New files on Statistics Canada Nesstar: School Leavers Survey

Anyone can view the metadata for these files on the Statistics Canada Nesstar site.  Only DLI Contacts however will be able to access the data files on the site. If you are a DLI Contact and would like to access and manipulate data files on the Statistics Canada Nesstar site, please send an email to dli-idd@statcan.gc.ca to request a password. Please note that the DLI data files available through Nesstar are subject to the DLI license agreement.

Statistics Canada to make all online data free

Sources of gender-desegregated data

Question

This is something I have not been previously asked about and now I have agreed to speak to a class about gender-desgregated data sources.  There are some good web pages at Health Canada and DSP and a few others but I am wondering if I am overlooking something in DLI? Any suggestions about sources of gender-desgregated data would be greatly appreciately.

Answer

Most of the data in the DLI collection can be disaggregated by sex. Even the household level surveys have some capacity for this. However, the GSS (General Social Survey) series did come to mind, as it covers a wide range of topics for which gender-based analysis might be appropriate (i.e. victimization and social networks).

MARC records for DLI products

Question

Where can I get MARC records for all the DLI products?  From this message on the STC website, I’m guessing they exist: “If you are a member of the Depository Services Program (DSP) or the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) you can download the MARC record(s) for this Statistics Canada product directly into your cataloguing database.”

Answer

On the search page for the Statistics Canada library catalogue, the right hand side bar has  information on downloading Marc records in the Z39.50 format.

Z39.50 protocol enables you to search and retrieve MARC records from the Statistics Canada Library database using software connected to the Internet. This service does not require registration, simply configure your ILS Z39.50 server with the following parameters:
Database: Unicorn
IP address: 142.206.64.146
Port number: 2200Once you have configured your ILS Z39.50 server, consult your ILS documentation for how to proceed with downloading library catalogue MARC records.

Quebec Universities' Financial Information

Question:

I have a student who is looking for statistical information about equipment purchases made by Quebec universities for the following years: 1980, 1982, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2005 et 2007. 

Answer:

The best place to look would be the Financial Information of Universities and Colleges Survey (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=3121&lang=fr&db=imdb&adm=8&dis=2). The Financial Information of Universities and Colleges Survey was developed to provide financial information (income and expenditures) on all universities and degree-granting colleges in Canada. Clicking on 'other reference periods' (located in the left-side menu bar), will allow you to explore other time periods.

Office of Energy Efficiency: Comprehensive Energy Use Database

The Comprehensive Energy Use Database provides an overview of sectoral energy markets in Canada and in each region of the country. These tables are intended to complement data published in the upcoming edition of the Energy Use Data Handbook, 1990 to 2008.
