Parole Eligibility and Granting

Question

I am attempting to find the average time span between parole eligibility and granting of parole (or statutory release as the case may be) for second degree murder cases as well as this same average as it pertains to Aboriginal persons. If this varies over the years I would appreciate the data for the last 10 if possible.

Answer

Unfortunately, we do not have any information related to the request. Perhaps Correctional Service of Canada would have more information. They even report on Aboriginal Corrections.

Graduation Rates in Canadian Universities

Question

Is there a source of university completion/graduation rates “by” universities in Canada over the past 15 years approximately?

What I could find was:
http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/81-582-x/2007001/tbl/2007001/tbld2.4-eng.htm
- this includes university graduation rates by provinces (not by universities) in Canada, 1991 up to 2005 only (Table D.2.4 Graduation rates, by program level and jurisdiction of study, Canada and jurisdictions, 1991 to 2005, produced, June 2008)

Both AUCC and CAUT don’t seem to have this. Where can I find more information on these rates?

Answer

In fact that was the last installment of that particular table as the methodologies used to calculate “Graduation rate” is being revisited. So for now the table is no longer being updated. Sorry we do not have a timeline as to when it will reappear at this point.

Use of PCCF

Question

I have a RDC researcher who would like to use a PCCF file to link data spatially, if allowable, from the National Longitudinal Study of Children and Youth (NLSCY) with census data in order to obtain a variable for neighbourhood income. If allowable, would the request be at the RDC level of the researcher or the Analyst (who would be authorized to handle the file)?

Answer

Is the question about permission and availability or is it about feasibility? For feasibility, the entire proposal will have to be reviewed by subject matter following the usual process, to answer this question correctly.I would advise contacting the RDC Analyst for more information.

Aboriginal Youth Suicide

Question

I'm looking for recent data on aboriginal youth suicide rates particularly for Saskatchewan. I can find a lot of material around the topic and some pretty old statistics, but would like to find more information.

Answer

The Canadian Vital Statistics Death Database collects demographic and cause of death information annually from all provincial and territorial vital statistics registries on all deaths in Canada. I have contacted the Health Statistics Division to confirm if this information would be available as a custom tab.

Premature mortality in health regions with high Aboriginal populations:
This article examines the rate of potential years of life lost--a measure used to quantify premature mortality in differing health regions. The rate was considerably higher in health regions with large proportions of Aboriginal residents, compared with other health regions. Much of this difference was attributed to injuries in the high-Aboriginal regions; notably, suicides and motor vehicle accidents.

Remote Access to the NLSCY

Question

Is remote access available for the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY)? I assume that the agreement for remote access would cover the conditions for the participation of Researchers outside of Canada?

Answer

The Author Division has confirmed that there are three ways to access data for NLSCY :

1) through the Research Data Centres (information about RDC is found at <http://www.stat can.gc.ca/rdc-cdr/index-eng.htm>)

2) by requesting a custom tabulation at a rate of $70.26 per hour, or

3) using remote data access (you write the program, we run it against the master file and send you the table). You just need to email us.

Custom tabulations and remote data access are done on a cost recovery basis. The cost of a custom tabulation is based on the amount of time to run the table. Remote data access charge is $80 for 20 tables or less.

Job-related Outcomes

Question

I have a graduate student looking for information on job-related outcomes - including things such as job satisfaction, job engagement, and job performance for Canada with no time period specifications. Any suggestions?

Data from the 2002 Canadian Community Health Survey, which focused on mental health and well-being, show that just over 6% of workers were "not too satisfied," and 2% were "not at all satisfied."
