2016 Census microdata

Question
Given the current schedule, what is the best estimate of when one would either be able to order a custom tab from the 2016 Census of Individuals, or get access to the master file via the RDC?

Answer
Here is the link to the 2016 Census Project release schedule: http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2016/ref/release-dates-diffusion-eng.cfm

Subject matter has confirmed that custom tabulations will be available after these release dates. The first data release is scheduled for February 8, 2017, and will be population and dwelling counts.

In regards to your question on accessing the masterfile via the RDC, various factor such as the size of data files, urgency of the data, documentation and vetting rules availability affect the turnaround time for Masterfiles. The average time could be between 2 days to 2 weeks for a survey that has all factors mentioned.

Longitudinal Worker File

Question

I have a PhD student who is looking for the Longitudinal Worker File (LWF) microdata and wants to know what years might be available. From what I can find, the LWF is only available through StatCan as a paid custom product: http://www5.statcan.gc.ca/bsolc/olc-cel/olc-cel?catno=75C0013&lang=eng

Answer
It is available through the Canadian Centre for Data Development and Economic Research (CDER) http://www.statcan.gc.ca/cder-cdre/index-eng.htm

To access: CDER is located within Statistics Canada's Ottawa facilities on the 18th Floor of the R.H. Coats Building. Access to Statistics Canada's holdings of business microdata is available only at this facility. A prospective researcher submits a project proposal to CDER following the process outlined in the CDER application process and guidelines. Only research-oriented projects can be undertaken at CDER. Individuals should contact the appropriate subject matter divisions at Statistics Canada to obtain custom tabulations. Applications are accepted year round. The approval of the projects will be based on peer reviews and on whether the project falls within the mandate of Statistics Canada. Alternative access would be a custom tab.

National Survey of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations

Question

A professor has asked about a raw data file for the National Survey of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations (2003).

This survey is not listed as being in the DLI collection. I mentioned that the surveys for which pumfs end up in the DLI collection tend to be household surveys and not surveys of institutions or businesses. I would appreciate a definitive answer to his request though.

Answer

A public use microdata file (PUMF) could not be produced for the National Survey of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations (2003) due to confidentiality related requirements. The DLI will therefore not be receiving a microdata file for this survey.

The following publication is based on this survey and may be of interest to the professor:

Cornerstones of Community: Highlights from the National Survey of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations (61-533-XWE)

"This publication provides the first national portrait of the many thousands of nonprofit and voluntary organizations found in every Canadian community. The data, from the National Survey of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations, reveal a set of organizations that are widely diverse in nature, touching virtually every aspect of Canadians' lives."
