confirm if one could use the the 2006 Census microdata file (RDC) to access data at this level and will send you additional information about this as soon as I receive their answer. I couldn't find a block level geography variable in the codebook for the 2006 Census RDC file but have asked our Census contacts to advise and confirm. For your reference, a copy of this codebook is available at: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/meta/census-recensement/2006/rdc-codebook-public-2006-ver2-cdr-manuel-des-codes.pdf The RDC application process and guidelines are described at: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/rdc-cdr/process-eng.htm

Additional Information

I have received confirmation that the 2006 Census microdata file that is available through the RDCs only goes down to the Census Tract level. Block level data would therefore only be available on a custom basis. If your client wishes to look into this option, I will refer you to an Account-Executive in the Toronto regional office.

1986 Survey of Union Membership

Question

Greetings:

In the course of clearing out EDRS, I found a printed codebook for the 1986 Survey of Union Membership. When I searched the Statistics Canada website to find out more about this Survey, I found a reference to: Survey of Union Membership – 1984, which is listed as being a “one-time” survey. So now I am curious if these might be referring to the same survey?

There is no publication or other date on the microdata documentation file that we have.

Answer

As you have noted, the Data, definitions and sources section of the StatCan website indicates that the 1984 Survey of Union Membership was a one time survey (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=3830&lang=en&db=imdb&adm=8&dis=2). This is consistent with the Survey of Union membership files in the DLI collection (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/data-donnees/ftp/sum-eas/sum-eas1984-eng.htm).

I suspect that the print document you have found in your collection is the one also found here: http://prod.library.utoronto.ca:8090/datalib/codebooks/cst/sum86/sum86gid1.pdf

I looked through this document and the cover page does indicate that it relates to a 1986 Survey of Union Membership. Section 5 - Collection of the document however states that the data for this survey were collected during the week of Dec. 17-22 1984 . I will ask the author division to confirm this but I suspect that there may be a typo on the cover page of the print document.

Additional Information

The author division has confirmed that there was only a 1984 Survey of Union Membership (no 1986 survey). I am not sure if the print document you found is identical to the one I linked to below but if it is, there is a typo on the cover page and the date should read 1984 (not 1986).

Announcement - Upcoming Labour Force Survey Revisions

Note to readers: Upcoming LFS revisions

Following the release of final population estimates from each census, a standard revision is applied to the Labour Force Survey (LFS) estimates. The revised estimates are scheduled to be released on Friday, January 28, 2011, and will include the following:

LFS estimates are currently based on the 2001 Census population estimates. These data will be adjusted to reflect 2006 Census population estimates and will be revised back to 1996.

Industry estimates will be reclassified to the 2007 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) from the 2002 NAICS and revised back to 1987.

Geography boundaries will be updated to the 2006 Standard Geographical Classification (SGC) rather than the current 2001 SGC. With this change, six new census metropolitan areas (CMAs) will be added and the boundaries of seven existing CMAs will be modified. New CMA tables will be created based on the 2006 census boundaries and will date back to 1996.

Finally, the 2006 National Occupational Classification for Statistics (NOC-S) will replace the 2001 NOC-S. This change will not affect the LFS estimates as there were only minor changes to the description of the categories.

Please note that the changes to the estimates will be minor. Rates of unemployment, employment and participation are essentially unchanged, as are key labour market trends.

During the revision, CANSIM data for the LFS will not be available from Friday, January 21 to Thursday, January 27, 2011. To facilitate access to the revised data, LFS data on CANSIM will be free from January 28 to February 3, 2011.

The current LFS CMA CANSIM tables based on 2001 census boundaries 282-0052, 282-0053, 282-0056 to 282-0059, 282-0090 and 282-0091 will be terminated and replaced by new tables 282-0109 to 282-0114, 282-0116 and 282-0117 (start date 1996). To help users convert from the current to new CANSIM tables, a concordance table between the old and new vector numbers is available.

* Vector number concordance table (Available on Cansim-What’s new?)

