I have a researcher interested in annual GDP growth rates by industry, both provincially and nationally, from 1998-2006. The researcher is quite insistent on getting StatCan figures, if at all possible, rather than replicating the calculations herself.
Is StatCan able to provide these figures?
Answer
Will CanSim tables 379-0017 to 379-0031 (GDP at Base Prices by NAICS code) not do what you need?
If you have the figures for each year, you should be able to calculate growth rates.
In response to a similar question I had a while back, I was able to use some of the spreadsheets I can forward you to illustrate calculating year over year change in GDP,
based on annual CANSIM figures.
The Industry Accounts division confirmed the following:
"Statistics Canada does not publish annual growth rates for GDP by industry. With that said, the growth rates can easily be calculated from the data available on CANSIM.
• In constant dollars, for the national level, for the period 1998 to 2006, the client should derive his growth rates from the data found in CANSIM Table 379-0031.
• In constant dollars, for the provincial level, for the period 1998 to 2006, the client should derive his growth rates from data found in CANSIM Table 379-030.
• In current dollars, for both the national and provincial levels, for the period 1998 to 2006, the client should derive his growth rates from the data found in CANSIM Table 381-0015."
