Information About Second-Generation Canadians

Question

A researcher is trying to find information on the amount of first-generation Canadians and their composition percentage of Canadian population as first generation immigrants. If possible, she would also like to see if we can find a percentage for Alberta and Edmonton (i.e. percentage of people in Alberta who are 1st generation Canadian and percentage of people in Edmonton who are first generation Canadian).

In the 2006 Canadian census, she found there were 24% of Canada's population is 15+ years of age.

Are there any resources or any places that would be able to shed some light on this question?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

The following 2006 Census topic based tabulation may be of interest to the researcher. The first can provide statistics on generation status for Canada and the provinces and the second one includes statistics for Edmonton.

Emigration/return of foreign born professionals

Question

A student is doing a research on the topic of emigration or return migration of foreign-born professionals in Canada, 1990 to 2003 for her graduate research methods course. Is there an appropriate data set to address this topic?

Answer

This data doesn't appear to be available in a DLI product.

Our Demography Division has data on emigration and returning emigrants but not data on emigration or return emigration of foreign born professionals in particular.

Some of the data your graduate student was hoping for might be available as a fee based custom request from the longitudinal administrative data (LAD) file.

Here is what the author division told me about the data that might be available as a fee based custom request:

"Our longitudinal administrative data (LAD) contain variables from the Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB). A couple of variables (from IMDB) relate to field of work: Immigrant's Intended Occupation and Immigrant's Industry Codes. On the LAD, we also have NAICS coding to identify primary and secondary industry of employment. This industry information is captured for all individuals for whom we have a T4 record.

By linking to the IMDB, we identify immigrants who arrived to Canada starting in 1980 (landing year). This allows a researcher to then study the incomes and family characteristics of this group of individuals through the years, up to 2005. With the LAD, I believe we can also identify return migrants, although we could not always distinguish foreign-born from Canadian-born unless that individual was already identified as an immigrant through IMDB.

which contains a complete glossary of LAD variables, is always a good starting point. I suggest your client consult the dictionary and examine the different variables that can be used. Annual Data on Immigration to CMAs

Question

A patron would like to find the 20 year data on foreign immigration to cities (CMAs) by year. That is the total foreign immigration to each major city, each year. They believe they have seen this data on a cd-rom before.

Answer

There is a cd-rom that comes with "Annual Demographic Statistics", 91-213, which contains additional data. It has statistics on immigration to CMAs from 1986 to current.

Foreign Students Entering or Residing in Canada

Question

I am looking for the numbers of international students entering and/or residing in Canada by year and country of citizenship. CIC has these numbers, but the ones I have been able to find are either aggregated or include only the top ten source countries.

Answer

Education can provide international students enrollments by institution and province, ft/pt, etc.
They don't have the data published so you have to contact them directly for it.