Also, the following current CANSIM tables based on 2001 Census boundaries 282-0064, and 282-0096 to 282-0099 will be deleted and replaced by new tables 282-0115 and 282-0118 to 282-0121.

The revised data will also be available on the Labour Force Historical Review DVD-ROM, which will be released in March 2011. For further information on these changes, contact Client Services (toll-free 1-866-873-8788; 613-951-4090; labour@statcan.gc.ca).

Absence of Visible Minority Variable in SLID

Question

A researcher here would like to know if the visible minority variable, available in the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) master file, could be made available in the PUMF. If the main issue is sample size, could it at least be available at the national level?

Answer

The division that produces this PUMF indicated that the disclosure risk of including a visible minority variable on the PUMF was deemed high and that it therefore isn't available in this PUMF. They recommended that the researcher consider using the Research Data Centres (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/rdc-cdr/index-eng.htm) if he/she wishes to work with a SLID visible minority variable.

I hope that this information is helpful.

Courts Personnel and Expenditures Survey

Question

I have a student looking for more recent information from the 2000-2001 court personnel and expenditures survey. Specifically, she is looking for:

I am really interested in only the court costs - how much does it cost to run a court house? What are some of the operational expenses included in this? what are the salaries of court personnel, judges, lawyers, etc.

If there is a more recent source for this information, please let me know.

Answer

The StatCan survey that collected the 2000/2001 data you located no longer appears to be active (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=3310&lang=en&db=imdb&adm=8&dis=2); the last reference period for this survey was 2002/2003 (see the following Daily release for data for these years: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/041123/dq041123e-eng.htm).

I have asked our justice contacts if they can recommend a more recent source for similar data and will share their recommendations with you as soon as I receive their response.

Income data by occupation are available from the census (for example: http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/dp-pd/tbt/St-eng.cfm?LANG=E&Temporal=2006&APATH=3&THEME=81&FREE=0&GRP=1). These census data may be of interest to the student as well.

I hope that this information is helpful.

Additional Information

The author division confirmed that the last time data was collected and published for the Courts Resources, Expenditures and Personnel Survey was 2002/2003. They indicated that in the future justice expenditures data will come from the data collected by the the division that disseminates our public sector statistics. The publication of justice expenditures data from this source is however still several years away.

You may wish to see if other organisations (Justice Canada or the jurisdictions/organisations that generate some of these data) publish any of the figures the student needs.

Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (PALS) Question

Question

Good afternoon everyone!

I have another PALS question. We're looking at the PUMF file for 2006 and if I select ONLY those individuals with a disability (DISAB = 1) and those individuals whose income source is social assistance (AHUI_Q32F = 1).. then look at hours worked (HOURSP) - I'm left with 2130 respondents where the hours worked is Not Applicable, age <15 yrs, institutional residents.

Does this make sense? I have a graduate student who is looking at this particular question and would like to access the Master file - but is very concerned about this result. Would it be possible to check with the Authoring division to see whether this truly is the case? Is there any way to see whether there are any individuals with HOURSP that have a disability and have social assistance? This will help us determine whether the graduate student should pursue this line of inquiry or not.

Answer

A methodologist in the author division provided the following response to your question about the PALS 2006 PUMF:

"If you are working with the disabled population (DISAB=1), then you don't want to look at the variable HOURSP on the PUMF. Instead, you want to use the equivalent variable AEDE_Q01. The reason is that HOURSP is derived from the question on hours worked that was asked on Census. The same question was asked again on PALS to those who had a limitation (variable AEDE_Q01) and who had previously said they worked (ALFS_Q01=1). Since PALS came AFTER census, it was preferable to use this variable when possible (i.e. when DISAB=1) because it is more recent. This is why we put HOURSP=NA, age<15, institution residents, for everyone with a disability (because for this population, a more up to date variable exists).

Recap: If DISAB=1 and you want to look at the hours worked, you use AEDE_Q01. If DISAB=0, then you use HOURSP."

