I have a researcher who is looking for data from the CHMS on obesity.
They are hoping to have the data from this table for 2007 (this table only has data between 2009-2017)
Table 13-10-0373-01 Overweight and obesity based on measured body mass index, by age group and sex

We’ve received the following response from subject matter:
“In the table provided, you can look at footnote 2, it reads ‘’Data from the Canadian Health Measures Survey are collected over a two-year period from a sample of approximately 5,700 respondents. Cycle 1 data collected from March 2007 to February 2009. Cycle 2 data collected from August 2009 to December 2011. Data collected from January to December of the following year for subsequent cycles.”
Unfortunately we were restricted with the naming of the columns, therefore the 2009 column includes all of Cycle 1, which was collected from March 2007 to February 2009.”

Canadian Health Measures Survey
Question
I have a researcher who is looking to possibly use the Canadian Health Measures Survey and is looking for information on what components data is collected for.
Here is the question:
I am trying to determine if I could potentially use the Canadian Health Measures Survey for an upcoming study. I know they collect biological samples (blood, urine etc.) and I was just wondering if there is a list of which components they collected data for (e.g. creatinine, arsenic).
Does such a list exist and is it publicly available? If not, is there someone she could contact to get this information?

Grip strength reference values for Canadians aged 6 to 79: Canadian Health Measures Survey, 2007 to 2013 - The purpose of this analysis was to use data from the 2007-to-2013 Canadian Health Measures Survey to develop reference equations for maximum, right-hand and left-hand grip strength for Canadians aged 6 to79, based on a healthy, nationally representative population. These equations can be used to determine reference values against which to assess an individual’s grip strength.
Reduced muscular strength among Canadians aged 60 to 79: Canadian Health Measures Survey, 2007 to 2013 - Data on grip strength among 3,181 respondents aged 60 to 79 from the 2007 to 2013 Canadian Health Measures Survey were used to compare the prevalence of reduced muscular strength based on percentile, t-score and the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health grip strength cut-points, and examine associations between reduced strength and impaired mobility, self-rated health, and disability.

CCHS 2008/2009
Question
I have a prof needing the following information:
1. Do you have this yet? Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) - Healthy Aging 2008/2009 PUMF?
2. Do we have access to the Canadian Health Measures Survey? I see documentation on the DLI FTP site, but no data. When is the data likely to be available?

Answer
We do not have the CCHS Healthy Aging 2008/09 PUMF yet. Our latest information does indicate that it should be released this month, so I have asked the author division for an update.
The Canadian Health Measures Survey is available in the RDCs. At the request of some members at a presentation at the DLI training in Toronto last year, the Division provided the DLI with documentation for users interested in finding out what information is gathered from that survey. There are not enough data at this point to create a PUMF from that survey. It will take at least another year before deciding if they can create a PUMF or not. In the meantime, the Division has offered to do some free custom tabulations from that survey. If you are interested in following-up on this, we will put you in contact with a client service representative from the Division.
I hope this is clear. I will get back to you with more information about the CCHS 2008/09 PUMF release date as soon as I hear back from the division.

As a follow-up to my initial response below, the author division just confirmed that they now expect to release the CCHS 2008/09 PUMF in February 2011. They have offered to provide us with the exact date as soon as it is determined so we will keep you posted.

Kidney Diseases
I received the following question off-list and am sharing it as it may be of interest to others.

"I have an upper undergrad looking for statistics on kidney diseases and/or hemodialysis on the provincial level. Have searched CANSIM and found Table 102-0563 Leading Causes of Death (prov), Table 102-0534 Diseases of the Genitourinary System (at Canada level), as well as tables for primary sites of cancer, including kidney. (CIHI has some info). Is there somewhere else I should look?"

You can locate a few more CANSIM tables that have statistics on kidney related cancer/diseases or deaths by running a search for "kidney" in CANSIM (use the search box in the middle of the screen): http://cansim2.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-win/CNSMCGI.pgm?LANG=Eng&Dir-Rep=CII/&CNSM-Fi=CII/CII_1-eng.htm .
Some of our older National Population Health Survey (NPHS) public use microdata files seem to have a province of residence variable and variables dealing with kidney disease or cancer. You student may want to have a look at these if he/she wishes to work with microdata. For example:
