University and College Academic Staff System (UCASS)

Question:
Does the UCASS statistics fall under the category of the Open Data Licence? It is't a PUMF. An alumna would like the data.

Answer:
UCASS data does fall under Statistics Canada’s Open Licence.  Only Statistics Canada’s postal products do not fall under the Open Licence.

Teachers in Universities

Question

I have a faculty member looking for the Teachers in Universities data series. He wants 2007-08 to the last year it's available. I'm not familiar with this survey, is it available in the DLI? If not is there another way he can get what he needs?

Answer

We have the University and College Academic Staff System (UCASS), you can find all information regarding this survey at the following link :

http://www23.statcan.gc.ca/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=3101

The last year of data available are for 2010-2011. The tables will be added to the DLI for future requests.

UCASS Questions

Question

Good morning all!

Alrighty here's a good one - one that I'm hoping someone can help me understand or maybe we can obtain some clarification from the Education folks :)

UCASS - is a population study - so essentially a Census - gathers information from all Universities and Colleges in Canada. So far so good. Now my researcher has asked the Division to obtain a mean and a standard error for a number of continuous or scale variables. (Aside: yes she's paying for each round of calculations and custom tabulations.)

The response they gave her yesterday was they cannot calculate a standard error for any values since it's a population study. Hmmm... ok if I think about this - yes it's a census so in essence this is the only population of this sort available and working on this notion maybe my researcher should have asked for a standard deviation. However... this information was not suggested and my researcher was also told that because this is a population study they are unable to provide her with any variation measures. This is where I get confused.

Can anyone help me understand this? Why is it NOT possible to obtain any variation measures from UCASS?

Answer

I did get some clarification from Education Division on this, and it seems to support what Susan explains below:

"We cannot provide any measures of variance (i.e. standard errors or coefficients of variation) because UCASS is a census of its targeted population. Measures of variance measure how much an estimate calculated from a sample may be different from an estimate calculated from the target population. However, since estimates coming from UCASS are calculated from the population, there is no need to figure out how much it differs from the population since it *is* the population."

I hope that helps.

Academic Teaching Staff

Question

I have a researcher who is looking for new faculty appointments in Canada - Full-Time Canadian University Teachers Appointed in current year for 2000-2001 to most recent by Field of Study and Gender.   The UCASS files tell us how many faculty there are - but not how many were newly appointed that year.  Is this available or is this a custom tab?

Answer

Our Education consultant confirmed that this would be a custom request. She estimates that the cost would be about $350, but can provide you with a final cost once she knows the complete list of variables needed.

Please let me know if you are interested in pursuing this custom tabulation.

UCASS October 8 2008 Release

Question

I’d like to give an update or expected delivery date for this data that was requested back in October by a professor here. Is there any way we can find out when it is expected?

Answer

I just received word from our Education consultant that the updated UCASS data is expected to be available towards the end of March 2009.

Post-secondary enrollments and faculty members

Question
I am trying to determine if we have access through the DLI to university enrollments (by institution) and faculty numbers (by institution). We do have access to the Financial Information of Universities and Colleges (FIUC) by institution.

The Enhanced Student Information System (ESIS) should be the source for the enrolment data by institution but I don't see any access to that. The University and College Academic Staff Survey (UCASS) should be the source for the faculty data by institution; we do have access to UCASS through DLI but I could only find the data at the provincial level and not by institution.

I am surprised that we can get financial information at the institution level but apparently not enrolment and faculty numbers. Is this data only available through custom tabulations? Any assistance with this would be very much appreciated.

Answer

1) Check out http://www.caut.ca/pages.asp?page=442. Specifically Section 2, Table 2.12 and Section 4, Tables 4.4 and 4.5. There may be other tables of interest.

2) That suggestion is a good one because institution-level data for university enrolments and faculty numbers are not available through the DLI. They can, however, be ordered for a fee. A similar question came up in the summer so I have provided a link to the complete answer which will give you some idea of what you could expect to pay:

UCASS and SED

Question
I have a researcher who is VERY interested in obtaining some custom tabulations from both the UCASS and Survey of Earned Doctorates. How would they go about doing this?

Also - is there any historical data available through DLI for the SED?

Answer
For custom tabulations, I can have an account executive contact you or your
researchers directly. Would you like me to arrange that?

As for the SED, there is data for 2003/4 and 2004/5 available under the
"Education" folder on the DLI FTP site and website. However, according to
the Daily there was a release of 2002/3 data as well. I will ask our
Education consultant whether they can provide us with that data and keep you
posted.

More Detailed University and College Academic Staff System (UCASS) Data

Question

An administrator here is looking for some data from UCASS that is more detailed than what she's already been able to obtain. Specifically, she's looking a version of the following table:
Table 2
Number of Full-Time University Teachers by Region, Field,
Highest Earned Degree, Staff Functions, Rank, Sex and
Median Age, 2004-2005

disaggregated by university. The statement about disclosure control in the IMDB suggests that it is at least possible (with the consent in writing of each institution involved) -- or am I reading this wrong? If this is possible, what should she do to get the ball rolling?

Answer

The Centre for Education Statistics can produce this table for you with a breakdown by institution on a custom basis. There would be a cost of $300 for the table and they would require 5-10 working days for processing once the order is placed.

University and College Academic Staff System (UCASS)

Question

A researcher is looking at the demographic profile of teaching professionals and I came across University and College Academic Staff System (UCASS) with release date "August 2, 2007 (preliminary)". On the statcan page, it does not really tell from where this data is available - dli or custom made tabulations for fee or if its just released. What are the plans on availability?

Answer

The Culture, Tourism and the Centre for Education Statistics Division has provided the DLI with a some education standard tables, some of which appear to be from UCASS (University and College Academic Staff System). The most recent data we currently have in these tables are for 2004-2005. I have contacted the author division to see if more recent versions of these tables or a PUMF are available.

Education Tables

The DLI has been provided with a few standard tables from Culture, Tourism and the Centre for Education Statistics Division that they usually sell at a fee but are not listed in the on-line catalogue. These are deemed to be semi-custom tables.

The data stem from a variety of surveys including:

- Financial Information of Universities and Colleges Survey (FIUC)
- Elementary-Secondary Education Statistics Project (ESESP)
- Tuition and Living Accommodation Costs for Full-time Students at Canadian Degree-granting Institutions
- University and College Academic Staff System (UCASS)

University and College Academic Staff System - Part-time Staff

Question

I have a researcher looking for the University and College Academic Staff System - Part-time Staff (PTUCASS) data. Can this be made available through DLI?

Answer

As it turns out, the survey no longer collects part-time information -- all we have is full-time info! This is a recent change. We stopped collecting data on part-time faculty staff since it was not well reported and there was not much demand for such data. Eventually the title will change to reflect the difference.