Looking for Data on Value of Property Seizures in Canada

Question

A student is looking for data on the value of property seized by the police in Canada between 1991 and 2006. Do you have any suggestions as to where these data might be obtained? I´ve looked in Justice Statistics, and it doesn´t seem to capture this information.

Answer

While looking into your question, I came across a few references to the Seized Property Management Directorate of Public Works and Government Services Canada (http://www.tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca/apropos-about/fi-fs/bs-spm-eng.html). Their website provides some figures for 1998-1999 to 2008-2009 that may help the student. Their administrative reports may provide additional figures.

Our public sector statistics contacts have confirmed that they don't collect these data.

I hope that this confirmation and the suggestion above are helpful to you and the student.

Data by Dissemination Area in Beyond 2020 Files

Question

The researcher was using the 2006 Census Complete Cumulative Profile at the DA level and the PCCF to map socio-economic indicators by postcode - something he´s done before for the 2001 census. He had no problem for most of the country, but for the Saskatchewan he came across an abnormally large number of DAs (740/2300) that don´t appear in the B2020 file. I had a look at a couple of them and there is data for the CSD (the 7 digit number, i.e., 4701001) but not for the DA (8 digits). It doesn´t seem random enough to be a case of data suppression, what am I/he missing?

I can provide a full list of missing DAs if helpful.

Answer

The following 2006 Census dissemination area (DA) level suppression lists describe the DAs for which data have been suppressed and could be used to confirm if data for DAs in the Beyond 20/20 file have been suppressed.

Dissemination area suppression list including census subdivisions in which they are located - 100% data
http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/ref/notes/sup_DA2A-AD2A-eng.cfm

Dissemination area suppression list including census subdivisions in which they are located - 20% sample data
http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/ref/notes/sup_DA2B-AD2B-eng.cfm

If you have any questions about specific DAs, please don't hesitate let me know and I will be happy to ask our census contacts to advise.

I hope that this is helpful.

Census of Agriculture Response Rates

Question

An Economics student has asked me where to find the response rates for the 1986, 1991, and 1996 Censuses of Agriculture. Is this published somewhere, and if so, where?

Thanks for your help.

Answer

Our Census of Agriculture contacts have looked into your question and have located the following sources and information:

Catalogue no. 96-102 Census Canada 1986 Agriculture page xv
In 1986 Census, the non-response rate amounted to less than 0.5 per cent

Catalogue no. 93-350 Agricultural Profile of Canada Census 1991 pt. 1 page xxi
A response rate of over 98% also contributed to its overall success.

Catalogue no. 93-356-XPB Agricultural Profile of Canada Census 1996 page xix
A response rate of almost 99% also contributed to the overall success of the 1996 Census of Agriculture.

Historical Census Data for Laxgalts'ap

Question

I am working with a researcher who needs historical census data going back 20 years (so essentially going back to and including the 1991 Census) for Laxgalts’ap (5949840).

2006 – According to the suppression lists at http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/ref/notes/sup_CSD2A-SDR2A-eng.cfm) and (http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/ref/notes/sup_CSD2B-SDR2B-eng.cfm), the data for Laxgalts’ap was suppressed. As there is data available for Laxgalts’ap in the 2001 Census, and the population in this community actually grew somewhat between 2001 and 2006, I am assuming this was not because of low population numbers but because of a problem with the data. However, it would be nice to be able to provide the researcher with a reason as to why the 2006 data is not available. I could not find this information in any documentation, but I do seem to remember hearing something about some problem in the 2006 Census that resulted in this kind of suppression…

1991 and 1996 – Laxgalts’ap was not a CSD before 2001. The area was included in the Kitimat-Stikine, Subd A CSD (5949037). As I don’t have EA maps for these censuses, I compared the 2006 DA boundary file with the 1996 and 1991 EA boundary files to try to determine the EAs that encompassed Laxgalts’ap in the earlier years. From what I can see, the relevant EAs for 1996 are 59025404 and 59025406 and the relevant EA for 1991 was 59025404. Is it possible to verify this for me please?

