Historical Census Data for Laxgalts'ap
Question
I am working with a researcher who needs historical census data going back 20 years (so essentially going back to and including the 1991 Census) for Laxgalts’ap (5949840).
2006 – According to the suppression lists at http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/ref/notes/sup_CSD2A-SDR2A-eng.cfm) and (http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2006/ref/notes/sup_CSD2B-SDR2B-eng.cfm), the data for Laxgalts’ap was suppressed. As there is data available for Laxgalts’ap in the 2001 Census, and the population in this community actually grew somewhat between 2001 and 2006, I am assuming this was not because of low population numbers but because of a problem with the data. However, it would be nice to be able to provide the researcher with a reason as to why the 2006 data is not available. I could not find this information in any documentation, but I do seem to remember hearing something about some problem in the 2006 Census that resulted in this kind of suppression…
1991 and 1996 – Laxgalts’ap was not a CSD before 2001. The area was included in the Kitimat-Stikine, Subd A CSD (5949037). As I don’t have EA maps for these censuses, I compared the 2006 DA boundary file with the 1996 and 1991 EA boundary files to try to determine the EAs that encompassed Laxgalts’ap in the earlier years. From what I can see, the relevant EAs for 1996 are 59025404 and 59025406 and the relevant EA for 1991 was 59025404. Is it possible to verify this for me please?

According to the Data Quality Notes for the 2006 Community Profile for Laxgalts’ap, data were suppressed for the following reasons:
• Data quality index showing, for the short census questionnaire (100% data), a global non response rate higher than or equal to 25% (suppressed).

Urban/Rural Indicator in GSS Cycle 18
Question
I have a Professor here, who is using the GSS Cycle 18 – Victimization (2004), in a course with second year students. The students are performing various cross-tabulations and one of the independent variables they are being asked to include is the “Urban/Rural Indicator” (urind). Curiously, apart from “Urban” and “Rural”, another response option is for “Prince Edward Island”.
I believe this has to do with the sample, but the Professor was looking for an explanation as to why the PEI respondents were not included in one of the Urban or Rural responses. I have searched through the User’s Guide and other documentation for a rationale for this, but wasn’t able to locate anything.
Would there be some other documentation or explanation that could help clear this up?

"Here are some details for the inquiry about the specific variable in the PUMF for Rural/Urban. There are no CMAs in PEI and CMA is what is used to determine the urban-rural indicators.
Previous GSS PUMFs have sometimes included a rural/urban indicator called URIND (1=Urban, 2=Rural, 3=PEI). This derived variable is based on the UA_RA_TYPE geocodes (e.g. Cycle14).
For cycle 17 onwards , instead of URIND, a new rural/urban indicator (LUC_RST) was included as follows: The new variable is based on GEO_SAC_TYPE. The categories "CMA, CA tracted, CA untracted" are grouped into a new category “Larger Urban Centres”, and "Strong MIZ, Moderate MIZ, Weak MIZ and No MIZ" are grouped into a new category called “Rural and Small Town”. PEI is kept as a separate category.

Number of Engineers & Geoscientists Working in Businesses with Less Than 5 Employees in Alberta

I am looking for the number of engineers and geoscientists working in businesses with less than 5 employees in Alberta (most recent number available). If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate the help.

This information unfortunately doesn't seem to be readily available in a recent StatCan standard aggregated data product.
Occupation related data for Alberta are available from surveys such as the Census for example but these wouldn't include information on business size. Other surveys and programs (Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours - SEPH for example) could provide employment information by industry (NAICS) and enterprise size but unfortunately wouldn't include occupation related variables.
Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) seems to have both occupation related variables and employer related variables (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/75f0026x/2010000/theme-eng.htm) but the smallest range for number of employees seems to be "less than 20" employees so I don't expect that this would meet your client's needs. I am also not sure that this survey would be appropriate to produce the estimates you need but would be happy to ask our SLID contacts to advise if you are interested in SLID. If you also wish to look into SLID, SLID public use microdata files are available through the DLI and analytical files through the RDCs. SLID data are also be available as a custom product on a cost recovery basis.
