IALSS Variables

Question

In IALSS, there are variables PLEV1, PLEV2, PLEV3, PLEV4, PLEV5. I understand the literacy scale used for these variables - as explained in 4.1 of the user guide - but what I can't seem to dig out is what exactly these 5 different variables are - different questions/problems? Why are there 5?

Answer

The various questions show the level of success that they had on the questions of that difficulty level - the questionnaire asked questions of five different levels of difficulty. In the data file, if they have a 5 in PLEV1, they scored between 376 and 500 (highest) on the questions of difficulty level 1, while a 3 in PLEV4 would mean that the scored between 301 and 350 on questions of difficulty level 4.

IDLS shows the range of scores for the various questions (and not just level 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, as in in the codebook).

International Adult Literacy Skills Survey (Canada)

This product, offered on CD-ROM, contains the Canadian public microdata for the International Adult Literacy and Skills Survey (IALSS). IALSS is the Canadian component of the Adult Literacy and Skills Survey (ALL).

The Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey (ALL) is a large-scale co-operative effort undertaken in 2003 by governments, national statistics agencies, research institutions and multi-lateral agencies. The ALL study builds on the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS), the world's first internationally comparative survey of adult skills undertaken in three rounds of data collection between 1994 and 1998.

The foundation skills measured in the ALL survey include prose literacy, document literacy, numeracy, and problem solving. Additional skills assessed indirectly include familiarity with and use of information and communication technologies.

Industry Classification Coding System (ICCS)

The Industry Classification Coding System (ICCS) Version 1.3 is a tool to help users code records, at the lowest level of detail, to NAICS Canada, the 1980 SIC-E and other select classifications. Codes supplied for other Industrial Classifications supported by the ICCS, such as the NAICS United States and ISIC Rev 3.1, reflect Statistics Canada's interpretation of these classifications. The Industry Classification Coding System allows a user to enter a description of a business' major activity and get a list of 1980 SIC-E and NAICS Canada codes which match this description. The class definition is provided for each code in this list of potential matches. Using this information, the user can then select the best code to apply to the record's description. The ICCS also allows a coder to enter an industry classification code (1980 SIC-E or NAICS Canada) and get a list of all the ICCS business activity descriptions associated with that code, as well as its class definition and concordance to other classifications in the ICCS.

International Adult Literacy and Skills Survey (IALSS)- 2003

The 2003 International Adult Literacy and Skills Survey (IALSS) is the Canadian component of the Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey (ALL). The main purpose of the survey was to find out how well adults used printed information to function in society. Survey data include background information (demographic, education, language, labour force, training, literacy uses, information and communication technology, income) and psychometric results of respondents' proficiency along four skill domains: prose and document literacy, numeracy and problem-solving.

Follow up

This survey has two components:
1) International component: Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey (ALL)
2) Canadian component: International Adult Literacy Survey (IALSS)

The data accessible in the DLI collection are from the international component, therefore will be accessible under ALL.

Once the data for the Canadian component become available, it will be accessible under IALSS.

In order to facilitate access, the two surveys on the FTP and web sites will be cross-referenced.
