Rural or Urban DAs

Question:
I've got a researcher trying to classify low-level Census units (DAs or DBs) by rural or urban status. I fear I'm missing something obvious in trying to help him.

Are all POPCTRs and RAs delineated along DA boundaries? I can't find any indication of this in the documentation but, when I visualize DA and POPCTR boundaries in GIS software, this appears to be the case. However, I've only eyeballed a few areas and haven't done an exhaustive analysis.

If the rural/urban split does follow DA boundaries, is there a convenient way to classify the DAs without resorting to GIS? I haven't been able to figure this out the DA Profile data tables. I also note that the GAF classifies DBs as being urban or rural.

Answer:
I recently encountered this as well. I found that a number of DAs have both urban and rural parts so it is not possible to classify all DA’s as urban or rural. I had to use GIS to do this. DBs on the other hand, as you found, can be classed as urban or rural.

Number of Employees


Question:
I have a student who is interested in # of employees (full time, part time or self-employed) for: City of North Vancouver, District of North Vancouver, District of West Vancouver and the Arbutus/UBC corridor in the smallest possible geography. He's not interested in category of employee or employer characteristics--just the number of employees.

He would like the data in a format that could easily be exported in ArGIS or QGIS.

Answer:

The 2016 Census offers “Number of employment income recipients”, that is the total number of people who received employment income during the year. It does not break them out by full, part-time, self employed. But using Vancouver CMA Census tracts seems like it might meet your requirement. You should be able to identify the Census Tracts you need for Arbutus and West.

Follow-Up Answer:

This is a custom table request that has to be assessed by the nearest regional office. I am not sure of this the Arbutus/UBC corridor as a geography or a format that exports to ArGIS or QGIS.

2016 Census geographic products

In preparation for the release of the 2016 Census results and coinciding with Geographic Information Systems Day, the first suite of geographic products released from the 2016 Census is available.
The products include maps and boundary files for the newly created aggregate dissemination areas, Boundary Files, Road Network File, Correspondence Files and the Interim List of Changes to Municipal Boundaries, Status, and Names.

All are accessible from the Census webpage and on the DLI FTP site: /MAD_DLI_IDD_DAM/root/geo/2016/

Boundary Files are based on standard geographic areas in effect on January 1, 2016, and provide geographic limits used for census dissemination and a framework for mapping and spatial analysis. Digital files depict the full extent of the geographic areas, including the coastal water area. Cartographic files depict the geographic areas using only the major land mass of Canada and its islands.

Digital and cartographic boundary files, in Lambert projection, are available for provinces and territories, aggregate dissemination areas, census divisions, economic regions, federal electoral districts (2013 Representation Order), census consolidated subdivisions, census subdivisions, census metropolitan areas/census agglomerations, census tracts, dissemination areas and dissemination blocks.

The Road Network File is a digital representation of Canada's national road network. Applications may include mapping, geocoding, geographic searching and area delineation. The file contains information such as street names, types, directions and address ranges. In addition, on each side of every street arc there are unique identifiers and names for the following levels of geography: province/territory, census metropolitan area/census agglomeration and census subdivision. Roads are ranked according to five levels of detail, suitable for mapping at various scales.

Correspondence Files (three in total) provide tabular data showing the correspondence between two vintages of geographic areas. Each correspondence file contains a unique identifier for the 2016 Census geographic area and the corresponding unique identifier for the 2011 Census geographic area. In addition, a relationship flag indicates the degree of correspondence between the geographic areas, facilitating a comparison between 2016 and 2011 census years.

The Interim List of Changes to Municipal Boundaries, Status and Names summarizes changes to municipal boundaries, status and names that occurred between January 2, 2011, and January 1, 2016. Municipal changes are based on information received through provincial and territorial gazettes, letters patent and orders-in-council.

Boundary Files are available in three formats: ArcGIS® Shapefile (.shp), Geography Markup Language (.gml) and MapInfo® (.tab). The 2016 Census Boundary Files (Catalogue number92-160-X, Catalogue number92-163-X, Catalogue number92-168-X, Catalogue number92-169-X, Catalogue number92-171-X), and Boundary Files, Reference Guide (Catalogue number92-160-G) are now available.

The Road Network File is available in three formats: ArcGIS® Shapefile (.shp), Geography Markup Language (.gml) and MapInfo® (.tab). The 2016 Census Road Network File (Catalogue number92-500-X), and Road Network File, Reference Guide (Catalogue number92-500-G) are now available.

The Aggregate Dissemination Area Reference Maps (Catalogue number92-640-X) are now available in HTML format. The Reference Maps and Thematic Maps, Reference Guide (Catalogue number92-143-G) is now available in HTML and PDF format.|

Correspondence Files are available in two formats: Comma Separated Variable (.csv) and text (.txt). The 2016 Census Correspondence Files (Catalogue number92-156-X), and Correspondence Files, Reference Guide (Catalogue number92-156-G) are now available.

The geography universe of the Census Dictionary (Catalogue number98-301-X) is now available in HTML format.|

The Interim List of Changes to Municipal Boundaries, Status and Names, 2011-2016 (Catalogue number92F0009X) is now available in HTML format.

Air Pollution Data

Question

I've got a student who's looking for 2006 air pollution data (PM10, carbon monoxide, etc.) at the health region level. Something tells me that kind of information probably isn't collected by health region. I've found a few sites that have region data available, the Ontario Air Quality Index and CASA Data (Alberta) for example, but nothing national.

Does anyone know of other possible sources?

Our contacts in our Environment Accounts and Statistics Division have provided the following suggestions in response to your question:

"Health Canada has done a lot of work linking ambient air quality data to different geographies. We have also been involved in the Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators (CESI) inititative for the national ambient air qualtiy indicators, but these are not specifically linked to health regions.

The approach I suggest is to use the National Air Pollution Surveillance (NAPS) data (available for download from the Environment Canada website). This can be combined via the Lat-Long coordinates for the sites with the health region geography in a geographical information systems (GIS) application. This would work for ambient air quality analysis.

If it is emissions that are the focus, then the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) is the main source of information. Since 2002, emissions of criteria air contaminants have been included in the NPRI. The inventory has emissions by facility, and the facilities are geo coded. This too could be coded to health regions with the appropriate GIS application. "

ArcGIS compatible data (preferably polygons) of municipal boundaries / urban landcover for Southern Vancouver Island

Question

A student is requesting the following data file:
"ArcGIS compatible data (preferably polygons) of municipal boundaries / urban landcover for Southern Vancouver Island".

Where can relevant data be found?

Answer

Check out the FTP site under the folder "geography," select 2001 and then spatial. There one can find all the mapinfo and arcinfo files for GIS.

The files are organised by level of geography - assess which best suits the student's needs. If additional levels of geography are required, but not found in the folder, they are likely not part of the DLI collection.
