Absence of Visible Minority Variable in SLID

Question

A researcher here would like to know if the visible minority variable, available in the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) master file, could be made available in the PUMF. If the main issue is sample size, could it at least be available at the national level?

Answer

The division that produces this PUMF indicated that the disclosure risk of including a visible minority variable on the PUMF was deemed high and that it therefore isn't available in this PUMF. They recommended that the researcher consider using the Research Data Centres (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/rdc-cdr/index-eng.htm) if he/she wishes to work with a SLID visible minority variable.

Courts Personnel and Expenditures Survey

Question

I have a student looking for more recent information from the 2000-2001 court personnel and expenditures survey. Specifically, she is looking for:

I am really interested in only the court costs - how much does it cost to run a court house? What are some of the operational expenses included in this? what are the salaries of court personnel, judges, lawyers, etc.

If there is a more recent source for this information, please let me know.

The StatCan survey that collected the 2000/2001 data you located no longer appears to be active (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cgi-bin/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=3310&lang=en&db=imdb&adm=8&dis=2); the last reference period for this survey was 2002/2003 (see the following Daily release for data for these years: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/041123/dq041123e-eng.htm).

I have asked our justice contacts if they can recommend a more recent source for similar data and will share their recommendations with you as soon as I receive their response.

Income data by occupation are available from the census (for example: http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/dp-pd/tbt/St-eng.cfm?LANG=E&Temporal=2006&APATH=3&THEME=81&FREE=0&GRP=1). These census data may be of interest to the student as well.

Additional Information

The author division confirmed that the last time data was collected and published for the Courts Resources, Expenditures and Personnel Survey was 2002/2003. They indicated that in the future justice expenditures data will come from the data collected by the the division that disseminates our public sector statistics. The publication of justice expenditures data from this source is however still several years away.

You may wish to see if other organisations (Justice Canada or the jurisdictions/organisations that generate some of these data) publish any of the figures the student needs.

Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (PALS) Question

Good afternoon everyone!

I have another PALS question. We're looking at the PUMF file for 2006 and if I select ONLY those individuals with a disability (DISAB = 1) and those individuals whose income source is social assistance (AHUI_Q32F = 1).. then look at hours worked (HOURSP) - I'm left with 2130 respondents where the hours worked is Not Applicable, age <15 yrs, institutional residents.

Does this make sense? I have a graduate student who is looking at this particular question and would like to access the Master file - but is very concerned about this result. Would it be possible to check with the Authoring division to see whether this truly is the case? Is there any way to see whether there are any individuals with HOURSP that have a disability and have social assistance? This will help us determine whether the graduate student should pursue this line of inquiry or not.

Answer

A methodologist in the author division provided the following response to your question about the PALS 2006 PUMF:

"If you are working with the disabled population (DISAB=1), then you don't want to look at the variable HOURSP on the PUMF. Instead, you want to use the equivalent variable AEDE_Q01. The reason is that HOURSP is derived from the question on hours worked that was asked on Census. The same question was asked again on PALS to those who had a limitation (variable AEDE_Q01) and who had previously said they worked (ALFS_Q01=1). Since PALS came AFTER census, it was preferable to use this variable when possible (i.e. when DISAB=1) because it is more recent. This is why we put HOURSP=NA, age<15, institution residents, for everyone with a disability (because for this population, a more up to date variable exists).

Recap: If DISAB=1 and you want to look at the hours worked, you use AEDE_Q01. If DISAB=0, then you use HOURSP."
