I don't think I have overlooked anything obvious but you never know!
I have a faculty member who wants the number of degrees granted by field of study by province by gender for as recently as possible if not he can use Enrollment number by field of study by province by gender for as recently as possible.
CANSIM -477-0011 to 477-0014 does not have the field of study 81-229xib is only up to 2000 and does not have a detailed enough breakdown of field of study
On the CAUT website, in their Almanac, for 2003-2004 they have degrees by field of study by gender but only for the whole of Canada (Table 3.11) I need this by province!
CAUT gets its stats from the Centre for Education Statistics. Should I e-mail them or can DLI get them for us?? Alternatively how much would a custom tab be??

1) In CANSIM, the information is provided my field of study however the data is based on Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) now and the primary categories are available.
This is available in Table 477-0014 University degrees, diplomas and certificates granted, by program level, Classification of Instructional Programs, Primary Grouping (CIP_PG) and sex, annual (number)
2) If further detail is required on the CIP, it is available for 2, 4 and 6 digit level from 1992 to 2004 on a cost recovery basis only. The following link provides information on the classification system used. http://stds.statcan.ca/english/cip/cip_2digit.asp
To provide a custom table by CIP, by province, by gender for 1 year of data would be $165 with each additional year costing $15.
Caution must be used however if a historical comparison is being done as it cannot be done at the 4 or 6 digit level. As about 40% of the institutions still report using the old system, data cannot be used at this detailed level for historical analysis. If historical analysis is done, it must not be done lower than 2 digit level.
2 digit CIP is still more detailed than CANSIM. It contains the following groups:

Education/Occupation/Industry Data
Question
An MBA student is looking for two types of data:
1) Field of study as a student vs. occupation in labour force. I checked one of the National Graduates Surveys, and this data seems to be collected, but the occupation data is suppressed. Is there any way for this student to get these figures other than going to an RDC? If RDC is the only way to get this data, would Remote Data Access be a possibility?
2) Migration of workers from the paper industry (NAICS 3221). Something that shows workers in this field a year or two or five down the road and in what industry they are now working. (Kind of like the mobility data in the Census, except this would be for type of work (preferably by NAICS).

The Centre for Education Statistics has said that "There is no way of getting the occupation variable except through the RDCs and right at the moment we do not offer Remote Data Access due to shortage of staff."
After searching the collection for a survey that would provide mobility data (by NAICS) over time for workers in the paper industry (NAICS 3221), an appropriate source could not be located.

Universities: Enrollment & Degrees
Question
Is the following available through DLI? I can't find record of it anywhere on the StatCan site, and our Library Catalogue indicates the print publication ended in 1991.
Catalogue No. 81-204, Universities: Enrollment and Degrees -- Table 12: Enrolment by Level, Home Province of Canadians and Permanent Residents, Province of Study, Registration Status and Sex, for the most current two years.

I believe that the information you are looking for is not available via the DLI but from STC Centre for Education Statistics directly. In July I sent out the message below that I had received from them about their latest release on university enrolments. I have also included the link to the Daily that they mentioned in this news release. If the product they mention that is available to download does not meet your needs then you should contact the division directly.

Preliminary data on university enrolment for 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 were previously released in The Daily on March 31 and April 17, 2003. This release provides the final data for the same periods.
Data on Field of Study are coded according to the new Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP). Before the ESIS was implemented, the Postsecondary Education and Adult Learning Section of the Centre for Education Statistics (CES) used the University Student Information System (USIS) for fields of study at the university level. USIS-to-CIP and CIP-to-USIS conversion tables are available on request.
Data on education levels, citizenship and immigration status were coded using the new classifications in the Enhanced Student Information System (ESIS). Conversion tables are also available for these variables.
For the purposes of the release, a foreign student is defined as a non-Canadian student who does not have "permanent resident" status and has had to obtain the authorization of the Canadian government to enter Canada with the intention of pursuing an education.
Historical data on enrolments for 1992-1993 to 2001-2002 were converted using ESIS variable definitions and code sets, so as to maintain the historical continuity of the statistical series.
