Census of Population, 2016 Hierarchical File
Statistics Canada conducts the Census of Population in order to develop a statistical portrait of Canada and Canadians on one specific day. The census is designed to provide information about people and housing units in Canada by their demographic, social and economic characteristics.
Statistics Canada reinstated the mandatory long-form census in time for the 2016 Census of Population. As such, a sample of approximately 25% of Canadian households received a long-form questionnaire. All other households received a short-form questionnaire.
The Census of Population is a reliable basis for the estimation of the population of the provinces, territories and municipal areas. The information collected is related to federal and provincial legislative measures and provides a basis for the distribution of federal transfer payments. The census also provides information about the characteristics of the population and its housing within small geographic areas and for small population groups to support planning, administration, policy development and evaluation activities of governments at all levels, as well as data users in the private sector.
Clients: Federal government, provincial and territorial governments, municipal governments; libraries; educational institutions; researchers and academics; private industry; business associations labour organisations; ethnic and cultural groups; private citizens; public interest groups are among the users of census data.

Census Tract Pairs (Journey to Work)
Question:
I have a researcher looking for a dataset that would contain a list of pairs of Census tracts where one CT represents a person’s home location and the other their work location, along with the number of people who make that specific commute (based on the Census Journey to Work questions). Is this data available, perhaps as a custom tabulation?
Answer:
We’ve received the following response from the regional office:
“Yes it is possible. It would be CT of residence by CT of work within a CMA or CA.
He is looking for specifics CMAs/CAs and for other variables?”

Canadian Community Health Survey PUMF 2017-2018
Question:
Given that the CCHS PUMF for 2015/2016 was only released earlier this year, the researcher realizes that the PUMF for 2017-2018 is probably not in the very near future, but would like to know if there is any estimated timeframe for its release.
Answer:
We do not have an official release date for the CCHS 2017-2018 PUMF. Last I had spoken to subject matter, they were in the collection stage and didn’t expect to have anything released for another 1-2 years.
We will be updating our list of expected releases on the website shortly!

Correction SPSD/M 27.1
This e-mail is to inform you a miscoding was found in SPSD/M version 27.1 and to provide you with the appropriate solutions. Despite an extensive testing and validation system, an error was found in version 27.1 which may impact results of your studies.
This e-mail contains the solution that you need to resolve the miscoding. You may also download version 27.1.1 from the EFT if you would like a version of the model which has the fixes included. Version 27.1.1 will overwrite version 27.1.
Ontario Childcare Access and Relief from Expenses (CARE) Tax Credit
Years affected: 2019-2025
Issue: The Ontario CARE refundable tax credit announced in 2019 budget (April 11). Child Care Expenses and Social benefit repayments were deducted from net income when they should have been added back to net income.
Fix for users who don’t want to download 27.1.1: Ontario CARE is a refundable tax credit and therefore has no further income tax related implications in the model. Users can model this refundable tax credit easily using the User Variable Facility included with the model.

From our end here at Stats, unfortunately we weren’t able to come up with anything beyond a regular google search. There are no surveys that collect this information.

I have a researcher interested in a custom tab of data on Suicidal Thoughts & Attempts in SK from the 2015-16 CCHS. They’re hoping for two tabulations based on the following:
Meadow Lake and Surrounding Area
Meadow Lake (city)
Loon Lake (village)
Makwa (village)
Goodsoil (village)
Dorintosh (village)
Rapid View (village)
Green Lake (northern village)
La Ronge and Surrounding Area
La Ronge (northern town)
Air Ronge (northern village)
Would a custom tab of data at the level of the two broad areas (not the individual communities) be possible?
Answer:
Unfortunately the number of respondents in the two requested geography groupings are too small to provide any estimates.
Follow-Up Answer:
Have you tried the Saskatchewan Coroners Service Northern Regional Office?
It could be worthwhile. About four years ago I was able to obtain youth suicide numbers for some Ontario Indigenous communities by going to my regional supervising coroner office who then referred me to the right contact at the central office. I am pretty sure I started out with a phone call to my regional office. The contact I was referred to at the chief coroner’s office ran a special table for our researcher.