Answer

According to the Data Quality Notes for the 2006 Community Profile for Laxgalts’ap, data were suppressed for the following reasons:

• Data quality index showing, for the short census questionnaire (100% data), a global non response rate higher than or equal to 25% (suppressed).
• Data quality index showing, for the long census questionnaire (20% sample data), a global non-response rate higher than or equal to 25% (suppressed).

(See: http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/dp-pd/prof/92-591/details/page_Notes.cfm?Lang=E&Geo1=CSD&Code1=5949840&Geo2=PR&Code2=59&Data=Count&SearchText=Laxgaltsap&SearchType=Begins&SearchPR=01&B1=All&Custom=&DQF=03030)

Further Information

Our geography contact has verified that you found the correct EA’s for Laxgalts’ap in 1991 and 1996. Here is her explanation:

“I used GeoRef 1996 to look up all of the EAs in Kitimat-Stikine, Subd A CSD (5949037) for 1996:

59025121
59025218
59025367
59025401
59025402
59025411

59025404 belonged to the CSD Lachkaltsap 9 (5949825) in 1996
59025406 belonged to the CSD Lachkaltsap 9 (5949825) in 1996

The 1996 CSD Lachkaltsap 9 (5949825) is now part of the 2006 CSD Laxgalts’ap (5949840) as of 11/05/2000. Only the 1996 EAs 59025404 and 59025406 are part of the 2006 CSD Laxgalts’ap (5949840).

I also looked in the 1991EA_1996EA_Correspondence file and confirmed that the client is correct that 59025404 is the relevant EA for 1991.”

Urban/Rural Indicator in GSS Cycle 18

Question

I have a Professor here, who is using the GSS Cycle 18 – Victimization (2004), in a course with second year students. The students are performing various cross-tabulations and one of the independent variables they are being asked to include is the “Urban/Rural Indicator” (urind). Curiously, apart from “Urban” and “Rural”, another response option is for “Prince Edward Island”.

I believe this has to do with the sample, but the Professor was looking for an explanation as to why the PEI respondents were not included in one of the Urban or Rural responses. I have searched through the User’s Guide and other documentation for a rationale for this, but wasn’t able to locate anything.

Would there be some other documentation or explanation that could help clear this up?

Answer

"Here are some details for the inquiry about the specific variable in the PUMF for Rural/Urban. There are no CMAs in PEI and CMA is what is used to determine the urban-rural indicators.

Previous GSS PUMFs have sometimes included a rural/urban indicator called URIND (1=Urban, 2=Rural, 3=PEI). This derived variable is based on the UA_RA_TYPE geocodes (e.g. Cycle14).

For cycle 17 onwards , instead of URIND, a new rural/urban indicator (LUC_RST) was included as follows: The new variable is based on GEO_SAC_TYPE. The categories "CMA, CA tracted, CA untracted" are grouped into a new category “Larger Urban Centres”, and "Strong MIZ, Moderate MIZ, Weak MIZ and No MIZ" are grouped into a new category called “Rural and Small Town”. PEI is kept as a separate category.

LUC_RST
1 Larger Urban Centres (CMA/CA)
2 Rural and Small Town (non-CMA/CA)
3 PEI "

Number of Engineers & Geoscientists Working in Businesses with Less Than 5 Employees in Alberta

Question

I am looking for the number of engineers and geoscientists working in businesses with less than 5 employees in Alberta (most recent number available). If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate the help.

Thank-you.

Answer

This information unfortunately doesn't seem to be readily available in a recent StatCan standard aggregated data product.

Occupation related data for Alberta are available from surveys such as the Census for example but these wouldn't include information on business size. Other surveys and programs (Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours - SEPH for example) could provide employment information by industry (NAICS) and enterprise size but unfortunately wouldn't include occupation related variables.

Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) seems to have both occupation related variables and employer related variables (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/75f0026x/2010000/theme-eng.htm) but the smallest range for number of employees seems to be "less than 20" employees so I don't expect that this would meet your client's needs. I am also not sure that this survey would be appropriate to produce the estimates you need but would be happy to ask our SLID contacts to advise if you are interested in SLID. If you also wish to look into SLID, SLID public use microdata files are available through the DLI and analytical files through the RDCs. SLID data are also be available as a custom product on a cost recovery basis.

