Survey of Household Spending 2012

Question

I thought that the last information we had about the SHS was that there was going to be a gap, but that there would be a 2012 PUMF – am I misremembering, or remembering a different file?

Answer

The SHS Team confirmed:

"Due to resource requirements, Income Statistics Division is not currently planning to produce a Public-use Microdata File of the 2012 SHS. The 2012 SHS confidential microdata file will be available to authorized researchers through the Research Data Centres later in the year. The decision to produce a PUMF is made on a year-to-year basis..”

"Gross Farm Receipts" in the Census of Agriculture 1981 & 1986

Question

I have a researcher who is doing a long term economic analysis of farming. His is looking at “Gross Farm Receipts”. These are available in Census of Agriculture excel tables, by Census Division from the 1991 census onward. He would like Gross Farm Receipts at the division and subdivision level for 1981 and 1986. They do not appear on the excel tables for these years. But he has a report published in the 1980’s which lists aggregate Gross Farm Receipts for these years. I wish to confirm if the “gross farm receipts” variable was collected at the Census division level for 1981 and 1986. If so, where might we find it. If it is was not collected, where might we find a definition for how gross farm receipts were calculated, so he might be able to calculate it from variables which were collected in 1981, and 1986.

Answer

Total Gross Farm Receipts” were collected for 1981 and 1986 and were labelled “Total Value of Agricultural Products Sold” on the flat files available to the DLI community (files: CANADA818.xls last column in the agric1981xls.zip and CAN868.xls in the agric1986xls.zip).

These data are available at the Census Division (CD) and Census Consolidated Subdivision (CCS) levels:

Question

In light of: "migrating the DLI collection to be accessible by data platforms," will there be any redirection from the product pages to their new locations?

Answer

A redirect is possible of course, however, redirects are only in place for 2 years maximum.

EAPA/APS PUMF Release

Question

An instructor has asked if the EAPA/APS pumf will be available this fall as planned, and if so is there an estimate for its release date?

He would like to use the Aboriginal Peoples Survey if possible, in his advanced research methods classes this semester.

Answer

Our anticipated release date is January 2015. This date may have to be moved due to a lack of methodology resources but that decision has not been taken yet.

Survey of Household Spending 2012

Question

I have a researcher interested in accessing post 2009 SHS data. Statistics Canada announced the release of data through to 2012 in January of this year: <http://www23.statcan.gc.ca/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=3508>
Is this currently available via the DLI and if not, when we can see expect it?

Answer
The Author Division confirmed that: “Data from the Survey of Household Spending is available on CANSIM (tables 203-0021 to 203-0028, 203-0030 and 203-0031). The latest data available on CANSIM is 2012. There are no Public Use Microdata Files (PUMFs) produced from the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Survey of Household Spending. Usually the PUMFs were provided to DLI. The internal data files from the 2010 and 2011 Survey of Household Spending are available in the Research Data Centres (RDCs)."
