Visible Minority Teachers

Question

I’m trying to help a student in the College of Education here locate stats on visible minority / immigrant teachers or educators in SK.

I’ve already contacted the Ministry of Education, the SK Teachers Federation, and the SK Professional Teachers Regulatory Board to no avail.

Are there any StatCan products that might contain this information?

I’ve located the following CANSIM tables pertaining to teachers and educators. 7 of them filter by province, but they do not account for minority or ethnicity: http://www5.statcan.gc.ca/cansim/a33?RT=TABLE&themeID=1831&spMode=tables&lang=eng

We have few CANSIM tables (477-0109, 477-0108, 477-0107) with the number of full-time or part-time public elementary and secondary educators by provinces (the client can go in Add/Remove data tab to select the province) but we do not have the immigration status variable in that survey.

We also have a CANSIM table 477-0017 with the number of full-time teaching staff at Canadian universities by rank, sex, Canada and Provinces (the client can go in Add/Remove data tab to select the province) up-to 2010-2011 but again we do not have the immigration status. 2010-11 is the last year we have although the UCASS survey is back and some data will be disseminate this year.

For this survey (UCASS: University and Colleges academic staff survey) you may be interested by the variable “Country of Citizenship at Time of Appointment.

Teachers' Salaries

Question

I have a grad student who’s looking for average salary information for primary and secondary school teachers.

I can find current information using the salary grids published by the various teachers’ federations / unions, but he’d like some historical information as well. Survey of Employment Payrolls and Hours (SEPH) contains employee and salary figures for elementary and secondary education but only at the 4-digit level, which means it could include teacher’s aides, etc.

CANSIM table 281-0026 provides average weekly earnings for the NAICS 6111 and by categories of employees: ‘salaried employees paid a fixed salary’ (teaching) and ‘employees paid by the hours’ (non-teaching). The teaching category should exclude substitutes, but respondents may include them. Unfortunately we have nothing below NAICS4.

Academic Teaching Staff

Question

I have a researcher who is looking for new faculty appointments in Canada - Full-Time Canadian University Teachers Appointed in current year for 2000-2001 to most recent by Field of Study and Gender.   The UCASS files tell us how many faculty there are - but not how many were newly appointed that year.  Is this available or is this a custom tab?

Answer

Our Education consultant confirmed that this would be a custom request. She estimates that the cost would be about $350, but can provide you with a final cost once she knows the complete list of variables needed.

Salary and salary scales of full-time teaching staff at Canadian universities

Question

The Daily announced that there was supplementary data available on December 10 for this product. I looked on the DLI FTP site and didn't see it. Do you know when we will be getting the supplementary data, if at all? I have a staff member looking for this.

The Dec. 10 release is for preliminary data from the University and College Academic Staff System (UCASS) survey. For this survey, the author division produces preliminary data (for institutions that completed the survey before December) and final data (which contains data for all institutions that have reported by March). The Division only provides the DLI with updated data once they have the final data in March. They do not provide us with the preliminary data.

If you wanted the preliminary data in particular, you would need to order it from the division. Please be aware that custom UCASS data starts at $250 and the price varies depending on what is needed.

Post-secondary enrollments and faculty members

Question

I am trying to determine if we have access through the DLI to university enrollments (by institution) and faculty numbers (by institution). We do have access to the Financial Information of Universities and Colleges (FIUC) by institution.

The Enhanced Student Information System (ESIS) should be the source for the enrolment data by institution but I don't see any access to that. The University and College Academic Staff Survey (UCASS) should be the source for the faculty data by institution; we do have access to UCASS through DLI but I could only find the data at the provincial level and not by institution.

I am surprised that we can get financial information at the institution level but apparently not enrolment and faculty numbers. Is this data only available through custom tabulations? Any assistance with this would be very much appreciated.

1) Check out http://www.caut.ca/pages.asp?page=442. Specifically Section 2, Table 2.12 and Section 4, Tables 4.4 and 4.5. There may be other tables of interest.

2) That suggestion is a good one because institution-level data for university enrolments and faculty numbers are not available through the DLI. They can, however, be ordered for a fee. African Professors in Canadian Universities

Question

A professor in sociology is presently conducting research on Africans scholars in Canadian universities. He is looking for recent and relevant data on African Professors in Canadian universities.

The Education Division has something called the "University and college academic staff system" which should have the information you need.

Gender Distribution of University Faculty

Part of the Data Reference Mystery Series:

A patron wants statistics on the gender distribution of university faculty in Canada.

What further information would you like from this patron?

Geography: Does she or he require provincial breakdowns as well as the figures for all of Canada?
