Question:
Looking for some advice from the group here. I have a research team who is looking for data on money sent to other countries as gifts, ideally at the individual level but aggregated would be okay. Immigration and/or citizenship status is critical here
The SHS has a question on this, with its variable (MC_Q020) in the master file but also grouped into MG001 in the PUMF. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like immigration status/place-of-birth/citizenship is asked within the SHS. (Please correct me if I’m wrong, though!)
Can anyone suggest a potential way forward for the researcher via an existing alternate dataset? The 2013 GSS (Giving) has the socioeconomic variables but no variables on giving to people/org’s outside of Canada itself.
Answer:
This is an interesting report published by Statistics Canada. Study on International Money Transfers. There are information about remittances as gifts, as percentages, broken down by region and countries.

RTRA Extracts for SHS 2016
Question:
A few months ago, it was reported on this list that the U of Ottawa was doing RTRA extracts from SHS 2016, and would make the tables available to others. Does anyone have any information on how this is going?
As I promised a few months ago, I am going to send the subject division cookies, when they finally release a new SHS PUMF.
Answer:
We have completed considerable work on the RTRA SHS extracts but we are understanding now why StatCan dropped these as it involves considerable custom programming for the sheer volume of expenditure &/or equipment classes. It is important to us to document our work and perhaps share it back with StatCan.
Can you tell [us] what expenditure or equipment classes you need and any breakdowns by province, some CMAs or major household and dwelling variables? We can research specifics and will get back to you on list with the follow-up details.
One additional point is that the latest SHS year in RTRA is 2015. Will that suit your needs?
We will also ask StatCan to verify if / when 2016 will be made available.

PUMF for Canadian Disability Survey
Question:
I know that there was a decision not to have a PUMF for the CSD 2012.
What is the decision for the CSD 2017? Is there any chance that there will be a PUMF for the CSD 2012 – will they be reconsidering this decision?
Also, do you know when we will be receiving CANSIM tables for the CSD 2017?
Answer:
We have received the following response from subject matter regarding your inquiry:
“Unfortunately, there will be no PUMF for 2017 or 2012. There will be 8 or 9 CSD 2017 data tables (no longer called CANSIM tables) released on November 28, 2018 (CSD release day) and we are exploring other potential data tables for later release.”
We have made them aware that there is interest for a PUMF so we’ll keep pursuing that avenue.

Sexual Misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces
Question:
A) Will there be a PUMF for Sexual Misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces? I know that you can get data from the RDCs.
B) A related question – can DLI put together a list of surveys indicating whether or not there is a pumf for that particular survey, and if not, where can we access the data, if it is possible. This would save us and our clients a lot of time.
Answer:
A)The subject matter area responsible has informed us that there are no plans to develop a PUMF for the Survey on Sexual Misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces (SSMCAF). It seems the data will only be made available through the RDCs. However, we have ensured that the team is aware of the level of interest.
B) Members of the DLI community have access to a listing of all DLI products. Also, on the EFT safe (MAD_PUMF_FMGD_DAM) there is a readme excel file that lists all PUMFs available in the DLI. All PUMFs have an associated master file. A listing of all master files available in the RDCs can be found at the data available in the RDCs page.

Most current SHS PUMF
Question
Is the PUMF for the 2015 SHS available? I’m finding loads of tables, and Nesstar has the 2009 PUMF, but that’s all I’m seeing.
Followup
I last asked this question in March. The SHS was revised and changed in 2010. No PUMF has been done since the revision. We keep asking but the author division has not had the resources to produce a PUMF.
We will keep making the case that even doing a PUMF every couple of years would be a huge benefit from or this very important and heavily used survey.
Answer
Unfortunately the last PUMF produced for this survey was in 2009, but I have passed this thread along to the author division and I’ve asked them whether they have any news on releasing a PUMF. Unfortunately there is no plan yet in the decision to produce a SHS PUMF. The more recent data remains the SHS PUMF 2009. As Peter said, we’ll continue to make the case for a PUMF to be produced and highlight its importance in the data community.

Industrial Water Survey (IWS): any PUMF access?
Question
I have a University of Toronto researcher who is interested in data obtained through the Industrial Water Survey (IWS).
She has looked at several CANSIM tables (I have the numbers) that are using data from the IWS, but the tables do not provide enough detail for her either at the geographic level nor at the manufacturing subsector level. She is also looking for further breakdowns related to water acquisition and public utilities costs.
I don’t see the IWS listed as a DLI product. Would it still be possible to get access to a IWS PUMF through DLI, or should the researcher contact Statistics Canada directly?
Answer
I received a reply from subject matter. It appears your client [has two] ways forward - Custom tabulation or application through the Canadian Centre for Data Development and Economic Research (CDER)
If they are interested in custom tables it would help to have a clear understanding of the specific dimensions for the data request (e.g., what level of NAICS and geography) along with a list of variables. I’m assuming by the reference to the manufacturing subsector that the client is only interested in the manufacturing industry, is that correct? I can pass this information off to subject matter for an estimate.
Should they wish to pursue access through CDER, they would be subject to CDER’s research application process and be expected access the files onsite at Statistics Canada head office. More information can be found here: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/eng/cder/prop

Public Service Employee Survey
Question
A PhD student is inquiring about the availability of the Public Service Employee Survey (PSES) through DLI. We have access to several cycles, the most recent being 2008. Is there a plan to produce a public file for the 2011 and 2014 cycles? I did not find anything on the listserv about this survey.
Answer
They did not create a PUMF for 2011. Detailed aggregate tables were released in the Open Data portal. The microdata file is available in the RDCs. For 2014, subject matter was looking at once again creating a PUMF, pending resources. Chris will follow up with subject matter to confirm. Once again detailed aggregate tables were released in the Open Data portal and the masterfile will be available in the RDCs.

Survey of Innovation and Business Strategy
Question
Is there a PUMF or any other information available for the “Survey of Innovation and Business Strategy,” which was last released in 2010. I have a researcher looking for any data she can get on business innovation. There are a few tables on the Statcan, but is there anything else?
Answer
We typically only have access to aggregate data for Business Surveys. It is accessible through The Canadian Centre for Data Development and Economic Research (CDER). CDER is located within Statistics Canada's Ottawa facilities on the 18th Floor of the R.H. Coats Building. Access to Statistics Canada's holdings of business microdata is available only at this facility. A prospective researcher must submit a project proposal to CDER following the process outlined in the CDER application process and guidelines. Only research-oriented projects can be undertaken at CDER. Alternative access to the data would be to request a custom tab from the subject matter divisions.

National Graduates Survey 2000
Question
DLI has the NGS follow-up survey; class of 2000, but not the NGS 2000?
Why is this?
Thanks. We've had a request for it.
Answer
The DLI collection includes a public use microdata file (PUMF) for the Follow-up of Graduates Survey - Class of 2000 but we don't have one for the National Graduate Survey (NGS) - class of 2000 as a PUMF wasn't produced for the National Graduate Survey (NGS) - class of 2000. We asked our education contacts about this and they explained that "It was decided to produce one PUMF for the class of 2000 that included both the NGS and the FOG in order to produce a more comprehensive PUMF for the FOG-Class of 2000. If a NGS PUMF were to have been released it would have reduced significantly the breadth of information that was released on the FOG."