I hope that this information is helpful.

Internet Use by Children

Question

Does anyone know, offhand, if stats are collected on internet usage by children under 15? I can find all sorts of surveys, but the lowest age I can find is 15.

Answer

The National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY) collected data on computer and internet use by children under 15. You can locate examples of the types of questions used to collect these data by doing a quick search for "Internet" in the questionnaires for NLSCY cycle 7 (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getInstrumentLink&SurvId=4450&SurvVer=1&InstaId=16044&InstaVer=7&lang=en&db=imdb&adm=8&dis=2).

NLSCY microdata are available through the Research Data Centres (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/rdc-cdr/index-eng.htm) and custom tabulations can be produced on request on a cost recovery basis (I can refer you to an Account Executive in our Toronto regional office if custom tables are of interest). Public use microdata files for this survey haven't been produced since the late 90's due to confidentiality reasons as this is a longitudinal survey.

I also looked at the documentation for the Canadian Internet Use Survey (2007) and General Social Survey cycle 19 on time use but the target populations for these surveys appear to be too old for your needs.

I hope that this is helpful.

Census Data: Income by Educational Attainment

Question

I am new to this service, so any help on the following will be greatly appreciated. I have a student looking for 2006 census data that will cover all of the following:

The student could also consider using the 2006 Census public use microdata file (PUMF) but it won't contain data for individual ages (these aren't available for confidentiality reasons), only age groups. The PUMF is available on the DLI FTP site and can be used with a statistical analysis application such as SPSS or SAS. It can also be consulted on the Statistics Canada Nesstar site at www62.statcan.ca

Additional data may be available on a cost recovery basis. If this is of interest to the student, I would be happy to refer you to an Account Executive in our Halifax regional office who can confirm what tables can be produced on a custom basis and provide a cost estimate for the tables (the minimum cost for semi-custom census products is $305 and custom census tabulations start at $1115).

National Graduates Survey 2000

Question

DLI has the NGS follow-up survey; class of 2000, but not the NGS 2000?

Why is this?

Thanks. We've had a request for it.

Answer

The DLI collection includes a public use microdata file (PUMF) for the Follow-up of Graduates Survey - Class of 2000 but we don't have one for the National Graduate Survey (NGS) - class of 2000 as a PUMF wasn't produced for the National Graduate Survey (NGS) - class of 2000. We asked our education contacts about this and they explained that "It was decided to produce one PUMF for the class of 2000 that included both the NGS and the FOG in order to produce a more comprehensive PUMF for the FOG-Class of 2000. If a NGS PUMF were to have been released it would have reduced significantly the breadth of information that was released on the FOG."

Geography Questions - # of Sub-Geographies per CD/CSD

Question

Is there a way to know for any given CD or CSD how many DAs, EAs, CTs, FSAs, Postal codes they contain? I was looking at the StatCan website and I could not find that information.

I am trying to see how many of these sub-geographies there are for 32 CDs/CSDs in Canada.

Answer

This can be determined by analyzing the PCCF. Select SLI=1, RET_DATE=19000001 and the 32 CDs/CSDs you want. Then aggregate over the different levels of geography you want.

Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) 2008 - Public Use Microdata File (PUMF)

The Public Use Microdata File (PUMF) for the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) 2008 is now available on the DLI FTP and website.

"The cross-sectional public-use microdata file for the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) is a collection of income, labour and family variables on persons in Canada and their families. This file includes many safeguards to prevent the identification of any one person.
Although often referred to as a single file, the SLID public-use microdata file is actually four separate files: key, person, economic family and census family.

The person file contains identifier data, which allows a researcher to group persons into households, economic families and census families, as well as link each of these files together." (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/bsolc/olc-cel/olc-cel?catno=75M0010XCB&lang=eng)
